I like Tattoo, but I have to agree that it is by far the weakest song on the album. You and Your Blues - Wow!! As Is - sounds like nothing they have done before. China Town is some really heavy shit. The whole album is pretty surprising.
Amazing album. I can't see another hard rock album coming close to this in 2012. This album is just surreal. I don't know how they could put out something so hard rocking and catchy with Dave after 28 years apart. Not to mention they are all almost 60 years old. Anyone who dismisses this album just hasn't heard it or is doing so to be contrarian. This is what hard rock is all about, folks.

Yep, this album is just amazing. It seriously blew me away, while I was anticipating this album for awhile I was expecting an uninspired cheesy old fart type record, but this is among the best albums Van Halen have ever released and one of the best rock albums to come out so far this decade. Probably the best comeback album ever made. To me this raises the stakes for veteran bands. "As Is" is a fucking beast of a song, could be my favorite Van Halen song ever. I hope when I see VH in June they play the whole damn album front to back.
I know there may not be many of us, but if you're on Long Island WBAB is doing Van Halen day. Sprinkling in the new album all day (and playing it in its entirety at 7 tonight) with all the old stuff (I wonder if Eddie has officially banished the Sammy songs and insisted nobody ever play them again. I've been listening for 2 hours, and haven't heard a single one ). Haven't heard anything about giving away tickets, so I'm guessing they don't have any, but who knows?
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.
I'm pretty far from a VH fan and decided to check this album out to maybe get a laugh at the geezers trying to rock.
It's a fantastic album. I was blown away. people should really give it a chance
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

I have now heard Jump 4 times today because they refuse to play Sammy tunes.... (And I've been in and out of my office all day). I wonder if that will happen in concert... And now for the encore... Our 3rd time playing Panama tonight!!!!!!
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.
This album is a real surprise, I was hoping it would be good but my expectations were low. After living with it for a few days, it really is good, bordering on great. EVH's guitar playing is stellar on every song and Al is in great form. There really is no sound like the Van Halen brothers (now with a 3rd VH in the mix) locking into a groove. Dave gives a good performance even though his range is shot.
Having thought EVH was gone forever (saw them in 2004 and he was horrible and 2007 where he was better but a shadow of himself) it is nice to see him return to the top of his game. He truly is on fire on this album and I'm looking forward to the tour.
I have been skeptical for a long time as to how an album would sound if these guys ever got back together.
Since they announced the album I have been cautiously optimistic. Tattoo grew on me, rather quickly actually.
I popped in the CD the other day and WOW. This album is friggin good! I am definitely pleasantly surprised. It is a musical assault on the senses.
The only real negative thought that comes to mind is....what a waste of 28 years.

It's a good, solid album, but nothing earth shattering and certainly did not break any new ground. If this is what they would have put out for the last 28 years, we would have had 12 albums that sound very similar. Don't get me wrong - I think it's a solid effort that most bands would kill for. But, they obviously have not been together, and Eddie decided not to allow any evolution of his sound (i.e. reverting entirely rather than nuancing what he's "learned").
If they put out another effort like this in 2 years, most VH fans (myself included) will be wondering where their creativity went. But, because it was almost 30 years between this and the last, we are glad to have it. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.....
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.
Afer a couple listens I can say it's about what I expected. Glad to see Eddie still brings it! Also watched the 3 song DVD that came with the deluxe edition. DLR is still a pretty corny guy and they do miss Michael Anthony's high pitched background vocals more than I would have thought. It'll be nice to see them here in May.
"Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience." Mark Twain
I have been listening to the album constantly since I got it last week. Far exceeded my expectations...only a few more weeks and I'll get to see EVH rip through some of these new songs.

Not my cup of tea. Glam metal never was.
Clearly, if you think VH falls into that category.
If you like good basic hard rock, it's a really good album. For me, it's got some repeat listens which isn't usually the case for me with this style.
Great comeback, but I can't think of a many bands that have put out a better post-prime album?

Just announced a show here in Reading, PA on March 26 (apparently to replace the cancelled show at Penn State).
I am on the fence whether to go or not, tickets are pricy - $60 is the cheapest, can't beat having the show 5 minutes from home though.
VH was one of my first bands, I remember getting their first album when it was just about new after hearing them on the radio (I thought Dave was a black guy)

Go. You won't regret it.
I just couldn't do it. Had the tickets in the cart. Just couldn't see spending $140 on a pair. The arena holds about 7,000, I went for the cheapest seats, which are still great since it is a small arena, but still could just not do it. Oh well.
The new album is amazing. Definitely in the top 3 or 4 best VH albums ever. 13 songs, ranging from good to amazing. For them to come back after all these years and put out an album like this is pretty incredible. Anyone gets the chance to go see them, go. The show will be great and any chance to see a legend like EVH shouldnt be missed.
This album has some cool Eddie riffs but it's far from a great album...lyrics are shallow and diamond Dave sounds like a old wailing junk yard dog.......people embracing this album are embracing a memory of yesteryear and it speaks to how desperate we all are for a good rock album".........music is in a sad state

:? or they actually think it's a good album. I have no big personal tie to any VH music. I like some of their tunes, but I'm far from a big fan and I think this album is pretty good. Your critiques on Roth have always rang true. There's plenty of music, old and new, to sate my appetite for new(to me) sounds, so there's no desperation here.

They were influential on the 80's glam metal movement, but I'd hardly characterize Van Halen as glam metal.

Saw them tonight in Detroit and they killed it, playing for a solid 2 hrs.....still warming up to the new material but it translated well live.....if anything, Eddie is a master, absolutely on fire the entire night ("Unchained" and "Hot for Teacher" stole the show for me, as well as Ed's extended rendition of "Eruption")...check them out if you get a chance, they even got Kool and the Gang opening up :? Kind of an odd combination, but it worked, and hundreds of drunken cougars up and dancing couldn't be wrong, could they?

I'm glad to hear that it's translating well. I've been a bit worried about Dave's voice and how rough it's going to sound later on next month when I get to see them. They can do a lot of magic in the studio, but live is going to make it or break it.

I must admit to some humble pie here.....gave it an honest listen and this is a legitimately solid record.... Way better after the third listen...Eddie is amazing

yup. All the tracks range from at least good to really good. You and Your Blues in particular sounds like a classic already.
