sad story, but damn, selling smokes? :fp:

My favorite time of year. I just imagine everything I hear is fireworks and no gunshots. It would not suprise me to see a record number of shootings this week. Temps are supposed to be in mid to upper 90's all week=more people on the street to cool off and more people up to trouble.

Sad news about the girl, but hopefully some good will come from it somehow? They caught the guy that shot her, and their is no parole, I think they are still looking for an accomplice.

Isn't 10:45 a little late for a 7 year old to be up, much less on the street "working"? I also get the impression from the tone and words spoken by the mother on the news, that she is more interested in revenge than she is overwhelmed with sorrow. I may be dead wrong with the impression she gave me, but this is how it sounded to me. Who was near them that was the intended target? Did the mother know this person, and do they have gang affiliations? She knew this was a dangerous area at a dangerous time of night. I'm not saying it's her fault, I'm just saying that as a parent you should never put your child in an unnecessary dangerous or potentially deadly situation. All of the blame is on the shooter, however a child of that age has no business on the street in that neighborhood at that time.

I'm a Milwaukee girl ... Chicago scares me.

Went to Floral Art School there in the late 70's, scared me then
went to see PJ in 09 still scared me.

I live in Atlanta, still Chicago scares me more. I think it is the heat that people can't take.
More frustration and aggression. Here it is hot and it's just lazy.
Aggression is seen in how people drive  good lord ... look out.

    Illegal guns are the problem.

50 years ago I couldn't be out at 10:30 at night and my suburb streets were safe.
I'm so sorry for this Mama, she will blame herself I'm sure.

Walk the Englewood neighborhood in Chicago at 2am Saturday and if you still say you're not scared, you either have no care for your well being, or your lieing.

I walk the city by myself all the time without fear, but in areas that I have less of a chance of running into trouble. I'm not afraid of the city, but I definitely would not put myself in a dangerous situation without good reason. I think maybe you are being naive, or just not considering all areas of the city?

its not about being cocky. its about not letting the fuckers allow you to be scared. its about knowing what to do and when to do it. i am cautious but i am aware. i am alert and i note my surroundings. i do not walk around with my head up my arse. i walk around as if belong. this is the way i was raised and this is the way i raise my children. Any city, but I was talking about Chicago.

Chances are when you were here, you were downtown or in tourist areas. This is not where the majority of the city inhabitants live or hang out. I wouldn't be scared to walk there either, but that is a small sample of what the city neighborhoods are really like. Those are the areas with the most police, and the lowest crime.

Detroit is a different beast. I could not believe a city like that exists in America. It is in 100% crisis mode with a city government that has seen years of corruption and in financially flat-lined. Entire blocks of high-rises sit in utter decay. I've seen bad neighborhoods before, but never a bad city.

There are a few good parts such as Greektown and near the stadiums. And there are still historic parts that bristle with pride. But overall, it's a dangerous place.

There is a reason they build Robocop in the future to walk those streets.

You were in Lincoln Park, one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city. Police are numerous there, because the only thing worse than a child being harmed is a college student from a wealthy background. 99% of residents in Chicago can't afford to live here. That number is probably closer to 100% than it is 99.

A nice neighborhood to visit though, a lot of bars and generally good people, besides the random drunk college assholes. Hope you had a good time. Eddie goes to a bar in this neighborhood when he's in town.

I have a feeling sight seeing does not take someone to this little girls neighborhood
and to suggest that is taking away from the horror of her death.

It all sounds naive of the trouble our cities are in. We need to feel this trouble not
sweep it away by saying ... i am so tough I'll walk anywhere this is how i was taught....

This young child died in her neighborhood.

I guess my point is that when I have something to do in a part of the city that is bad, it doesn't stop me from doing it either, but I don't hang out or walk around there any longer than necessary. I make sure I park in an area that is safe, I do whatever it is I'm there for, and I leave. I have no reason to stay in that area, and I will not. It's not about fear, it's about being smart and avoiding unnecessary dangerous situations.

Any city, but I was talking about Chicago.

Chances are when you were here, you were downtown or in tourist areas. This is not where the majority of the city inhabitants live or hang out. I wouldn't be scared to walk there either, but that is a small sample of what the city neighborhoods are really like. Those are the areas with the most police, and the lowest crime.

i was between nth clark st and du paul university... so whats that??? west fullerton??? whatever area it was it wasnt an area i was familiar with seeings how id not been there before. but stilll i didnt fear for my life or think myself in any danger. im sure there are areas of chicago that are considered more dodgy and if i had reason to visit those areas i would.. im not one to just wander areas in order to see what happens... or prove what a hero i am.

Eddie goes to a bar in this neighborhood when he's in town.

thanx for that info. i was unaware seeings how id not ever been to the neighbourhood before. i saw more cops downtown... but that was probs more to do with the protests than any 'norma'l behaviour chicago experiences.

as i said if i need to be in a particular area of a city then i will be. its not a hero thing.

im not assuming anything... im just speaking about me and my experience.... and my feelings.and i always belong where i am. no one owns any part of any city. theymay think they do but theres a reason for that. i know what im capable of. as i know what others are capable of. but i know how i handle situations. ive lived in cities all my life... its where i play. i always belong cause i am doing something that requires me to be in whatever part of a city i am. i dont think oh golly lets see what happens when miss whitey white walks down a street where i am the minority thats not me. if something i want to do is in some area of the city where ive not ever been or that has some sort of bad rap then i take that on board but i dont allow it to stop me doing what it is i want to do. i dont risk my life... and my self preservation skills are high... i know when hold 'em know when to fold 'em know when to walk away and know when to run. otherwise i wouldnt put myself where i do.

It's not about fear, it's about being smart and avoiding unnecessary dangerous situations.

and thats what im talking about, doing what you need to do regardless of what area of the city it is. you do your shit and you dont feel like you arent 'allowed' to be there for whatever reason.

i am a public transport person. thats how i get around so you can see why i have the attitude that i have... every city i visit my focus is getting to where i need to be and not allowing anything outside my comfort zone to prohibit me from doing so. .

This young child died in her neighborhood.

You are correct. Their are many problems that contributed to the death of this innocent child. This was not the first and will not be the last shooting or homicide in that neighborhood this year, month, week, or even that day, so why was she out at a time when most of these shootings take place? A lot of unanswerd questions, and unfortunately there most likely will not be answers or solutions as to how to solve these problems. She will be forgotten when the next child dies. 5 year old killed last night in a hit and run on the south side of Chicago. 14 year old shot in the neck last night on the west side of chicago, but that won't be a big deal because it was gang related. 2 others wounded with this child and 2 killed from the same shooting. Same place a shooting took place earlier in the day. When will it end?

Living life in these neighborhoods so different than most can imagine.
Was it an extremely hot evening?
No A/C puts many outside at 10:30 pm just to feel the cooling evening air ...
    their homes oppressive.
Sun goes down, it could have been a welcome treat, a cool lemonade.
I wish things were different. This mama too.

I don't know when it will end but my heart tells me we are all supposed to learn
something from the loss of this lovely little soul. But are we listening to our hearts?
No people are arguing not listening.

I work with a few guys that grew up on the city and 8-mile. They instructed me to blow through any red lights if the intersection was clear. Both have had friends murdered in car-jackings in broad daylight.
