The NFL is printing money and has been for decades. It can pay the musical acts at its signature event.
they're printing money because they are a successful business. successful businesses do things like this.
and they've never paid acts before. the acts performed for free for the unparalleled exposure of performing for 120 million fucking people. there's a lot of things to rip the nfl about, but i don't think this is one of them. any of the other leagues would do the same thing, if they were fortunate enough to be in the same position.
and it's not like these are struggling musicians that the nfl is strong arming or something....these are the biggest acts in the world. i could give 2 shits if beyonce paid to play the super bowl. who the fuck cares? she would make up that money ten fold with her subsequent tour.
rip away over the increased illegal contact and hands to the face calls. this is just business to me.

I get them not paying the act since the exposure an artist receives is huge, but to ask the artist to pay them seems a bit much to me. Just goes along with the rest of the bullshit with the NFL squeezing every last dollar out of everything they can regardless of the impact it has on the game (see- Thursday night football). Obviously something like this has no impact on the actual games, but just seems a bit much when you add this on top of the rest of the bullshit that goes on in this league
They are a successful business, sure, but no business is successful forever. For me this is just one more instance of them trying to milk every last penny they can, regardless if the means to do that makes sense to their business model or not. The product is watered down, preseason ticket prices are a joke, regular season ticket prices are not much better, there are too many commercials during games, they are looking at ways to add games regardless of what that will mean to player safety, etc. The list goes on. Now they are going to charge acts to play the halftime show? How much additional revenue is that really going to bring in, and how much is it even worth when it makes them look petty and small? There might be acts willing to pay to play for them, but I still think it is a bad idea.

but don't most successful businesses, and successful people, try to milk every last penny any chance they can get? you don't become successful by giving shit away....then once you become super successful, why would you change what got you there? that doesn't make sense.
everything else you mentioned, i understand and am pretty much with you (and what you said is an issue for all other leagues as well, except for the hypocrisy of talking about adding more games while cracking down on player safety).
this is a behind the scenes arrangement between the nfl and some shitty super popular recording artist. it has no affect on you or i. it has no effect on the game itself. you and i will watch regardless (though i usually skip the halftime show anyway-haha). they are doing this because they can. and any other entity that could, would try to do the same thing as well. it is unprecedented exposure for whoever performs. to me, i see how it makes sense.
I agree with The Juggler on this one....if you know many people who have made a shit ton of money they dont stop doing what it was that made them able to accumulate the shit ton of money in the first place. If this performance has become a marketing opportunity for the musical act selected I can understand where the NFL is coming from. It is a sponsorship opportunity the same as putting company logos all over the place.
When I was lucky enough to go to the game I was in getting beer while Beyonce was wowing all of the women in the audience and watching at home.
Will be interesting to see if you are right. My bet is the One Direction management sees this as the perfect opportunity to get their band booked at the Super Bowl. Do they need it? Nope. Do they give a shit about the coin it will take to secure this spot? Even less than they need it.
nothing wrong with the NFL charging acts for the exposure. it will be the largest TV audience for the year so those acts are gaining incredibly exposure. not sure why anyone thinks the nfl is wrong.
and fuck phil simms and mike carey. the nfl should have told carey to work whatever games they assigned him to. i guess it's ok to work games with players convicted of felonies, wife beaters, drug offenders and every other crime but god forbid he works a game because of a team name. how high and fucking mighty of him. and simms says he won't say the name redskins on the air this year. shut up Phil and say whatever the fuck the name of the team is or get another job. PC bullshit in this country is so out of fucking control

Yeah, those 2 are just trying to create headlines for themselves. Just when you thought Phil Simms couldn't get any worse. And Mike Carey saying he didn't want to ref a game because of the name of a team??? Just shut up and do your fucking job.

I don't see anything wrong with Carey keeping it private while he was working and talking about it now. Dude quietly stood up for something he believed in for 6 or 7 years or whatever and mentioned it now that he is gone. Good for him. I think it says more than that he did it before there was a media firestorm around it as well.
I have asked off projects at work because I don't believe in things ethically or morally. My boss respected my opinion and didn't tell me to just do my fucking job. I see nothing wrong with it.

so i guess then we can say Mike Carey has no problem with convicted dog fighters, wife beaters, drug offenders, etc. since he had no problem working their games. once you take a stance like that you leave it open to interpretation that you have no problems with the games you are working.

I have no idea what he has a problem with and what he doesn't but I don't fault people for taking a stand on their opinions. Individual players are also a very different thing than a team. You will find some type of criminal in every line of work.
Yeah, I can assure you that would never happen. Fortunately I didn't have to find a different job because people respected my opinion.

People are entitled to their beliefs. My problem with it is that when they come out and say this stuff, the story becomes about them and not the actual issue. Now everyone will be sure to pay attention to see if Phil Simms says Redskins at all whenever he's doing a Redskins game.
And sure, Carey is retired now, but him coming out saying this has his name in the headlines.
I think it's just this Redskins thing in general...I'm just so sick of hearing about it and I don't care either way what happens with it. Unfortunately, Snyder seems set on fighting it to the end so this won't be going away anytime soon.

I hear you. I don't know how I feel about the Simms thing. Sure, Carey is in the headlines, but whatever, it will be gone in a couple days and he stated an opinion he had on a current topic which he has clearly had a strong belief on for a while.
Yeah, I hear you. I haven't put too much thought into it. I just almost compare it to if there were a MLB team called the Harlem Negros or something like that, so I see why it is offensive. I also find it interesting that the Indians are trying to quietly phase out Chief Wahoo while Snyder is going down kicking and screaming.

The best part is that Phil Simms is such a dope that you know he's going to accidentally say "Redskins" during a broadcast at least once this year.
I definitely see how it is offensive. I know it has been an issue over the years, but it just seems like over the past year or 2, it has become the most offensive thing in the world. Is that just the overly PC society we live in these days or what is it that has caused all the recent uproar? That's the part I really don't understand.

Cliffy it's not about respecting someone's opinion or not. i just think it's a very bad precedent to set. by allowing it you are leaving the door open for all kinds of requests to not do assignments for personal opinions. it's just a bad precedent and frankly surprised the NFL went along with it and why i would be very hesitant to start down that path. and we have seen how dumb some people's personal opinions are so where do you draw the line on what is worthy of getting out of a assignment or not?

Probably fodder for a different thread but I think I could respect your opinion at the same time as I have to fire/replace you because you stand your moral ground and refuse to do your work.

I mean, I don't think it is refusing to work. Who knows what would have happened had the scheduler not granted his request.
The flags last night were a debacle. I understand that it is the preseason and that games may be called differently once the real thing starts. I just don't want to see key plays negated all season because a defensive back lightly touched a receiver beyond five yards. That waters down the product.
Yeah, the flags have been ridiculous so far this preseason. It's almost impossible for there to be zero contact at all between a DB and WR. There was a play in the Bears game Thursday night where the WR initiated the contact with the DB, but the DB got flagged. I really hope this doesn't happen in the regular season...we're going to be looking at 3.5-4 hour games being a normal thing.
yeah there is no way they can call things that tight once september rolls around. i think it's going to be like college basketball last year with all those whistles early in the year then it died down...
more so than than the contact between the db and the wr is the hands to the face in the trenches. that is how football is played. most of it is incidental contact too. last night's game with the eagles was pretty much unwatchable...though i heard belichek and kelly told the refs to call a tight game to have their players be more prepared
Oh yeah, the hands to the face thing on the line of scrimmage has been awful too. And like you said, a majority of the time it is just incidental contact. It's bad enough to be watching preseason football, but now the games are lasting 3.5-4 hours. Ridiculous.
No one understands what a penalty or catch entails. So they have replay, which still doesnt clarify things and slows down an already slow game. A 60 minute game takes 3+ hours. What do we really watch?
I dont understand why anyone attends non-primetime games. Much better to be on the couch flipping directv or watching the red zone channel.
Goodell ruined this league. (I dont want to hear about how popular the league is. Shit like american idol and justin timberlake are also popular, even though both are beyond horrible. The american public is dumb)
Watch college football. Its a billion times better. Only sport where volcanoes can affect games. Amazing!!

For some unbeknownst reason, the nfl gets away w murder and everything else.
I hope mark cuban is right. Luckily, the godell effect continues...
Will be interesting to see if you are right. My bet is the One Direction management sees this as the perfect opportunity to get their band booked at the Super Bowl. Do they need it? Nope. Do they give a shit about the coin it will take to secure this spot? Even less than they need it.
i was watching some of the 49ers replay last night....new stadium looks pretty cool. you said you did work there? what's it like in person?
Driving around getting high a couple hours before the team flight. Unreal. And then Tomlin plays both guys in the game the next day...what is this, Baltimore??

they already had to replace the sod at the new stadium. did they use the same people who do the grass at the Linc?

I missed that trip. One of my clients sold product to them and went out to visit last year as they were building. Had other things going on and couldn't fly out. I sent one of my guys to conduct another site survey about a month ago. We finish our installations actually the week before their home opener. Hope we get everything in place correctly! (I am the Sales Director and this is one of my Accounts so I consider that "I am doing work there" but I actually sold installations at every MLB park and we are working on most of the NFL stadiums now...and I dont get to go to most. Could have gone to this one though! I sell/deliver the work, some guys who work harder than me but get paid less do the actual onsite work, )
I walked in from picking our nephew up from football practice last night and my wife had the 49ers replay on and was freaking out that they were not showing "her Eagles" on NFL Network as I had told her they would earlier in the day. I grabbed the remote, flipped over to ABC and watched the Birds eat up the Steelers. Lol.
49ers have looked crappy this preseason but I am very impressed with Chip Kelly's offense -- once again Sanchez looked solid. Fucking 49ers trade for the modern day Ryan Leaf to be their backup and could have just signed Sanchez off the street. Shite. Really hoping #7 stays healthy!

ah, okay....what line of work are you in again?
and if 7 goes down, hey, i'm sure the birds would be willing to part with the sanchise for maybe a 3rd or possibly 2nd round pick perhaps??

everything else you mentioned, i understand and am pretty much with you (and what you said is an issue for all other leagues as well, except for the hypocrisy of talking about adding more games while cracking down on player safety).
this is a behind the scenes arrangement between the nfl and some shitty super popular recording artist. it has no affect on you or i. it has no effect on the game itself. you and i will watch regardless (though i usually skip the halftime show anyway-haha). they are doing this because they can. and any other entity that could, would try to do the same thing as well. it is unprecedented exposure for whoever performs. to me, i see how it makes sense.
When I was lucky enough to go to the game I was in getting beer while Beyonce was wowing all of the women in the audience and watching at home.
My bet is they drop this plan before ever getting a dime.
"...I changed by not changing at all..."
and fuck phil simms and mike carey. the nfl should have told carey to work whatever games they assigned him to. i guess it's ok to work games with players convicted of felonies, wife beaters, drug offenders and every other crime but god forbid he works a game because of a team name. how high and fucking mighty of him. and simms says he won't say the name redskins on the air this year. shut up Phil and say whatever the fuck the name of the team is or get another job. PC bullshit in this country is so out of fucking control
I see nothing wrong with it.
don't like the aspects of the job get a new one. good thing i'm not your boss.
I definitely see how it is offensive. I know it has been an issue over the years, but it just seems like over the past year or 2, it has become the most offensive thing in the world. Is that just the overly PC society we live in these days or what is it that has caused all the recent uproar? That's the part I really don't understand.
Driving around getting high a couple hours before the team flight. Unreal. And then Tomlin plays both guys in the game the next day...what is this, Baltimore??
I walked in from picking our nephew up from football practice last night and my wife had the 49ers replay on and was freaking out that they were not showing "her Eagles" on NFL Network as I had told her they would earlier in the day. I grabbed the remote, flipped over to ABC and watched the Birds eat up the Steelers. Lol.
49ers have looked crappy this preseason but I am very impressed with Chip Kelly's offense -- once again Sanchez looked solid. Fucking 49ers trade for the modern day Ryan Leaf to be their backup and could have just signed Sanchez off the street. Shite. Really hoping #7 stays healthy!
and if 7 goes down, hey, i'm sure the birds would be willing to part with the sanchise for maybe a 3rd or possibly 2nd round pick perhaps??
(Because it looks like things are going well off the field)
