Stop by my shop, we have all the Doors, TAN label, and speaking of Hendrix, are your Reprise W7/R Reprise or just R. Also, Hendrix was on Trip (Rare Hendrix), Barclay (French Import of Loose Ends), Shout (In the Beginning), Ember (Uk Import of Experience), GRT (The Rubber Band), Springboard, and a few others I have around the shop. I won't even get into Band Of Gypsys.....too many imports. My shop is  I don't advertise on this board, I just try and keep the peace and try to help folks out, but needless to say, I own a shop. I don't want to sell to 10C members, because being Buddhist, I am more likely to just give the stuff away. Remember, it's just stuff.

  • So, for today's meditation, lets just focus on simple kindness: Todays meditation is titled "JUST BE KIND". Kindness enables you to put your awareness into action by giving something of yourself. People do not always ask for what they need in words, so your kindness will involve understanding and relating to others from your heart. Just simple acts of kindness can change peoples lives.

Anyone with a turntable issue??? Warped Vinyl Issues....Anything to keep me from away from the customers.

You have more than helped me! I will look at those speakers as you suggested. I just have to take the back off once again. Did you happen to see the pics I posted of the console?

I just bought 4 albums off of some guy on craigslist. I believe they are original pressings of The Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" " Hey Jude" any way to tell? The jackets are not in the best of conditions. I also got "The Concert for Bangladesh". Any ideas on how to tell their date? Thanks

  • Ok, Beatles LPs are not that hard, but the Matrix does not come even close to telling all. The label itself tells the tale along with the cover. An example is Hey Jude, which was A.) mislabeled a number of times, it has 2 different titles, it had 2 different song endings (Her Majesty or The End) depending on the pressing, blah blah blah. If you want all the answers and really get into buying LPs/selling LPs, get the Goldmine Standard Value of Records, 7th edition. It is over 1300 pages of vinyl records that covers the 50s thru the 90s and will tell all. It is the industry standard for valuing/grading/collecting records. The Beatles have a very "complex" pressing/labeling/catalogue. Some albums were pressed but mislabeled, most are on Apple AND Capitol...,just get the book, it is perfect.

This is one of the best threads and I haven't played an LP in 20 years!

One great LP memory is from high school and opening Joshua Tree and playing it through headphones in total darkness. For some reason, I don't think it would be the same if it was a CD.

Perfect! I will look into the book after the holidays! Thanks again and lets keep this thread going!
  • Ok, regarding your Beatles LPs, Lets start with the Hey Jude. It was first pressed in 1970 and was mis-titled "The Beatles Again", with a matrix of SO-385(DJ). This was not released to the general public, but they show up on occasion. I have 2. The front cover states "The Beatles Again". If you need a pic, just let me know. It values @ $8,000.00US. I doubt you have this because you mentioned Hey Jude, which were all pressed with a matrix of SW-385, most in 1970, on either Capitol or Apple, and value anywhere from $75.00US-$20.00UD, depending on the label. Even words on the outside ring of the label like "A Subsidiary of" can date a pressing and confirm its value.

Now for MMT (Magical.....), Its first pressing was 1967, and was either MAL-2835 (MONO) and will have MONO on the spine, and a red and pink "Psychedelic" sleeve and a 24 page book. MINT VALUE, $300.00US. The SMAL Version was also pressed in 67, along with 68, 69, 76, and 78. Values vary. The best way for me to give you a rough estimate is to post a PIC of JUST SIDE A of the Label. Remember, these values assume MINT condition. I also have a MINT German pressing of MMT, which is worth quite a bit and is pictured on my web site. (TOTALLY different than the ordinary MMT, or just google it, it's cool.

Regarding this thread, this is what I do all day anyway, value and sell vinyl, so if anyone wants to ask a question, just shoot it out there.

As a reminder, A.) condition, not only of the vinyl, but the jacket, and in some cases the sleeve is EVERYTHING. And B.) The easiest way for me to tell you what you have is to post a Pic of the side A label.

Sorry this took me so long, just saw the question. This is A SUPER EASY FIX. Get 2 pieces of glass about 14" by 14". I used to use old coffee table glass insert, but any FLAT glass that fits FLAT in the oven will work. Just look up glass in the phone book, and they will cut you exactly what you need, mine were $5.00. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees, NO HOTTER, NO COLDER. Trust me, I have done this a thousand times. I actually have an oven in the back room of my shop, sometimes for brownies  , and mostly for flattening vinyl. Anyway, CLEAN THE GLASS...CLEAN THE GLASS....CLEAN THE GLASS. Any dirt will become one with the vinyl. Now, place the warped LP between the two sheets of glass, and place in the preheated 200 degree oven, on the middle shelf and shut the door, and leave it shut, NO PEAKING.

LEAVE IT IN THERE, UNDISTURBED, FOR EXACTLY 12 MINUTES, NOT 11:59, AND NOT 12:01. EXACTLY 12 minutes. Now, GENTLY remove the glass/lp sandwich from the oven and place it on a PERFECTLY FLAT SURFACE. DO NOT DISTURB THE GLASS, OR SEPARATE THE GLASS UNTIL IT HAS REACHED ROOM TEMPERATURE. Now, when you place the 200 degree sandwich on the flat surface, place 3 phone books, or heavy books on top. NO MORE OR LESS THAN THREE BIG BOOKS. NO BE PATIENT AND WAIT. Go for a jog. When the glass is cool/room temp to the touch, separate the pieces, gently slide your prized LP off the glass, and SPIN SPIN SPIN THE BLACK CIRCLE. Thats it. EASY CHEESY.

Ow, and "The Concert for Bangladesh" 3 LP set usually goes for between $20-$30, depending on the condition.

    google the catalog number
  • If you google the catalogue number for, say Hey Jude, which is SW-385, it won't tell you what pressing it is, it will just tell you the album name. Especially with The Beatles/The Who/The Doors/The Stones, who all had multiple pressings of the same album, value can only be determined by the label AND the matrix AND the jacket AND, in some cases, the sleeve. Google will not give you an accurate answer. Hi-Fi

  • So here is my Festivus story. The wife and I, both being Buddhist, celebrate Festivus, which is tomorrow. We also celebrate whatever holidays we like, so, really, every day is a holiday. But now to the Fd up part....

I had to move my shop to a "less savory" part of town because the economy sucks and I did not want to fire anyone, so we moved. And last night, I was the last to leave the shop, and was going to buy my wife a Festivus gift, when i was robbed, AT GUNPOINT!!!!! I told the guy he can have the money and all the rest, but he took everything, including the thing I cared about the most, my PJ20 Patagonia Refugio bag, which was a gift from my wife  I'm not sure what this world has come to. That just plain rots.

I guess that will be our meditation for the day, on possessions....or lack there of.....and that Hi-Fidelity is still here to answer all your vinyl needs questions, but to take a gift from my wife is LOW....

Sorry, just had to vent, I am still a bit shocked, thats why I am a little late answering today's questions :( Sorry

Well, your MMT values MINT @ $60.00, but obvious spindle wear on the label, blah blah blah, WELL WORTH 5 onesies! It is a second, 68 Capitol Pressing. Does it have the 24 page book? If not, I have extras and will send you one.

What is the last song listed on the B side of Hey Jude, is it The End or Her Majesty?

Ok Hi Fi since you asked :D

I'm looking to acquire a turntable probably in the next few months. Never had a turntable before and I don't have a lot of space or a souped up sound system, just the sound bar that came with my new TV which has OK sound.

I want something decent but not too pricey, and it also needs to be aesthetically pleasing. I came across this at CB2 (yes, I know, they sell furniture, but it's red!!): http://www.cb2.com/electronics/accessor ... ion=search

Question 1: Would this be suitable for my needs, or will I just get laughed off this forum for good if I get that?

Question 2: I haven't been paying much attention to this threads but I know you're bored so maybe you won't mind re-answering.. I thought I wanted something that can convert to MP3 but it seems not all of them do this. Is there a disadvantage to having a turntable that also converts to MP3?

Hope this keeps you entertained for awhile (and I really did mean to ask, I just have been low on funds so I'm probably not going to purchase for awhile but always good to do research).

    Thank you :mrgreen::mrgreen:

Dearest Mr. Green Jeans, You will need to pre-amp that deck, although it says it has one. Ultimately, you will need A.) Powered speakers, or B.) a pre-amp (I run a BBE FJB-200X) between the deck and any unpowered speakers to get any sound. I have a serialized set of Bose 301 Series 2 from the late 70s that I rehabbed and sound awesome. Only newer model decks will convert to MP3, but they are not as concerned with the sound output as much as they are the MP3 quality sound. Give me a day (Yes, I will be in the shop on Saturday, my wife is working) and I will compile you a list of 3 or 4 god decks at a good price (not from my shop) Cool? Off to the Festivus celebration. • Merry Christmas from High Fidelity!!!!! As some of you know from the vinyl help thread, I own a vinyl shop and am Buddhist, but in the spirit of keeping the wifey happy, Tiffanys it was. NOT THE GIRL SINGER, the store. And I scored a signed copy of Mumford and Sons Sigh No More, obviously on vinyl. We saw them at a club show in Philly. Two of them had come into my Vinyl shop (not in Philly) and we hit it off. COOL DUDES. The next morning, 2 front row tickets to the Philly show were under the shops door, with a hand written note and backstage passes, Well, I bought the vinyl at the show, and we went backstage after the show, and me not wanting to bother, I kept my distance and just kinda hung out. Well the wifey disappeared for a bit, which is odd, because SHE IS NOT BRAVE. She came back smiling, so I could only assume she was being sneaky, but I had no idea. Anywho, Marcus and Winston saw me a bit later, and we had a hell of as time of it. Enough said. Kindest Regards and Rahng Dbang Bod
