Updated at 2:24 p.m. ET: President Barack Obama called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke on Friday, just before her appearance on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” to offer support as she weathers a growing firestorm over comments from Rush Limbaugh.
Fluke appeared on TODAY Friday morning to talk about the comments, in which Limbaugh called her a "slut" for speaking out as a birth control activist.
Georgetown University president, John DeGiola, also weighed in with a letter addressed to the school community criticizing the behavior of Limbaugh and other conservative commentators who have made similar statements as “misogynistic” and “vitriolic”
On Twitter, the Sleep Train mattress store chain announced it would pull ads from Limbaugh’s show in response to his comments about Fluke and birth control.
However, Limbaugh doubled down on those comments during his show on Friday. He devoted much of the first half of the three-hour show to blasting Democrats and the “liberal” media for over-hyping the issue.
“They want to blame me as the person (women) should fear,” Limbaugh told listeners.
On Friday, House Speaker John Boehner called Limbaugh’s comments “inappropriate.”
On TODAY's Facebook page, readers had heated opinions about the issue.
Some agreed with Limbaugh’s criticism: “She knew the risks, she made the choice,” wrote Mike Foster.
“Being a law school student (sic) you’d think that she’d be smart enough to go to Planned Parenthood like every other ‘normal’ person,” Jennifer Brown Bellgraph explained.
While others strongly disagreed: “This guy need (sic) to get off the air,” wrote Melissa Duncan. “There was no need to slander this woman and humiliate her to this degree.”
Updated 9:48 a.m. ET: The ongoing debate over birth control took a particularly nasty turn recently when conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a “slut” and “prostitute” for speaking out about the issue.
Fluke, a birth control activist, spoke with TODAY’s Matt Lauer about Limbaugh’s comments and the failure of a GOP-sponsored amendment that would have allowed employers at religious institutions to opt out of providing contraception in health plans.
Fluke told Lauer that she expected some backlash, especially from someone like Limbaugh. Still, the comments stung — especially since they were made on the first day of Women’s History Month.
“I think my reaction was the reaction a lot of women have had historically when they’ve been called these types of names: Initially to be stunned by it, and then to quickly feel outraged and very upset,” she told Lauer.
Limbaugh’s comments came on the heels of heated congressional debate over the so-called “Blunt Amendment,” a measure that ultimately failed in the Senate and would have nixed the Obama administration’s mandate on contraception. Lawmakers evoked Fluke’s name during the debate as someone who testified during an unofficial democratic committee hearing headed by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., about how a friend needed birth control to shrink ovarian cysts and help preserve her fertility.
Fluke had been previously blocked from testifying before a Republican-led, all-male congressional panel on contraception and religious freedom.
Limbaugh said Fluke was just trying to promote casual sex.

For mod purposes I am not calling the woman in the picture a slut. I'm just providing the picture of the woman in the article.
what has the world come to, when chicks like that are being called sluts... i'm so dissapointed...or is this just a bad pic, cause i'm not feeling the slutty vibe
edit...just googled imaged her....and they are all bland...i'm so dissapointed
there was a different pic I wanted to post that eluded to his drug addiction...but I'll refrain.
Hi Kat! Hi Sea!

My wife called me about his comments this AM as she was watching the news and working out. I laughed -- not at the comments but that people still get riled up by what this guy does for attention. He is a shock jock, he is paid to say foolish things like this. Dont listen to it!
People still listen to Rush and take him seriously?? What else is he going to say except for that kind of silly crap??

is this because she is pro contraception for all? it didn't give the background or
what lead up to his fiery comment.
His comment about Planned Parenthood sounded like he was for contraception
but then he must be assuming she is promiscuous
but of course matters not his disrespectful ways show his heart or lack of,
I should say.
Casual sex ... there is a time and place in life for that
So the distinguishing factor between slut/not slut is someone who uses birth control? Didn't I just hear that snooki is pregnant??? There may be a flaw to his thinking
"I need your strength for me to be strong...I need your love to feel loved"
But thats just me....
hehehehe
The slutier the better!!!!!!
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”

Very entertaining....
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
he seems to be digging himself into quite a hole
I share this same opinion. What a pig.
He could have talked about her "mosquito bites"
And then threatened to take a shit on her head..........
Right?
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
Hard to deny he's entertaining when he says shit like this. It gets him attention, even though it is mostly negative.

And a dope head.
His comments were meant to incite outrage, it's what he paid to do.
And paid very well, I'd imagine.
While I think those comments are crazy as well, there's a huge difference between Rush and Eddie.
Both know all about "Open mouth, insert foot"
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
I think their comments and stances come from very different places, they have very different motives and fight very different fights. That could just stem from my beliefs and viewpoints, but I find it hard to compare the two.
Each and every one of us, at some point in time....
Opens our big mouths.....
And soon regrets what comes out......
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
This is definitely true. However, the magnitude of said comments are different.
In any case, someone earlier said that he's a shock jock and this is what he's paid to do and no one should take him seriously. He's nothing more than a Howard Stern for those who find Howard Stern to be "offensive".
