Hating on U2 seems to be the cool thing to do these days, which is just plain silly. Personally I think they're one of the best bands of our time, and I hope they keep going for years to come. I could care less about how rich they are or how pretentious Bono is. Bottom line is they're a great fuckin' band. End of story. Unlike some folks, I really enjoyed their last record. Some really cool stuff on there: No Line, Unknown Caller, Moment of Surrender, Fez-Being Born, Breathe, White as Snow, Cedars of Lebanon. Much more interesting than their previous album in my opinion.

It's like, totally the cool thing. You aint cool unless you piss on U2.

I got into U2 specifically because of the hate here. They're freakin amazing. One of my favorite bands easily.

edit: and there last record was good. Much better than the previous 2, a huge step in the right direction. Breathe is a classic.

I don't hate on them because it is cool.
I dislike preacher Bono, overrated guitarist Edge and their music is too poppy.

What makes The Edge overrated, in your opinion?

He is nothing spectacular, yet he is amped up so much.
    He is average.

  • U2 rocks, and Bono is still an incredible singer.

Bono might get a little too preachy at times but hey its better that then them giving a half assed show and not giving a shit about anyone

They are great in my book, they have a lot of timeless music

Joshua tree and Achtung Baby are fantasic albums. After that, they are a singles band. Never seen them live though.

Why does Bono always wear sunglasses and why does the Edge always wear a beanie?

    That's not a fashion accessory.

    From Bono:

"[I have] very sensitive eyes to light. If somebody takes my photograph, I will see the flash for the rest of the day. My right eye swells up. I've a blockage there, so that my eyes go red a lot. So it's part vanity, it's part privacy and part sensitivity"

And the Edge is bald so he probably has a beanie to look cooler

I couldn't disagree more. Just because he doesn't "shred" or play crazy warp-speed guitar solos like Mike McCready doesn't make him average. It just makes him different. The Edge's playing is incredibly unique and completely defines the band. It's what gives U2's music it's emotional heft. (that and Bono's vocals of course). I could say more, but I'll let Bruce Springsteen say it for me:

    Skip ahead to 3:11.

And if Bruce's words aren't enough to convince you of the Edge's greatness, I give you this:

    Mind blowing.

I agree. And that Love Is Blindness solo always gives me chills. I always show that to people who say he's overrated or say he's average. They always change their opinions.

This is possibly Edge's best song on guitar.

....So the reason why they are overblown is because they sold quite a few tickets and made the most money on tour last year.....that's your reasoning. If it is that's the case that's very weak even for your standards you had a better point disliking ACDC than this one.

BTW if things were reversed and PJ sold all those tickets and made all that money would your views of the band be still objective?

Fact is the band U2 puts on a good enough show to sellout stadiums around the world and in this economy that's a great feat especially since you can get a floor seat for $55 which didn't change for 2 years!

There's a huge difference between not liking something and saying something sucks because you don't like it. I don't like Led Zeppelin, but they definitely don't suck.

U2 crave the spotlight, PJ do not.

i like a lot of U2 but only a handful of songs after Achtung baby; their last 2 albums were very uninteresting to me, saw them on the vertigo tour and liked the 1 show but have no intention of seeing them again really. If they put out a good album i'll spin it but that's about as "into" them I am these days.

semi rant about U2 haters/ general "sellout" band haters

Personally, all I really care about is if their music is still good. I really don't care what they do with it as long as the music is still good. You can say U2 are "sellouts" but I say dont talk shit because most likely you're not in a world famous rock band. You don't know how its like to go from a small time band to a huge world famous super star band. I mean, isn't the whole point of becoming a "rock star" to become famous? If I were in a rock band, I sure as hell would like to become famous. If you're dedicated enough to be in a band, and chose that as your career, then you better fucking expect to become famous and make money. I'm sure every rock star goes through an ego trip, even eddie does on stage. I mean seriously, if your 45 years old and your career is playing loud rock music to thousands on tour, making millions of dollars, then you better expect that person to have some sort of an ego. That is the career/lifestyle people dream of. Just make good music. As long as you still make good music, thats all that should matter.

Now if your a band like nickelback, where your rich, sell your music to any company you can get your hands on, your concerts are more of a staged act than a rock show, and your music is horrendous, then you're a sellout.

  • just a quick note on the post above - it is quite possible to hate U2 for reasons aside from the alleged selling out...
I don't mean to offend anyone, a lot of what I say should be taken with a grain of salt... that said for most of you I'm a stranger on a computer on the other side of the world, don't give me that sort of power!

Yes the music can be good but I won't feel any connection to a band with a big ego.
@ 12345AGNST1.....no I would not like that, I'd be more a Kurt Cobain type, hate people following me and hanging around me, P-R-I-V-A-C-Y it's priceless to me.
