free for 1st year only?
i remember looking along time ago and they wanted like 300(?) for season. i thought that was a bit much and i wouldn't pay for it....even if i lived out of market for the bears.81 is now off the air0 -

NFL Ticket is only worth it if you have a multiple TV setup otherwise you are just flipping back and forth to games which the red zone channel does for you. No Bears game Sunday means I will be watching the red zone for a good 6-7 hours with zero commercials....gotta love it.
exactly
especially if you're gambling...no remote necessary. I love it0 -

Yeah they bill you during the football season. So most of the year I've got my normal DirecTV bill, but for 5 months it increases by like $50 or something like that.WI '98, WI '99 (EV), WI '00, Chgo '00, MO '00, Champaign '03, Chgo '03, WI '03, IN '03, MI '04, Chgo '06:N1 & 2, WI '06, Chgo '07, Chgo '08 (EV:N1), Chgo '09:N1 & 2, Chgo '11 (EV:N1), WI '11:N1 & 2, Philly '12, Wrigley '13, Pitt '13, Buff '13, Detroit '14, MKE '14, Wrigley '16: N1 & N2, Seattle '18 N2, Wrigley '18: N1 & N2, Fenway '18 N1, STL '22, St Paul '23 N2, Chgo '23: N1 & N2, Wrigley '24 N1 & 20 -

good friend of mine has an unreal setup in his basement. 12 tvs (a lot of which are old hand-me-downs that have been 'donated' over the years). he has 5 direct tv feeds and the NFL/college fb packages. It is heaven. there are always people in and out during weekends (he's single, no kids). We all chip in money at beginning of year to help cover his expenses. before I got married and became a dad I practically lived there during football season. don't get there much anymore...it's too hard for me to leave.
redzone is the next best thing. I love it0 -
The Fixer wrote:crazy talk. an NFL broadcast is approx 3.5 hours. for 60 mins of game action. what are you watching for the other 2.5 hours?
Nah, that's crazy talk. You're watching the game. If you watch a 1-0 soccer game, or a good pitcher's duel in a baseball game, is the only thing worth watching that one score, or the one time a batter gets a hit? I know there are a lot of commercials and stuff, and lots of down time, but it's all part of relaxing and watching a game, and when there is downtime you can go get a beer or switch over to see what's going on in another game.
If all you watch is highlights then the entire games might get boring, as you're getting accustomed to only seeing the exciting parts. Part of the fun of watching a game is seeing the whole thing unfold, bad plays and all. If you only see the scoring highlights then you're not seeing many good defensive plays (unless the defense scores) and to me that's not football. Red Zone to me is football for people with short attention spans, or gamblers who are more concerned with their bets than watching a game. It serves a purpose, it's just not for me. Watch the whole movie, not just the trailer."See a broad to get dat booty yak 'em, leg 'er down, a smack 'em yak 'em!"0 -

well, we disagree. I watch a ton of football. I think the NFL product sucks, so I have trouble watching just one game at a time. with all the commercials and stoppages for replays, ref conferences, etc it's easy to get bored. the best part of NFL sundays is the action as a whole, not just one game (unless it's playoffs)
and yes, I am a gambler. I love being bounced from game to game. I do the same thing with the remote anyway. it's like you're watching multiple games at once (I also have my laptop up so I can follow along and know when to flip to a game if something is going on)
IMO the prime time games are the worst. Fine now since there is still baseball on to flip to, but once the World series ends the prime time nfl games are brutal. my favorite is touchdown, commercial, kickoff, commercial. you can go 10 minutes without seeing a play from scrimmage.
It's not about just seeing the scores in football. for me it's more about avoiding all of the non-action that is so common in the nfl. baseball and soccer are continuous action. not as much reason to flip channels0 -
About the Sunday Ticket price, as mentioned Free is for new D-TV subscribers. Regular Sunday Ticket is now $199. This gets you every game in HD. There is also a Sunday Ticket Max. This gets you every game, RedZone channel and the ability to watch games on your phone / PC or whatever. This will set you back $300+.
That being said, I've had Sunday Ticket since '99 and I haven't paid their full price in quite some time. All it takes is a phone call and usually you can get 50% offI've met Rob

Well in your case, the Ticket is absolutely worth it. I plan on a similar setup when the fiance and I buy a house out in the burbs...still 2-3 years until that happens.0 -

I guess it depends on what you consider "continuous action". In baseball you probably spend more time watching a batter knocking dirt off his cleats, adjusting their batting gloves, or a pitcher constantly trying (usually a futile attempt) to pick off the runner at first base, than actual action. I think you probably just have more tolerance to downtime in baseball than football. I find the downtime in football OK (not so much the commercials, just time between plays) to be pretty exciting. It's a game of move/counter move, setting up and audible, the play doesn't start when the ball is snapped.
As for soccer, seems like every game I watch a team takes forever to get the ball deep in the other teams zone, and it gets exciting for a few minutes, then they just boot it out 40 yards the other direction. But people find the rest of the game exciting, and I'm clearly not a fan."See a broad to get dat booty yak 'em, leg 'er down, a smack 'em yak 'em!"0 -

I dont' agree, but fair points. since the NFL implpemented instant replay I just think the product has taken a turn for the worse. this culminated last year when the lions were robbed on that TD pass to calvin johnson vs the bears. what's a catch anymore? what's a penalty? drives me insane while the refs talk about a play for 5 minutes becaues they don't know either.
I'm not a big soccer fan either. I liked watching the world cup though. no stoppages, quick games, no commercials. it was kinda nice to watch.
I love everything about baseball (which is much more mental than football), so I'm probably a bit irrational there. like you said, I def have more tolerance for mlb downtime than I do for that in the NFL.
as much as I rip the NFL I am glad it's back. sports are awesome0 -

It's evil and genius at the same time. It sounds like a great deal. But it costs Direct TV nothing to provide the service to the marks this year and next year their eggs will hatch, $200 at a time.
Lets say only 20% of your base is willing to spend $200 each year for Sunday Ticket. But what if 80% of your subscribers are unaware of an automatic renewal. Cha-Ching!Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0 -

The replays on all scoring plays are ridiculous. I think with football, it's about the way the game unfolds. You miss certain possessions and it can kinda be like watching a movie and missing out an important plot point.
I don't watch much soccer, but yeah the WC was nice to watch, but I felt like you could flip away from it, check back to see if one team was getting momentum, and flip away or stay.
Baseball, till playoff time to me is about the most flippable sport there is.0 -
