Big business cyber security ... our college grads take notice, what a great field of expertise
to choose in a time of limited jobs.

And rightly so. But you DO know what cyber security has nothing to do with posting 'nasties', don't you? (Sorry, just need to make sure since my last 'faux pas' 8-) )And that this bill does nothing to improve this.

If one wants to discuss cyber security, it is probably a lot more relevant to all the issues that have been mentioned that this bill could actually cause or aggravate.
Hey thanks for reminding me! Nasties yes indeed, the bully's words.
These for all to see. People know the bullies even if they don't know their real names.

Yes it is nasties that the people in New York are talking about...
plain old nasty things being said based in lies and hate making other peoples
    lives miserable. Very miserable.

If some people would do some research their hearts might lighten to the plight of others.

And yes this bill will help the nasties and the danger they present to others ...
    it's a start at least. :D

 Wow... how many pages and still not seeing the 'reality'? Latching on to one bit of string, not seeing it's a bit of a frayed bit of rope. No further 'discussion' really necessary.

And by the way, I was responding to your post about cyber security, commenting on how this doesn't stop what you focus on. You, once again, responded with your blinkers.

Some people...? ;)8-) I think looking at the bigger and whole picture of the implications of this bill is a lot more useful to the plight of others than wearing blinkers.

    I know many techies personally,
I think not a true hacker ... yet
they are always learning though ;)

The true hackers you speak of are after the big stuff, like corporations, govt security,
etc... and often get paid for their work.

Petty crime, stalking, bullying is being done by the lay person. This the crime effecting
most people on the internet. The crime mentioned in the thread.

Did you think I didn't know about IP addresses...

but thanks for the copy and paste there

All that I mentioned in my post is relevant to 'regular folk' - hiding your IP, tracking someone else's, etc. So you are in agreement that it's an easy thing to do and one could easily flaunt the law (should one require to post name, an address and IP number), whether one looks at the 'criminal' or 'victim' side. Though you call it 'petty' crime - not sure it always ends up 'petty'. Consequences of cyber crime can be quite dire and this law will do nothing to alleviate that - on the contrary.

I don't speak of 'true' hackers Pandora - you coined this. Hackers are hackers - all at different levels. The 'everyday/average' one will plant plant viruses in your computer, hack into your computer to get your bank details, your credit card details when you make purchases; he/she will know where to look to get your personal info (which will be damn easy with this bill), etc. They are NOT the 'mega' hackers as depicted in thrillers, criminal series, etc. - just skillful techies/or savvy internet users (with varying skill levels) . Not difficult at all. Of course there are the 'big time' hackers or white hat hackers but you know we are not talking about those - not many like The Condor will be interested in Pandora or Redrock. 8-)

And I did think you didn't know much about IP addresses and how easy it was to track since you did say: "
One can track true identities, like IP tracing but most people can't do these types of checks..
(though you now seem to contradict yourself). I assumed that if you knew how things worked you wouldn't have stated something so incorrect. Maybe your techie friends can refresh your 'knowledge' on these matters. ;)

 AGAIN on point RR well done.

    Some Tips On Cyber Bullying:

Don’t respond. If someone bullies you, remember that your reaction is usually exactly what the bully wants. It gives him or her power over you. Who wants to empower a bully?

Don’t retaliate. Getting back at the bully turns you into one and reinforces the bully’s behavior. Help avoid a whole cycle of aggression.

Save the evidence. The only good news about digital bullying is that the harassing messages can usually be captured, saved, and shown to someone who can help. You need to do this even if it’s minor stuff, in case things escalate.

Talk to a trusted adult. You deserve backup. It’s always good to involve a parent but – if you can’t – a school counselor usually knows how to help. Sometimes both are needed. If you’re really nervous about saying something, see if there’s a way to report the incident anonymously at school.

*Block the bully*. If the harassment’s coming in the form of instant messages, texts, or profile comments, do yourself a favor: Use preferences or privacy tools to block the person. If it’s in chat, leave the “room.”

Be civil. Even if you don’t like someone, it’s a good idea to be decent and not sink to the other person’s level. Also, research shows that gossiping about and trash talking others increases your risk of being bullied. Treat people the way you want to be treated.

Don’t be a bully. How would you feel if someone harassed you? You know the old saying about walking a mile in someone’s shoes; even a few seconds of thinking about how another person might feel can put a big damper on aggression. That’s needed in this world.

Be a friend, not a bystander. Watching or forwarding mean messages empowers bullies and hurts victims even more. If you can, tell bullies to stop or let them know harassment makes people look stupid and mean. It’s time to let bullies know their behavior is unacceptable – cruel abuse of fellow human beings. If you can’t stop the bully, at least try to help the victim and report the behavior.

    From SAFETEENS.com http://www.safeteens.com/tips-to-stop-cyberbullying/

All can be done safely, effectively without this TUPID proposal. There's no need to have such a broad base law to to TRY and curb cyberbullying or any other internet abuse those steps above can and will be FAR more effective than this dream world proposal will ever accomplish.

Noooo, no no….please continue :D I want to see if this can be dragged out to a thousand posts.

325+ posts….. one person falling back on appeals to pathos time and again…..vs the entire forum on one side, making logical, fact-based points…..and Not. One. Single. Fucking. Point. Conceded. SHOCKING. Eventually someone will get tired of it and make a personal comment, and SOMEONE will run to the mods. Mission accomplished. It’s really, really dragged this place down over the past few months. Every thread devolving into a masturbatory exercise in contrarian trolling. Joy.

Now…lets see if I get in shit for personal comments by saying ‘one person’, instead of ‘some’……apparently, when trolling, it’s best to be vague.

So? I guess those that don't have the support of their 'computer geek' don't talk about what they don't know then? No need to be a geek to be savvy. Not a problem if you don't know either - not everyone is bothered about this. As long as it works, as long as you get what you need out of something and you know where to do if it doesn't work. I'm not interested in cars - I know basics and I am not interested to get more in depth knowledge. Not an issue. But then, I don't post in car threads talk about more advanced mechanical stuff, pretending I know. I guess if you don't know, don't put forth incorrect 'facts' - check with computer geek first (unless he/she is no longer available to ask).
Really redrock :? someone has to be a computer geek to have an opinion on this proposal
in New York? :fp: I'm thinking many will not.

I am in favor of the proposal, as are others who created it, for reasons I have stated.

Do I think it needs fine tuning yes and have I said this? .... oh yeah

Do I think even more should be done and regulated on the Internet Highway? ... I do!
    This not nearly enough!
I also believe that is coming and welcome it very much. :D

If it was in place and someone made an out right nasty lie
I could report that lie and it would be taken down,
if the abuser didn't have the guts to show their identity.
If it was a fake identity there would be legal ramifications. One person one persona!

I like this idea ... I say here's to accountability! Stand by your words or don't say them.

I got the cyber security and how you think this proposal will compromise that
which for me means additional fine tuning in the law is necessary. I just ignored that part
because I have stated before I want more regulation! A much safer environment.

But the nasties was perfect... remembering the words of bullies, this exactly what this proposal
is all about. Perfectly stated... you did.

Personally, I think this bill is being suggested because the Identity Theft lobby wants more opportunities to sell us protection for our identities. (not totally serious there but you never know) It's not enough that I have to shred all that junk mail that comes in, if this bill were to pass everywhere, I'd have to pay insurance to protect myself. It's not bad enough that some loony PJ fan sent me a death threat; if this were to pass, I might be more likely to have them appear on my doorstep. They could vandalize where I live or whatever.

I believe in personal privacy for everyone. There are plenty of laws to deal with crummy people and their rotten kids already. (bullies)
