  • I saw U2 in 1981 for six bucks. I would pay that again, but that is about it.
Roger Waters I will go see again and again. If I get back from Amsterdam in time , I might go to Waters in Hartford, CT. That is if I have any cash left after paying $400 per night for PJ.

Yeah, your right. Way overblown. Been together longer than PJ. Have 2 more albums than PJ.
Sold 150+ million records...that would be just a couple more than PJ. Have 22 Grammy Awards. Campaign for a lot of great causes. Are in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame...yeah, way overblown.

there is nothing in that article that indicates that U2 are overblown.

i havent been a dedicated U2 fan since the late 80s. ive been too busy with my life and discovering other music however i have seen them live in recent times and they put on one mother of a show... even i was impressed and i dont go for that frou frou smoke and mirrors shit lesser talents tend to rely on. im sure they realise playing rock music for a living isnt rocket science and i doubt they take themselves a seriously as all their detractors think they do. bono is outspoken... nothing wrong with that. as for dave, larry and adam.. how would we know what theyre thinking... could be the same as bono which is probably why we hear so much from him. bono is in a privileged position and he knows it and hes trying to use that for good. give the guy a break.. hes as entertaining as fuck and thats all we can ask without sounding too precious ourselves.

$288 mil, not a bad years earner.
I'm not sure how accurate past media articles have been (correct me if im wrong), but it has been documented that U2 avoid paying tax...so thats possibly take home $$$ too!!
I saw them play Melbourne about 5 years ago when Kanye opened (seemed a strange combo). Prob worst concert i've been to! The sound when Kanye was on was terrible, which wasnt so bad cos im no fan anyway....
When U2 hit the stage (for what seemed like only 15 minutes) ....(yessss we've been spoilt at PJ shows), Bono kept preaching that Australians dont donate enough $$ to charities (personally a massive slap to my face) , and that we should all donate now. he constantly did this in between each song. He must have felt like a knob when he found out per capita Aussies are one of the highest to donate ( which he later acknowledged in a double page letter he had written himself in the hearald sun).
I wont be attending another U2 concert, and turn the radio station over now any time i here their songs.
Pretty drastic i know, but maybe they should pay some tax in their own country before smacking me in the face with a wet fish!!

nice. i'm not really a big u2 fan, but that was well-put. and yeah, what's wrong with using your fame and fortune to do some good? maybe Bono's intentions are self-centered, maybe they're not, but i'm sure there are more than a few people in Africa who don't give a fuck what his intentions are and are just appreciative that someone is paying attention to them....fyi i'm not really even sure with this is all about, just perusing the boards and came across this post.

i have ragged on bono before.specifically in relation to the (PRODUCT)RED campaign. yes the proceeds from the sale of those products do a great deal of good for the less privileged members of our global family.im just not down with the consumer aspect of it. i know i know who cares where the money comes from so long as it gets to where its needed. why must we feel we need to get something in return for our charity.. when the act itself should be enough. but i guess if youre gonna buy something that you need why not buy the (P)R product.

Hating on U2 seems to be the cool thing to do these days, which is just plain silly. Personally I think they're one of the best bands of our time, and I hope they keep going for years to come. I could care less about how rich they are or how pretentious Bono is. Bottom line is they're a great fuckin' band. End of story. Unlike some folks, I really enjoyed their last record. Some really cool stuff on there: No Line, Unknown Caller, Moment of Surrender, Fez-Being Born, Breathe, White as Snow, Cedars of Lebanon. Much more interesting than their previous album in my opinion.

U2 = Greatness. You don't set concert records 30 years into your career without being great. This overblown talk is ridiculous. Do you think people go to shows to hear Bono talk? No, they go for the music, for the event.

U2 has done more for good causes around the globe than ANY world leader has in the last 20 years. They do it because they came from lesser lives and struggled to make it where they are today. They've worked hard and became extremely successful, and now they use that success as an outlet for creating awareness for causes we, the public, might not have been aware of. What's pretentious, self-indulgent, or self-righteous about that???

Some people just like to hate on what's popular. I'm not as into U2 as I once was, but the insults/hatred thrown towards them is really baffling. If you don't like them just don't listen...what's the point of creating a thread to say the most popular rock band in the world is overblown because a lot of people went to their concerts? There are obviously a lot of big U2 fans on this board. It's like some people think it's cool to hate U2.

Im no U2 basher, I just mearly wanted to point out the fact that at the Melb 06 concert Bono overstood the gapping line beween raising awareness and dictatorship! And having since spoken to a lot of friends who where at that show, I realise im not alone.( anyone else from that show who would like to comment most welcome).
Lets face it, listening to music and going to see a band play music that you enjoy is a very special personal experience and if that band wants to raise awareness about something they believe strongly in that’s fine… but after EVERY song and with graphic footage of starving, diseased and dying children (on a 60ft screen) during some of the songs was a little confronting for me to say the least, I took it personally, and it was not necessary.
I paid $100 gen ad to listen to some good music and enjoy the show, not to be shamed into feeling like I havnt done enough.
I believe most people with a heart already feel empathy towards the less fortunate in their desperate times of need, and try to help out any way they can.
Saint Bono :geek: , please don’t make me feel guilty for being fortunate enough to provide food, shelter and medicine for my family. I pay my taxes, and I know a lot of that gets blown by politicians in their pursuit of their own intrests, but a lot also gets to where its needed.
Enough negativity already… Happy New Year all.
Just needed to vent some, after all work on NY eve and NY day can do that to a person.
Glass is gonna be half full (or fully full) after work when I manage to finally crack one open for the new year!! Cheers all, to good health…… and many more PJ tours to come!
