    Setlist (somewhat out of order)

Set 1: Walking the Cow, Around the Bend, I Am Mine, Dead Man, I'm Open, Man of the Hour, No Ceiling, Guaranteed, Millworker, Far Behind, Rise (w/Dirty Frank tease), Soon Forget, Broken Heart, You're True, Driftin', Hide Your Love Away, Picture in a Frame, Masters of War, Trouble, I Won't Back Down, Porch (may have missed 1 or 2)

Encore 1: Society (w/Liam), Throw Your Arms Around Me (w/Liam), Lukin, Arc

Encore 2: No More, I Am a Patriot, So You Wanna Be a Rock and Roll Star, Hard Sun (w/Liam and EJ Barnes)

Okay, so the show kicked ass. Eddie was super funny. But first, here's the cool part: 10C screwed up some of the seats, and put my girlfriend and I in separate rows (she was right in front of me). Well, we politely complained (I tried being very nice, as normally I don't make a big deal about these things) and THEY PUT US IN THE FRONT ROW!!!!!! It was crazy. But back to the show . . . a weird Johnny Cash-ish version of Elderly Woman started off the show as intro music, and Ed came out very hungover. He was also extremely political tonight, and made a funny comment something to the effect of "If me being hungover means I fuck up a lot, none of you get your money back . . .in fact, I will keep it all and use it for rehab. Also, if any of you are Republicans and want your money back, you don't get it either. I will keep it and hopefully use it to contribute to the demise of future Republicans."

Before Rise, somebody shouted "Dirty Frank!" Ed responded, "Yeah, Dirty Frank on a mandolin" and played a few bars. "That's what we call a shitty suggestion. But thank you for letting me make fun of you, prick." It was quite funny. Add to that a Barry White impression with a preset on the looping machine, and all the great music, and you have a wonderful 2 hr 15 minute show. Liam kicked ass also. Can't wait until tomorrow night.

barry white and the "like i give a shit" line. classic.

    edit:

Somebody shouted out "Fuck the Oscars" after Guaranteed. Eddie ignored him, and then laughingly added "Like I give a Shit" ......and he meant it.
  • can't go to sleep yet....posted this in the other thread............

just returned to the hotel and trying really hard to not let the unemotional tools in the first two rows damper my spirit.

I was in the second row/center with my husband and I felt like the only EV fan and when Eddie played Lukin, I watched the confused faces around me and knew that I was the lonely Pearl Jam fan. Further, there was a couple sitting to the left of me that kept making out and it took all my restraint not to punch them in the face.....

anyway...vent over. .. trust me.. I could go on...

..okay.. chilling with a glass of wine, thinking positive thoughts..... I was beyond happy to sing along with I am a Patriot...and be so very physically close to Eddie tonight. all in all, it was a great night.

I was 2nd row left section and saw that making out couple too. Kinda gross even from 30 feet away. Don't feel too lonely, I was rockin to Lukin to. First row on our side was into it all night. Crowd did a great job with the sing alongs especially I Won't Back Down.

I saw 'happy laid back surfer Ed' in Santa Cruz and 'activist Ed' the first night in Berkeley, then it was definitely 'edgy, grunge Ed' I saw tonight.

Maybe it's because I was so close to the speakers, but I thought the sound system wasn't very good, sort of unbalanced. He seemed to be frustrated by that a couple times. Had a false start on No Ceiling and said "This is a beautiful theater here...good for climbing (nodding towards the balcony).. but the sound is shite.

So many great moments. I thought my ultimate dream was fulfilled when he did Soon Forget, Masters of War and Patriot. THEN he did his soul dancing and the Barry White "lick you like a an ice cream cone" segment and THEN mentioned being in bed after the show trying to fall asleep and being lonely. Won't be forgetting THAT anytime soon. Good times.

After being at SB, LA1, and LA2, tonight was definitely good, but not life-changing. No guests, decent song choices, but the worst part...

...the crowd was LAME! After the boisterous rowdiness that was both LA shows, this San Diego crowd was practically mute, like they didn't even want Eddie to be there! No joke, the most riled up the crowd got was when someone shouted "Go Yankees!!!". It was literally the loudest the place got the entire night. NO ONE stood up for Porch!

The good part was that the venue was TINY. Seemed like literally 1/2 the size of the Wiltern in LA.

Nice to hear some song debuts not played prior on this tour (I Am A Patriot, So You Wanna Be A Rock N' Roll Star).
  • Man I am bummed to hear about how lame these crowds, or at least individuals, have been. I'm glad Ed spoke against them a couple of times. I know this had to give him a sour taste of the whole thing. I know he was hoping/expecting great crowds that were respectful and enthused, but one or two people had to be that burr undler his saddle each night. I feel for Ed and the rest of the fans.

Overall though, congrats to all those who got to see this, you have stories to tell.
  • PLEASE!!!!! Someone go into more detail about Barry White, ice cream and being lonely...... PLEASE!!!!!

can tell I wasn't there then :p..and guess Sam didn't make it after all either..

Seating is lame and we were forced to seat (by Ed .. certainly did in LA1 when people stood up as he came on stage and looked like they might stay up and he told us to seat).

    Here's the Barry White story:

Ed started talking about his electronics on stage (like the loop machine for arc). He explained they come pre-programmed with back-up music, like drum or background tracks and such. At some point, he stumbled across one track which he described as vile, offensive, etc. "But then it starts growing on you." So they decided he should play it at one show.

He lit a cigarette and the lights turned down low. Then he kicked on the machine and this background track started. Tough to describe.... Barry White-esque. Imagine a perfect cross between classic 70's porn music and 80's elevator music. Everyone started laughing. Ed danced a little.

Then he sat down and started doing spoken word on top of the track in a very deep throaty voice:

    Hey

    Hey Baby

    I want to lick you

I want to lick you all over like an ice cream cone

I want to kiss you and lick you....

Is that a rope by the bed? Are we getting freaky tonight, baby?

Why are you making a noose baby?

I didn't know you could make a noose baby.

Are you going to kill yourself baby?

Are you going to kill me baby?

Something to that effect. He danced around on the stool a little bit more. The crowd loved it. It was EASILY the funniest thing I have ever seen at a PJ show, and probably any show ever.

Other might have more info on the words.

SETLIST addition: there was a "gremmie out of control" tease in there somewhere.

Masters of war was incredible, absolutely incredible.

Wow, that is hilarious. The funniest thing in my shows was the "Limit Yourself" song he did in LAI. I was laughing hard.

Umm, let's see, I think it was right after the 'Barry White experiment'. Bearing in mind I was pretty stunned from seeing this newly revealed side of Mr. V, my best recollection:

"You know tonight when I'm back at the hotel laying bed in tonight unable to get to sleep at 4:40a, well.....you know that's the part that will be going through my head and I'll be lonely"

Someone else correct me if I'm way off with that.

Somewhere in there he referenced "calling Lindsey" which was another story.
He was up very late the night before at the home of PJ's former tour manager Eric Johnson. Ed picked a book from the shelf by Raymond Carver. He opened it and read a handwritten note on the inside cover "To Eddie Vedder, from Lindsey Sandoval Aspen, CO and a phone number." Big laugh from the crowd, then Ed explained Eric obviously picked it up after it had been thrown onto the stage many years ago and kept it all this time. "So", he said, "We called her up. It was like 2:30a here, that makes it 4:30a there, we figured she probably gets up early. So it rang but there no answer. There was a P.S. under the note 'My brother Greg really wants to talk to you about the book too (909) 555-1234.' So we called him...."

He mentioned calling Lindsey during his 'late night and lonely' comment because he said 4:30am and that would be the *right* time of day to try her number again. It was funny, trust me.

edit: All of this was said smiling and jokey, not nearly as lascivious in person as my recap. The suggestiveness comes mainly from my own mind probably. ; )

The crowd was certainly more laid back than the frantic energy of LA1. That combined with Ed's apology right off the bat of being _extremely_ hungover and the screaming _really_ hurts his head kinda set the stage for a more introspective show.
Luckily the hangover didn't hinder his playing/singing, so the show we got was a-ok.

I loved the Elderly Woman intro. It was some version sung by a Kermit-the-frog sounding person. The volume increased and Ed came out. The crowd started the sing-along and we got a real nice "Hello!" and Ed joined in to finish the song up. Great start to the show!

The theater is absolutely stunning! Make sure and soak it all in. Awesome sculptures and ornate trim throughout.

Given the good mix of tunes played that was not played at LA1, I'm pretty ok with missing tonight. But I'm sure it will be an incredible show and Ed will bring out some good surprises for the final show of the tour.

The show was everything you could have wanted in such a small place. eddie was very open and it felt as if you were in their seattle practice space. the sound was good, but the wiltern was much better..nonetheless, you had a much more intimate feel, as i was row 8.

No one has mentioned the bus driver story. Eddie mentioned back in 1992/1993 they were playing a show in Tijuana, and Eddie said he forgot something in their tour bus parked ten minutes across the border in a Dennys parking lot. Him and Eric Johnson(the one who stole lindsey's book) tried to flag down a taxi and had a difficult time explaining how to go north and what direction. Finally they got the taxi driver to make it across the border. They asked him "Do you know Dennys??" and he kept saying.."No se Denise" "No...DENNYS.." "No se Denise" They pull up to the touring bus and the taxi driver says "This is YOUR bus????" Obviously surprised that a long haired grunge guy would have such luxury. Eddie replied "Yeah I guess it is mine." Then the taxi driver said "You have all the accumens?" in perfect english. Eddie was dumbfounded. Then the taxi driver said, "It has always been my dream to someday drive a bus like this. My whole life I have this one dream." Eddie then says.."His name is Javier, we brought him back, trained him, and he has been our bus driver for 15 years" Everyone cheers at an obviously great story. Then eddie sheepishly says.."Its all true, every word, except hiring him and him being our driver for the last 15 years....but I felt the story needed an ending"...and Ed stated that he thinks about Javier alot..pretty funny story.

Eddie also said he hoped the ghosts of the soldiers killed in Iraq and Iraqi civilians haunt dick cheney, bush, and their administration..

As usual there were some yayhoos yelling stupid stuff..dirty frank ..ed did a snippit on the madolin and put the cat caller in his place...
people if you are going to yell out for a song(which you shouldn't cause ed isn't taking requests..try for "Long Nights or Kids Are Alright" something he has done before....at least
someone yelled out for gremmie out of control and ed played a snippet as well..funniest shout out was "jessie's girl" ed said that even if he knew it he wouldn't play it and make everyone lose respect for him..he played a few chords..and you knew he could figure it out if he wanted to. before "i'm open" ed strummed a few chords and someone yelled out "here comes the sun" ..do they realize ed has his own material..not just covers..??

millworker was great..would like to hear a bootleg copy ..singing from the crowd was good on i won't back down

arc was amazing again..especially in these small venues.

liam finn is a great drummer..wouldn't mind him taking over if matt took time of for a soundgarden reuinion stint. ed mentioned calling neil finn and telling him at four in the morning how great liam was doing and how amazing he was..

san diego shows are always great..ed seemed hung over..or sleep deprived, but still played for 2 hours and 25 minutes... wish i was going to night 2..but just wanted to say thanks to ed and the ten club for the exprience..it was great

one thing about playing these small venues is that Ed and everyone can hear the hecklers. And when they get a reaction from either the crowd or Eddie, it just encourages other folks to scream.

Ed had some real good comebacks, but certainly nothing to deter others from continuing to yell-out.

  • The venue was amazing, i had 11th row, left orchestra, and it was as someone said earlier, TINY!! And the seating wasn't directly lined up like the Wiltern.

The show was amazing, and my friend grabbed the setlist from the sound guy this time around, i got it at LA 2.

I don't have it w/me, so i can't do complete confirmation. Masters Of War wasn't on it, but where he did play it has something that looks like 'Transit'. I'll get a photo of it and post it here in the next day or 2.

I do have to say though, LA 2 was better, and probably the best show i've ever seen.

I will add “The Barry White Experiment,” “Jessie's Girl" snippet and “Gremmie Out Of Control" tease to the set list if someone can tell me where to place them.

Also the “Elderly Woman” intro cover. Anybody know what version it was?

    Thanks for your help, edwho
