We totally rock! I spent 2 weeks in Heleiwa and probably saw lots of folks but only remember the beautiful turtles, rainbows, and whales jumping out of the ocean. Oh, and Kelly Slater's half naked body. Oh, and THE 2 BEST SHOWS OF THE YEAR!!!!! Did anyone mention that the radio station in HI was playing PJ's Hawaii '78 from Blaisdell every hour on the hour?Congrats Andy!

Nevermind. I just found it. I do tend to be blind sometimes, when I have some good wine in the evening. Kind of like Ed drinking wine and forget the words to Immortality."Underneath this smile lies everything - all my hopes, anger, pride and shame."0 -

and one more thing to add...i was having brunch friday morning in haleiwa, at the haleiwa cafe and saw daryl hannah eating there with some friends. she was later joined by STONE! i guess they're friends, because of the environmental groups they support or something...couldn't say anything though, and didn't want to interrupt his brunch...we just went outside and then called everyone we knew in true non-tacky pearl jam fan fashion.

I had so much to say about this trip, that I just couldn't sit down and type it all out. But I saw your post & got motivated to write a few things down...
Because I was there too!! - sitting with my husband in the booth directly in front of them! I had my back to the door & my husband looks past my shoulder and said "Oh my god - Stone just walked in!". I tried to casually glance behind me & saw Stone slide into the booth. Was there a girl in your party wearing the brown PJ surf shirt? I was facing your table & could tell you guys knew what was up and later saw you in the back parking lot making calls when I went out back to hit the bathroom. We didn't bother him either since he was with people & it didn't seem appropriate.
Was that really Darryl Hannah? I saw her before we were seated over at the Deep Ecology shop next door, and saw the resemblance, but thought she looked kind of haggard. Didn't occur to me it was actually her. I'm pretty sure Stone's wife was part of the group he joined, but had no idea who the rest were. And not that I was trying to eavesdrop or anything, but I believe there was talk about scuba diving and pets. Whose dog is named Taco? 'Cause I'm pretty sure that name came up in the pet stories.
We also saw Eddie twice on the beach in Waikiki. The first time was the morning of their solo show - he came out of the water carrying a surfboard. I was in such shock to see him right out there in public, that I just watched him walk right past us with this idiotic grin on my face. He saw us looking over & grinned back. But he was there with his daughter, so I didn't feel right trying to talk to him. A little later though, my husband had the opportunity to tell him that we were there on our honeymoon & how he had a friend play Smile for me at our wedding in lieu of the wedding march, and asked if they'd play it that night. So it was a pretty huge deal for us when they played it.
The next time we saw him was Monday morning & I gave him a little pin that I got the night before when we saw a Hawaiian ukulele player, Jake Shimabukuro play at the Waimea Audubon Center. It said "peace, love & ukulele". Ed recognized the name and called Jake a "monster" on the uke. We thanked him for playing Smile and he shook our hands and said it was a fun show. He was running back to his hotel room, so we just left it at that, but we were amazed at how cool and friendly he was.
And then just a few minutes later, I was sitting on the beach by myself while my husband was looking into renting a surfboard, and Ed walks right past me carrying his surfboard. He looked over at me as he walked past and said "Enjoy the rest of your stay!"
I never actually believed I would see any of these guys outside of a concert, so it blew my mind to have them pop up like they did.
I too called everyone I knew - especially after meeting Ed!
Just another interesting thing - during our week there, we met employees from a couple different surf shops, all who have met Ed in their stores. They all had such great things to say about what a nice guy he is. One girl even told us about being on the North Shore one night and hearing Ed and Jack Johnson playing together out on the beach. Can you imagine?
Best trip ever!no time to be void or save up on life
you've got to spend it all.0 -
i was expecting a largerset set-list from Pearl jam but the song with bno was great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!its not a bad time to be me; something made me realise it was time to get away from there or i was going to be just another loser!0

December 8.
Arrived back in Honolulu after 3 great days on Kauai.
Kauai is beautiful and has a way slower pace then Oahu. While we were there we met two fellow Pearl Jam Fans Adam and Dave. You guys are awesome! I highly recommend visiting the Garden Island.
Our plan was to be in-line early on December 9 so we needed to get some stuff for the long day in line. We found a Wal-Mart and bought Lawn Chairs, Cooler, Water, and Chips. On our way to our Hotel we passed the Stadium to get a lay of the land and to figure out where we needed to park and to see how may people were in line. we were told there was about 600 people already in line and this was around 10:00pm. So we knew we had to be there early, because we did not want to sleep in the parking lot.
December 9.
Woke up at 5:00am got ready and headed to the stadium and were in line exactly at 6:00am. We were right near the front of General Admission Pen 3.
Again we met some awesome people from Florida, Chicago, and New York all of who were U2 fans, but they were really cool. They were actually asking me tons of questions about Pearl Jam as none of them had seen the guys before, so I was more than happy to answer.
After waiting and waiting in the baking sun it was soon evident it would be a survival test, but we managed to keep busy and hydrated.
Around 1 or 2 pm we heard Rocko and PJ doing some sound checking so we knew we were getting closer.
Rocko actually was walking around the parking lot with some of his family and so people were running up and talking to him and he was really nice. While I was nearby he was talking to somebody and said "Pearl Jam is Awesome".
3:30pm we start getting lined up to go in and we get in by about 4:30pm and are really excited to be up in the inner General Admission (Ellipse Area), so we try get as close we can to the front which ends up being about 4th row on Stone's side. In all the shows I have been too this is the closest I have been.
Again everyone was cool, just chilling, not much pushing or jockeying for position going on. We able to get out and back to go to the washroom(restroom) and grab a poster and T-shirt.
6:30pm and Rocko comes out and puts on a half hour set which I thought was decent. They were basically a bar band playing a stadium. I kept thinking that if Pearl jam was headlining how Eddie would have done a pre-set just to help get people in their seats, because outside of the general admission area the stadium was pretty empty.
7:30pm and the familiar PJ Intro starts and from where I was standing I could tell they mean business. Interstellar Overdrive into Corduroy just tore it up. It felt like volume wise they were turned down slightly but that may be typical for opening bands.
This was followed by Life Wasted, Do The Evolution, Elderly Small Town, Big Wave, and Even Flow which was awesome Mike was dong the solo behind his head and was basically an ANIMAL ALL NIGHT!!!!
Hawaii 78 was played again and this time around I knew what it was and it was beautiful with the locals giving the loudest cheers and from where I was standing I could see Boom clearly and he was crying the whole song. I will say however that the Dec 2 version was better.
Better Man was next and I think had the loudest crowd reaction as I know more than one U2 fan was hopeful to hear this song.
World Wide Suicide, Given To Fly, Crazy Mary with Boom introduction, Alive which was the best song of then night, and then Baba O'Riley closed out the set at exactly one hour.
I wasn't surprised at the one hour length as that was what I expected, I was however surprised that they did not play RITFW with U2 joining them considering I heard that it had been sound checked the night before. However during the change over from PJ to U2 gear I saw Mike's tech hand Edge's tech one of Mike's guitars and I could make out the faint notes of RITFW being sound checked so then I figured that it would be played during the U2 set.
More than a few people near us commented at how good PJ was and how awesome Eddie is as a front man.
The U2 set started out great and I enjoyed the show, however at times as people have eluded to it seemed too scripted. One thing I absolutely love about Pearl Jam is how genuine and unscripted every show feels.
After Billie Joe joined U2 for the Saints are Marching we all started chanting Eddie's name and he and Mike came out for RITFW. As soon as it started I could tell it was slower than what we are used to but with Larry on drums and Adam on bass I guess that should have been expected. By the end of the song however Eddie was jumping around and doing the things he normally does and I think he restored some needed energy back to the stage and added the improv line of "I love the Edge" to Bono's "I don't know how to end" near the the finish of the song. Ed didn't miss a beat.
'All I want is you' ended the show.
It was a great day and a fantastic experience.
Between the Dec 2 and Dec 9 show and all that I saw and experienced in Hawaii it was truly the best vacation I have been on. I loved every minute of it.
Mahalo. See you all at the next show!

When we bought the tickets, he was the Pearl Jam fan and I was the U2 fanatic. By the time we got to Hawaii, after spending months listening to the boots, I had been converted. Their set was too short! U2 was too choreographed! Uwho?
Anyway, I have just a few photos in a flickr set of the show and they're mostly of U2, however, there are a couple of decent shots of RITFW, which was the best part of the show.*

*Actually, the best part of the show was standing in line and hearing the sound check with Jen and Scott. I am strange like that. It's possible I've died and this is heaven.0 -
hey yeah, the girl in the brown shirt was me! funny, i feel like we must've been really loud in the parking lot out back.
and yeah i was pretty sure that was darryl hannah. i recognized her when she walked in past our table. she did look old...amazing what makeup can do. but she looked healthy and all...i think taco is stone's dog?
that's great you got to meet ed!tastes_like_burning wrote:I had so much to say about this trip, that I just couldn't sit down and type it all out. But I saw your post & got motivated to write a few things down...

here's what I caught on cam of the 'I love the Edge' moment.
A highlight of the night as it really showed the friendship between the two bands.

In response to Bonowall's posts, I don't see how you can say it was the same show they did in NJ, I went to both shows and both were on the Vertigo tour so they will be play many of the same songs, they do mix it up.
The guy they pulled up for Who's gonna ride your wild horses was not staged he had a sign asking to play piano to that song, because it is one of a few that he actually knows how to play.
Every fan I met U2 and Pearl Jam fans, were awesome, kind generous and friendly. Sorry you had a bad experience. Just wondering if you went to the show 12-2-06 because it sounds like making such a trip and being such a big fan, it would have made sense to go to both shows.
I agree the set was too short and this was my first time seeing Pearl Jam ( I have only seen Eddie perform once on VFC in NJ as a guest and loved it) I was definatley left wanting more in Hawaii and wished they had a longer set.
As far as Rocko and the Devils set, I really enjoyed it and thought they did a great job.
I thought overall the show was great, yes we all have our preferences and I thought there would be more of an Hawaiin theme but even after waiting nearly a year to see this show, it was amazing. Highlights were Hawaii 78 and RIFW just awesome. Eddie was great and of course, meeting him on the Thurs before the show was the highlight of my trip!0 -
I was absolutely in heaven at the concert. I remember the wind softly blowing, the warm breeze as the music was coming from stage......I LOVED both groups. I am an absolute PJ fan but U2 had the stands rocking as well. I cannot say that I have eve been to such as show and don't know if I will be again. I'm from Canada and we don't get those kind of shows here. So, to all those who did or didn't like it....I have my own memories, I love listening to Eddie....and there is a shop on Front Street where Eddie has visisted a couple of times to buy art. It is a cool place to visit....Celebrities.....Aloha!!!0

LukinTimer wrote:Just got back from Hawaii this morning. What an amazing weekend. I don't even know where to start.
Standing in line Saturday was like a visit to the UN. 1Vedhead (aka Lori) and I were in "Holding Pen #3" with people from Germany, England, Slovenia (26 hour flight to Hawaii, in Hawaii for 24 hours, 26 hours home! Yikes!), Spain, Italy... and that was just near us. Fortunately, we were lucky enough to be right next to 5-6 other people who were really there for Pearl Jam. A great couple from Anaheim, the guy with the 10c number in the 30,000's who shared some fun stories, the tall guy with the... eh, other guy. Sorry I don't know your names, but you made the long wait (got there at 7am, gates opened at 4pm) so much easier.
As for the show itself, I agree with most other PJ fans here - the set was far too short for me... but what they did was incendiary!!
Lori and I were on the field in the inner section (near BonoWall for U2), not too far from the stage. As Eddie and the boys ripped into Courdory right off the top, you could easily spot the other PJ peeps going nuts. Many of the U2 fans weren't sure what to think, but it didn't take long for the band to win them over. The boys were clearly having a blast on stage. At one point, Ed lowered his head into Jeff's chest and kind of head-butted him. And they really won over the hometown crowd with Hawaii '78... I could hear the whole stadium singing. After they literally ROCKED the house (the entire stadium came alive) with Baba O'Riley to close, the guy in the U2 t-shirt next to me turned and said "HOLLY F**K THAT WAS SO AMAZING, I JUST FORGOT WHO I CAME HERE TO SEE!" During the break before U2, people were just buzzing. I do believe they won themselves some brand new fans!
The U2 show was great, I have always loved their stuff and enjoyed their shows, but seeing both bands back-to-back really did emphasize their differences. PJ's shows have a raw, organic energy that I simply cannot resist. You never know what is going to happen next. It could be anything! By comparison, U2 is a well oiled machine with a polished show that can, at times, border on performance art. It's not bad, I am definitely NOT a U2 hater... I love their stuff, it just doesn't grab a hold of me the way PJ does. But it was an excellent U2 set.
During their last encore when Bono said "who can we find back there..." the crowd around us started chanting, Eddie, Eddie, Eddie. Clearly high on the night, Ed and Mike joined them on stage for a slammin version of "Rockin' in the Free World" and really brought some great energy out on stage. Ed bounced around and did a little dance with Bono. It was so much fun to see them all just jammin' and having a blast. At the end, Bono said, I don't know how to end this... and Ed said "how about this - "We love The Edge, We love The Edge" so they all chanted that (The Edge looked bemused) for a while before wrapping RITFW up.
The concert was amazing, but what made it even better was Hawaii, all the great PJ fans, the great U2 fans we met, drinks at Duke's and even better, SURFING WITH EDDIE VEDDER AND MIKE McCREADY!
On Thursday, Lori was very patiently teaching me how to surf on Waikiki, when we spotted Ed riding a wave. After some subtle maneuvering, we found ourselves sitting on our boards, waiting for a wave with him. He was very cool and actually struck up a brief conversation with us that went a little something like this: 1Vedhead, "Don't worry we'll get you up on a wave," me "Dude, I have saltwater in EVERY crevice of my head," to which Ed responded laughing "Yeah, just wait until dinner. At about 6 o'clock it will all come out right into your spaghetti, " we laughed and said "sounds delightful." Yep.... stuff to write home about.
It was followed by a little small talk, before he and Lori paddled out to catch a wave coming through. Unbelievable. While catching a wave really wasn't in my repertoire... I did have the pleasure of wiping out on one, only to look over and see Mike McCready taking a dive right next to me. Awesome. I just couldn't believe it. As if the morning hadn't been friggin' amazing already. Ed was teaching Mike to surf and at one point Mike yelled "man, you're such a show off, just riding wave after wave." Then Ed sent his board in, and just stood in the water, helping Mike get his surf on. I still can't really believe it. I was in a bit of a daze the entire time.
Other than that it was just fun in the sun, driving up the coast to check out beautiful Hawaii, sitting with Mai Tai's in hand at Duke's with Chris (who also has some kick ass stories), Monica (so does she!) and so many other great Pearl Jam fans. All you guys are the best!! We will always be able to say "WE WERE THERE!!!"
Please forgive me for rambling, the typos, and the over usage of certain adjectives and adverbs - I've had about 6 hours sleep in 3-days.
Of course, it was worth it, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. -- Sam
By the way, Random House will be releasing this in paperback soon.

Hawaii (and New Zealand and Australia and Japan) had not had their Vertigo fix because of the tour being postponed. For the masses, that was their first show. And you think they're going to change their program just because you've seen it 3 times already when some haven't even seen it once?
If you make it your business to see the same band that puts on a production the scale and the sheer magnitude of the likes of U2's show, are you really surprised that you saw the same thing? Really? It's a production. It's a production with a message. That's their gig and that was their show.
I imagine that those who were seeing it for the first time (and even those that were seeing it for the fourth) enjoyed themselves enough for those who didn't.
