"I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married."

"No American president has ever supported a major expansion of civil rights that has not ultimately been adopted by the American people - and I have no doubt that this will be no exception," Mr. Bloomberg said.

He continued: "The march of freedom that has sustained our country since the Revolution of 1776 continues, and no matter what setbacks may occur in a given state, freedom will triumph over fear and equality will prevail over exclusion. Today's announcement is a testament to the President's convictions, and it builds on the courageous stands that so many Americans have taken over the years on behalf of equal rights for gay and lesbian Americans, stretching all the way back to the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village."

hello ! you can't see he's trying buy votes and support ?....wake up man..he's a politican (kinda) he may not be very good at it but he just suckered a whole page of train members  and if he gets re-elected he WILL drop the gay marrige issue like a bad habit and at that point I WILL say I TOLD YOU SO....

    Godfather.

p.s. here's a e-mail from his support group please feel free to join and you too can ge a fellow.

I heard that you and other folks across the country have a chance right now to apply to be summer organizing fellows. As someone who's been a fellow before, I have to tell you: You can't pass this up.

When I was a fellow last year, I got to be on the frontlines, learning how to do the organizing work that the President's grassroots campaign is recognized for.

And it led me to my job today as a regional field director for Organizing for America in Dallas, Texas.

Apply to be a summer organizing fellow by filling out this quick form, and someone will get in touch with you.

Crazy as it seems to me now, I almost didn't apply to be a fellow. I had another gig lined up already and thought my plans were all set. But a friend forwarded me the link to apply and told me, "Let's do this." So I did.

I have a lot of amazing memories -- all the friends I made, some unforgettable calls with supporters, late nights in the office, and getting to see President Obama speak in Dallas last October.

As a fellow, it was my job to recruit all the reliable, passionate volunteers I could to join local teams. Then I trained them on the skills they needed to continue planning events in their hometowns. Once those grassroots teams were built, we went to work together -- making calls, walking blocks in neighborhoods, and talking to friends and family about President Obama's record and the accomplishments of other Democrats.

I'm not going to lie: The day-to-day out in the field as a fellow can be tough sometimes. These positions are unpaid, and you'll work a lot of hours. But I learned to power through long call shifts by staying focused on how rewarding the work was -- and with a little help from coffee and takeout.

Our movement is built by this work -- and as a fellow you'll be right there making it happen.

My friend's enthusiasm got me to apply -- and I hope mine gets you to do the same and come be a part of all the important work we've got to do together before November 6th.

If you're interested, let us know now -- and we'll be in touch with next steps:

    This.

If one supports same sex marriage, there's a 99% chance they already support Obama.

If one Supported Obama, there's a smaller chance that they support SS marriage.

Fantastic! He and other politicians who understand the meaning of human rights needs to push this issue, because the push back is, so far, stronger, and that can't be allowed in a civilized society. Time for them to stand up and put a stop to the bigotry, because at the moment that bigotry is still normalized in American politics. It is WAY to acceptable for politicians to stand up and say that they are against gay marriage or that gay marriage or lifestyle is a threat to families in America. Time for this shit to stop, and for those who stand for it to be brow beaten into submission. Hopefully Obama really embraces the stance now that he's FINALLY said it out loud (wtf took him so long?!).

I still think he's trying to buy the gay vote.....but after thinking about it I believe you are right I think he is reaching for straws now in a panic for votes, but as you said he's done.

I TOTALLY disagree with you. Because I know plenty of people who vote right for many other reasons, but still support gay rights. A lot of people actually don't vote for social issues, but, rather, economic ones. There is no way that 99% of those who support SS marriage are democrats. That's ridiculous.

Saying that he supports it is one thing. (Good for him). HOWEVER, until the Supreme Court gets their head out of their asses on DOMA...nothing will happen.

He may say he supports it, but he said it's a "personal" thing — doesn't mean he's going to fight for it.

I don't give a shit if this is political or not, it's right and it's moral and it's god damn awesome that the President finally voacally supports same sex marriage and equal rights for all.

I don't think this will change much from election perspective. He may alienate some, he'll get more money from human rights organizations and he sure as fuck just got a large gay population motivated to help his reelection.

Did it ever occur to anyone that he intends to go forward? I mean, it happened in Canada; it wasn't just about votes, only to be dropped later - it actually happened. why not in the US as well? I mean, the Constitution CLEARLY makes it illegal to deny SS marriage, so I actually think it's a no-brainer that it will be legal all over the US soon enough.

Doesn't it say that everyone's equal somewhere? I thought it ensured equal rights for everyone... No?

It guarantees certain rights. Says nothing of marriage which wasn't even defined by the government until 1996.

Well, I think that this issue is contained within the idea that everyone is treated equally... I don't think that the courts can stand against this reasoning for much longer, because it is clear discrimination, and they simply can't continue discriminating in this fashion based on the laws of the country. The Justices simply won't be able to keep justifying it in the face of US laws regarding equal and human rights, is all I meant.

I was thinking the same thing, and I would think it would be a solid argument to argue that the 14th amendment is being violated.
Now if you wanted to argue that government should not be in the marriage business I am all ears, but if they are going to pass laws there needs to be equal protection. Separate but equal is not equality as we all know. So this civil union non-sense has got to stop. It isn't the same as being married whether the rights are the same or not, whether the word is the same or not...everyone knows it isn't equal, or we would still see segregated government buildings.
