....So the reason why they are overblown is because they sold quite a few tickets and made the most money on tour last year.....that's your reasoning. If it is that's the case that's very weak even for your standards you had a better point disliking ACDC than this one.
BTW if things were reversed and PJ sold all those tickets and made all that money would your views of the band be still objective?
Fact is the band U2 puts on a good enough show to sellout stadiums around the world and in this economy that's a great feat especially since you can get a floor seat for $55 which didn't change for 2 years!

U2 annoy me.
PJ don't.
U2 crave the spotlight, PJ do not.
For that, I don't care if PJ sell all the tickets in the world, because they are down to earth humble artists.
Wish I could say the same for Bono and the guys.
You sure...PJ20 isn't craving the spotlight. There was no U2 whatever.

Having become bored stiff with everything on the ipod I listened to all of U2s albums last week for the first time in years. They have written some stunning stuff.

But I will go with The Stones on the Tattoo You tour for 200 Alec.

I've been a longtime fan (since just after the Joshua Tree hype made them megastars), and have seen them on every tour since Popmart 1997. Their show is more scripted and orderly than a PJ show, due to all the moving parts that need to flow (similar to a Rolling Stones tour), but the most recent show I saw was amazing, and featured several surprises.
I had seen the opening night of the first North American leg of U2-360 in 2009, but the 2011 version of the show had evolved into less promotion for the new album and more of a career-spanning setlist. Because the 2011 show I saw was in Nashville, they tagged a song with part of "The Wanderer" (a 1993 track which featured Johnny Cash on lead vocal), with Bono doing his best Man In Black impression. They'd never performed that song in front of an audience before, and the only known live recording was a runthrough done for a televised tribute to Johnny Cash, filmed at a soundcheck in an empty arena.
That would have been enough surprise, but the end of the show was where the real magic happened: Bono, after the last song of the last encore, with the rest of his bandmates nearly off the stage, called everybody back and pulled an audience member from the front row of the pit (and pit front row at a U2 show is the same price as back-of-the-field GA, with a lot more camping out before the show, and isn't some rich-guy VIP thing). The man was blind, and had been holding up a sign that said "Blind Guitarist" all night. Bono handed the guy his Gretsch, asked him what song he wanted to play, and let the (clearly awestruck) guy dedicate the song ("All I Want is You," which features line, "You say you'll give me eyes in a moon of blindness") to his wife. The guy played guitar, Bono sang with full energy, and the other bandmates gradually picked up their instruments (Edge moving to piano). It was simply awesome. At the end, Bono gave the guy his guitar (I read that security took it off his hands and got him out of the stadium safely with it).
As long as they can still do that kind of thing, I'm still a fan.
Yeah, your right. Way overblown. Been together longer than PJ. Have 2 more albums than PJ.
Sold 150+ million records...that would be just a couple more than PJ. Have 22 Grammy Awards. Campaign for a lot of great causes. Are in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame...yeah, way overblown.
You missed pretentious, self-indulgent, self righteous, pious and who gives a fuck about a Grammy
the two sides of the debate, nicely summed up.
I'm with HILDE....just like the DMB bashing, I just don't get why some PJ fans have to get so up in arms about other successful, long standing bands :?

Whether a band ANY band craves the spotlight is pointless....why, isn't the point of being a major musical act is to get into the SPOTLIGHT playing music people around the world MAY like. By doing so like the band U2 by carving out more of that spotlight can therefore have more influence to better this world. Well atleast they're trying to do such a thing.....is that a bad thing....to better this world through music I don't think so. Hate their music all you want but craving the spotlight to me is a weak point to dislike this band .......ALL musical bands want, need or crave the spotlight.

Yes the music can be good but I won't feel any connection to a band with a big ego.
@ 12345AGNST1.....no I would not like that, I'd be more a Kurt Cobain type, hate people following me and hanging around me, P-R-I-V-A-C-Y it's priceless to me.
You think Kurt didn't have a huge ego?
I think some people can handle fame easier than others. At least Bono has done a huge amount of good with his fame. You can't honestly say that Bono won't leave a postive legacy to the world.

No, because....
1. Their lyrics are cheap and have no meaning
2. Every song sounds the same
3. Their singer has an annoying voice
4. Bogans in Australia listen to them, they are the band for the uncultured feral bogans, I hate those types of people and this band attracts a massive bogan following (if you don't know what a bogan is then I can explain to you)

See, your argument might be valid if they still weren't setting concert attendance records 30 years into their career. You see pop musicians come and go. So if you wanted to say the Fray were overblown 4 years ago, then you could be right. U2 have stood the test of time for 30 years.
1) Their lyrics have plenty of meaning.
2) U2 have changed their sound more than any popular band out there. Like the person said before, you have not listend to their music, because if you would have listened to the five record stretch of Joshua Tree, Auchtung Baby, Zooropa, Pop and All That You can't Leave Behind you would realize how wrong you are. U2 have changed up their music way more than Pearl Jam has. U2 jumped around different genres while Pearl Jam stays in one genre. U2 is a band that takes risks and pushes the envelope.
3) Sure you can think Bono has an annoying voice. But I gotta believe having millions of people all over the world come hear you sing means that you don't have an annoying voice. I would argue Bono is the greatest frontman of all time.
I think Thoughts_Arrive was talking about ACDC but you make great points about U2! All the reasons why I love U2 (especially point 2).
And yes, Bono is the greatest frontman of all time.
