As courageous as Junior Seau was on the field, he ended his life with a downright cowardly act. And he has three kids that will suffer and live without their daddy. Very sad..
football, as we know it, will likely not last the century. it's crazy but maybe baseball has the best chances of moving forward...
old school football is already gone. we now have glorified 7 on 7 games happening.
i love watching the game, but i think maybe the game should be gone
Why should it be gone? These guys know it's a dangerous game....they choose to play it. All these ridiculous articles being written make it sound like these guys are forced to play football.

This is just part of the news cycle after something tragic happens, the over-reactions about it should be shutdown. There's too much money involved, it's never going to go away, just more scrutiny will mean more and more safety rules, etc. You see similar stuff when accidents happen in Nascar, Indy car, etc. It's more amazing to me that boxing, MMA, UFC, etc are still popular.

Ravens Terrell Suggs tore his achilles playing basketball, probably out for the 2012 season... :fp:

i can't begin here...this demonstrates the general complete lack of understanding of class and cultural structures helping to define our lives.

seriously dudes are dying because of this sport and you say this is an overreaction... :fp:

Indifference, it's all about the white man keeping the black man down.

Playing football is fun. Did you ever play it in school?

and we are off
you jest, but what is the racial and class makeup of the owners who get to sit in their box seats making shit tons of money off the gladiators on the field? what is the racial and class make up of those playing again?
To think the NFL will just be shut down or go away is quite ridiculous. I mean smoking kills way more people than the NFL and I can still buy cigarettes if I want. Changes? Probably. But going away, no.

I get it, I'm just saying this is what happens with the news cycle. Somebody will argue the extreme of one side and somebody will take the extreme to the opposite side. There were articles last night about we should ban college football. My point was that stuff like that isn't going to happen. People die in auto racing and the sport keeps going. As the studies find out more and more about the dangers of football I'm sure the sport will change and more and more parents will not want their kids playing it. But the stance that football should just be banned altogether is an overreaction. Look around this country, things that are dangerous don't get banned when there is money involved (see tobacco companies). Just my opinion on what will happen, not saying what is the right thing to do.

In high school or the NFL? Does "the man" have something against middle-upper class white dudes?
Also, did you ever play high school football?
well since it's tough for poorer kids to afford football equipment there are a lot of upper-middle class white kids playing the game, but as they progress into lives that offer other opportunities besides sport interest in a game that takes 20 years off your life wanes it's pretty well documented. no i did not play high school football, i played baseball at the collegiate level, golf and basketball in high school. i'm not sure if that means i am not allowed to speak on the subject of people dying too young because they play a sport.
It's more amazing to me that boxing, MMA, UFC, etc are still popular.
Is boxing really popular?? I always thought it was dying out at a pretty steady rate.
I'd bet there are more long term type injuries in an NFL week than I've ever heard from UFC.
Yep, I think you're right on both points. I know boxing isn't really popular like it once was. I was just saying that it surprises me that we still consider 2 people getting in a ring and trying to beat the crap out of each other a sport. And I enjoy a good boxing match, it's just an interesting thing what we consider acceptable/appropriate.

i'm just thinking that the nfl is gonna be dodging lawsuits and the money they are raking in might not be so lucrative. i do agree with pretty much everything you're saying though.

Yep, it will be interesting to see what lawsuits are filed against the league over the next few years.
At least we still have the NBA playoffs to watch for now I miss the NFL and need my sports fix.

There are currently 1200 ex-players suing the NFL for football related injuries.
Alright, alright, alright!

well football's been nearly banned by presidential decree before and it's still going strong...just getting crazier. i have had three football players at the DIA level in my classes this year and the bruises they get at just this level are gross. and yes NBA playoffs minus one of it's biggest chokers are fun to watch.

That sums up my life. I had the skills to play outside linebacker for a Big Ten school and the Colts but decided the risks were not worth it. Of course, this was all decided after a secret meeting with the Royal Assembly of the Stonecutters.
