The little girl I just had the pleasure of spending a little of the afternoon with,
    who is four,
knew what a camel was... and she's from Florida!

And she sweetly says 'looks like a teddy bear',
    puzzled I look around,

there big puffy white clouds in the bright blue sky, looked just like a Teddy Bear.

She then went back to being very busy on her mobile computer,
or whatever those things are called

Smart as a whip and from Florida, generalizing just never works.

Like with/in most things, Florida like any other place, it's what you make it to be. Florida has just about everything. Dirty Canal Water, crystal clear Springs, the best of people and the worst of people.

Lot's of different languages, cultures. All together, part of the US...but at the same time, oh so different from the rest of the US (exception maybe New York and Parts of Cali I find to be kinda similar). I often say that Florida has some of the best parts of the US and some of it's worst. Sports, education, Police, food, whatever.

    Does that make sense? :)

I moved to Florida some years ago, I'm a resident of the state. I work from Florida...hmmm I guess I'm another weird story from Florida!

(Side Note: I hope to be back in time for the Eddie Vedder shows! 8-) )

you know, I wanted to say something like this^^^, but couldnt find the right words. I have a lot of complaints about Florida, but at the same time, its pretty fucking awesome here. I've met some of the biggest douchebags in my life here, and some of the most amazing people at the same time. But yes, the education system is pretty bad.

my vision of a post-apocalyptic world is florida ... a place devoid of culture except for pockets of miami and the keys ... a place where homogenous existence is the end game ... i've been to Destin, St. Augustine, Jacksonville, Homossassa, Orlando, the Keys, West Palm Beach, Coco Beach ... i've seen a lot of florida and for all intents and purposes - it's a xerox copy from town to town ... when someone from Jersey tells you they don't eat out anymore in the state because it's all crap - that should tell ya something ... when 10 out of 10 people you ask advice for where to eat send you to a chain restaurant ... you know the place has no cultural identity ...

Well, thats a pretty crappy generalization, but we've been through this before. I know what you're talking about...on the outside a lot of Florida looks fake and without culture, but you have dive deep down and sort through the shit to get to the good stuff. There's tons of diversity here, it just hides to keep away from the blue hairs, the snowbirds, and the jerks. I can see how it would appear like that if you didnt know where to go, or what to do here.

Who are these 10 out of 10 people you speak of? The xerox copy comment is absurd unless you're just hitting the popular places in ft lauderdale and Boca Raton.

Really? Are we thinking of the same Florida?
Florida rocks ... the rest of the country and beyond is just jealous is all ;)

    The weather is amazing!
palm trees, beautiful flowers, beaches, tiki bars :D Great family fun destinations
the people friendly and sun kissed. The Keys OMG a national gem!

My best friend for a lifetime is in Bradenton/Sarasota area, there are fine restaurants
and even better gay bars! It's time for a trip back!
Always thought we'd retire there but I don't think we can ever retire

I really don't know much about the schools there but I wouldn't be able to talk
anyways with what has been going on in ours. Atlanta has its troubles too.

hey ... i'm sorry if you're offended ... i've spent a lot of time in the states and in florida and i'm just telling it like it is ... you go to a thai restaurant and the food is bastardized ... obviously, there are places here and there but let's be honest - the reality is every town is pretty much the same ... when i travel with whoever, we don't want to eat at friggin' the outback ... but no matter who you ask - they are pointing us to some chain ... are we talking to the wrong people!? ... looks like it ... but odds are if there was indeed a vibrant culture - it wouldn't be like that ...

edit: as for where i've been ... i listed ... i've seen the entire state ... obviously not every square inch but it's not like i just made a trip to orlando and generalized ...

I think it's interesting that Florida has such a terrible reputation.

In a way, it's good because it keeps it less crowded down here. And, it keeps us below the radar...

    Just keep trash-talking Florida.

I've lived in a lot of places. San Francisco (grew up there), Seattle (went to grad school there), Austin (worked there), upstate NY (worked there) and I'm glad this is where we ended up. I plan to work another twenty years here and just retire.

I love it here. It's beautiful, it's not too expensive, and it's NOT TOO CROWDED.

We also don't have state taxes like NY or CA.

(There's sure is a lot of generalizing and hatred in this thread though.) :wtf:

You summed it up nicely. I don't think it's all terrible or anything. I mean, there's not much better than spring training in March. I've eaten at good, non-chain restaurants in Florida, though they certainly are the exception to the rule.

But then you're trying to get to the airport and you're trapped on I-75 because some idiots crashed into each other and they've got the WHOLE FRIGGIN HIGHWAY detouring off through some hick town and next thing you know you're late for you goddam flight and you need to get gas near the airport and you hope nobody carjacks you at the ghetto gas station you had to stop at.

Yeah, if I never stepped foot there again I couldn't care less.

I love Florida many great memories! Each city unique.

I think because it is a vacation destination that some, if the vaction is less than great,
they judge the state based on that maybe.

Like me and Mexico visited twice, will never go back!

No, not offended, but my point is that Florida is a special case. You can easily get caught up in touristy stuff if youre not familiar, or done a lot of research, or know some locals...It looks like shit on the outside in some places, and takes some time to figure out. And a main problem is -- its over-crowded here in some places, so if you ask the wrong person, which is very likely, you might end up at a crappy thai place...As far as folks pointing you to Outback, you are either asking the wrong people or you're asking the wrong questions. There are a lot of ordinary chains from ft lauderdale to Delray/Boca...but if you asked me where to go, I would have you eating some awesome stuff anywhere from Delray north to West palm beach. In my cruddy old town alone (lake worth), there is a street where we have authentic awesome, family owned guatemalan food, German, italian, indian and a few more...A huge Finnish population, gay population, Guatemalan population..the diversity in that town alone would astonish you.

Another point is, i have a bunch of friends that moved here from the midwest over the years and most of them HATED it here for a year or two, then they began to love it once they figured out the ins and outs. Also, a lot of people here work around old people from out of town who bitch about everything, so that might be why they direct you to a chain, because they're used to people/tourists ultimately bitching no matter where you send them.

Sorry, not meaning to get this off topic thread...I just wanted to explain that isnt not always what it looks like. Im not really saying your wrong for your experiences, it just seems like you got the wrong direction...aside from jacksonville...jax really is an armpit if you ask me.

And the nature here is unbelievable. In the last six months, i've kayaked some of the most pristine ecosystems you could imagine and seen snakes, alligators, enormous flying eagle rays, bobcats, manatees, sharks, two foot starfish, lobsters, owls, hawks, foxes, conchs, crabs, iguanas, amazing rock formations, coral reefs, fresh water springs...etc...

hey ya ... for sure ... i've paddled a bunch of rivers in the ocala area, swam with manatees in homosassa and snorkeled with sharks in the keys ... the place (like every other) has its qualities for sure ... and yeah - i'm sure if one looks hard enough - they will find what they seek however, the general population is very happy with the conformed lifestyle ... i've been there enough to know that for every one of you - there are 10 people who are happy to just eat at the chains and shop at the same big box stores ... again - it's not a bad thing, it's just not my preference ...

oh, and to add to that, I lived in Boca Raton for awhile and wouldve killed myself if I had to live there much longer. It was terrible there. I was poised to leave the state until I moved a bit further north and fell in love with it. But its definitely not for everyone here.

Nobody wants their kid to fail anymore. We dumb down the content so everyone can pass so everybody feels good. If the kid passes said test then the parents did a good job raising their kid, the kid did a good job learning the material, the teacher did a good job teaching, and the public got their money's worth out of the taxes they paid. Now switch that, if the kid fails, then the parents failed, the kid failed, the teacher failed and society failed. Now who's to blame? Well they all are duh! But who's going to fix it? Nobody, that's who!

It is ok to FAIL!!! How the hell do you ever learn anything if you're always right? How do you learn if you never received constructive criticism? Why must we (parents, teachers, society) feed the self-esteem of the kids? When I was in school the teacher was always right and the kid was always wrong, regardless of actual facts. Now it is just the opposite the teachers are usually wrong and the kids are right. We teach our kids how to get out of trouble, even if they're in the wrong. We teach our kids that there are not always negative consequences for their negative actions. It is ok to fail!
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

No hatred from me - I've never even been there! ...was talking more toward general education - or the lack thereof.

In fact, Florida seems to have the same kind of reputation as California / LA. There's much to dislike (as with anywhere as has been well-pointed out), but from this native Angelino's perspective, there's moreso to love.

It's all how you see it, I do believe.

riotgrl, you consistently make well-thought-out points, here and in other threads. Thank you.

Not only is it OK to fail - it's NECESSARY. It's how we (hopefully) learn to succeed.

thank you the both of you for making a lot of sense a lot of the time. failing is a must.

Justam I'm sure you know quite a bit more about life in Florida, you and JP. My first time here in the middle of summer 16 years ago I thought I had landed on the Sahara Desert. First thing I said there's no way in hell I could ever live here....it certainly felt like hell..hot hot hot. I've lived and attended many schools in just about every state up and down the east coast from Maine to where I now live. South Carolina had to be by far the worst for schools.

The state in 1976 was close if not last in education for the entire country, it appears sports education was by far more important and if you played in the money sports (football, basketball) you just got passed through HS. Even if you couldn't read a book or anything else. Florida from what I've seen in 6 years by far is not the best however here in Palm Beach County as a parent if you are diligent enough you can find those very very goood magnet schools and programs. We did just that and one of our boys had half of his 25k tuition paid for. He has to maintain a 4.0 to keep the scholarship while in a medical program and both of us will be working at his HS to payoff the rest.

Challenging these children is the key from home with what is taught in the schools here. In four years i believe it will payoff for him with a full scholarship to the college of his choice. We will sacrifice, he will sacrifice and many parents out there in Florida should sacrifice to allow their children to get ahead. It's not easy to live here but I've found far more PEACE here than in NYC, Boston, DC and MD. It's beautiful out here on the ranch..nothing like the smell of horses in the morning. :D
