And the nature here is unbelievable. In the last six months, i've kayaked some of the most pristine ecosystems you could imagine and seen snakes, alligators, enormous flying eagle rays, bobcats, manatees, sharks, two foot starfish, lobsters, owls, hawks, foxes, conchs, crabs, iguanas, amazing rock formations, coral reefs, fresh water springs...etc...

hey ya ... for sure ... i've paddled a bunch of rivers in the ocala area, swam with manatees in homosassa and snorkeled with sharks in the keys ... the place (like every other) has its qualities for sure ... and yeah - i'm sure if one looks hard enough - they will find what they seek however, the general population is very happy with the conformed lifestyle ... i've been there enough to know that for every one of you - there are 10 people who are happy to just eat at the chains and shop at the same big box stores ... again - it's not a bad thing, it's just not my preference ...

oh, and to add to that, I lived in Boca Raton for awhile and wouldve killed myself if I had to live there much longer. It was terrible there. I was poised to leave the state until I moved a bit further north and fell in love with it. But its definitely not for everyone here.

Nobody wants their kid to fail anymore. We dumb down the content so everyone can pass so everybody feels good. If the kid passes said test then the parents did a good job raising their kid, the kid did a good job learning the material, the teacher did a good job teaching, and the public got their money's worth out of the taxes they paid. Now switch that, if the kid fails, then the parents failed, the kid failed, the teacher failed and society failed. Now who's to blame? Well they all are duh! But who's going to fix it? Nobody, that's who!

It is ok to FAIL!!! How the hell do you ever learn anything if you're always right? How do you learn if you never received constructive criticism? Why must we (parents, teachers, society) feed the self-esteem of the kids? When I was in school the teacher was always right and the kid was always wrong, regardless of actual facts. Now it is just the opposite the teachers are usually wrong and the kids are right. We teach our kids how to get out of trouble, even if they're in the wrong. We teach our kids that there are not always negative consequences for their negative actions. It is ok to fail!
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

No hatred from me - I've never even been there! ...was talking more toward general education - or the lack thereof.

In fact, Florida seems to have the same kind of reputation as California / LA. There's much to dislike (as with anywhere as has been well-pointed out), but from this native Angelino's perspective, there's moreso to love.

It's all how you see it, I do believe.

riotgrl, you consistently make well-thought-out points, here and in other threads. Thank you.

Not only is it OK to fail - it's NECESSARY. It's how we (hopefully) learn to succeed.

I think it's interesting that Florida has such a terrible reputation.

In a way, it's good because it keeps it less crowded down here. And, it keeps us below the radar...

    Just keep trash-talking Florida.

I've lived in a lot of places. San Francisco (grew up there), Seattle (went to grad school there), Austin (worked there), upstate NY (worked there) and I'm glad this is where we ended up. I plan to work another twenty years here and just retire.

I love it here. It's beautiful, it's not too expensive, and it's NOT TOO CROWDED.

We also don't have state taxes like NY or CA.

(There's sure is a lot of generalizing and hatred in this thread though.) :wtf:

    :geek:

Justam I'm sure you know quite a bit more about life in Florida, you and JP. My first time here in the middle of summer 16 years ago I thought I had landed on the Sahara Desert. First thing I said there's no way in hell I could ever live here....it certainly felt like hell..hot hot hot. I've lived and attended many schools in just about every state up and down the east coast from Maine to where I now live. South Carolina had to be by far the worst for schools.

The state in 1976 was close if not last in education for the entire country, it appears sports education was by far more important and if you played in the money sports (football, basketball) you just got passed through HS. Even if you couldn't read a book or anything else. Florida from what I've seen in 6 years by far is not the best however here in Palm Beach County as a parent if you are diligent enough you can find those very very goood magnet schools and programs. We did just that and one of our boys had half of his 25k tuition paid for. He has to maintain a 4.0 to keep the scholarship while in a medical program and both of us will be working at his HS to payoff the rest.

Challenging these children is the key from home with what is taught in the schools here. In four years i believe it will payoff for him with a full scholarship to the college of his choice. We will sacrifice, he will sacrifice and many parents out there in Florida should sacrifice to allow their children to get ahead. It's not easy to live here but I've found far more PEACE here than in NYC, Boston, DC and MD. It's beautiful out here on the ranch..nothing like the smell of horses in the morning. :D

    Peace

My son is 8 years old in the third grade.

I just asked him this question and this was his answer. He could have gone on, but you get the point.

I asked him where he learned about what a camel is and he said "maybe I researched it"?

Not saying this proves anything, but it made me happy that he knew something about them and could conjure up a story at my request.

Nice very nice, mine are too old to ask them the same but I did ask them about a yak. The boys said "what's a yak?" :) Then my daughter said "it's like a water buffalo something I wouldn't want to ride"

sadly americans are becoming the dumbest shits on the planet. florida onward, north, east, and west... all are slipping. every single country/region out performs the us of a in young intelligence except for the north & south poles.

    this is very terrible.

we are dumb because of the following:
    1. spoiled
    2. lazy parents unwilling to educate their children; let the schools do it
    3. sports is more important and sports teams generate huge money; let's pay teachers in dogshit.
    4. teachers are fighting a uphill battle whilst blind folded, arms tied behind their backs, tongues removed and ears damaged to the point of deafness.
    5. anyone got something to add?
    17. bullies are insane these days (young people holding a victim down whilst cutting his hair off for shits and giggles; bully grows up to want to be the president of the united states. something tells me this person has been pampered their entire life. coddling turns me off.

if i had kids i would very much consider home schooling. school violence/guns, scares the shit out of me.

The sad thing is, education in America in general is weak and this is nothing new. In my first semester in college (in the fall of 1969) I asked a kid I met in the dorms what his favorite book was. He said, "I don't know- I've never read an entire book." I asked, "How did you get into college?" and he answered, "I don't know."
Wow. And look at what you do now for a living. Good on ya!

My parents were avid readers - we had so many books as children, both those that they read to us and those we searched out for ourselves. (Saturday mornings at the library was a tradition.)

Something immensely satisfying about the mental side of it, coupled with the physical - holding the book, that moment of getting to the end of a page, fingers at the bottom, ready to turn, then the turn to the next page. Like a wonderful form of gluttony - can't suck it in quickly enough.

And the smell of the paper! Beloved.

    (sorry for the side-track!)

One of the things I love the most about my work is turning middle school and high school kids on to good books. When they come back years later and tell me that they really enjoyed this or that book and what they're into reading now I get totally stoked! One of "my kids" came back and told me that helping her get into classics led her to moving to NYC to go to one of the universities there to study English Lit.

    Oh happy day! :)

expectations are low. whatever happened to striving for being the best you can be? whatever happened to parents and teachers instilling this exact fight in our young people? do the youths even give a damn? no, they have video games at home waiting on them and facebook updates to be concerned with. then we have those that are abused regularly that are so fuckered up it is disgusting.

i have not the answers. all i can mustar up is for learning to begin at home from day one. this will and should last until death, we should not ever stop wanting to learn and never stop sharing our knowledge with others. this makes the world go 'round.

about exceptations being low, here we go.
when my mom and dad both were lifeguards at the pool
they each had to swim 1 mile nonstop and do other things to become certified
this was in the last 70's early 80's.
today at the exact same pool... 12 laps plus the cpr shit and whatever else
gets you a lifeguard certificate... you can have your red shirt w/ white lettering reading you are a badass lifeguard

one of the head-honchos at the fitness center tried to get his/her certificate...fail. he/she could not swim 12 fucking laps.

exceptations will fall again. maybe 5 laps will get a fucker their lifeguarding license.
