you said they were a punk band. thats technically correct in the sense that they are inspired by loud, fast, quick songs, and relatively simple chords and songs, its inaccurate to say they are straight up punk, which is what you said. "punk band". Blink 182, Green Day, are both great bands, but to say they are punk is kind of pushing the definition quite a bit. Sum 41 was more incfluenced by Blink than The Clash. Again, i love pop punk. But i think its disingenuous to call them punk. Punk to me conjurs up images of Jello Biafra, The Ramones at CBGB's, Sid and Nancy, London Calling, Fresh fruit from Rotting Vegetables. I dont picture FatLip or In too Deep.
you really wanna have this argument? sorry for not properly labeling a shit band that was actually influenced by nofx and not blink 182.

so does being on a major record label constitute as punk or do the ramones and clash get a pass for that? does opening up for the who constitute as punk or do the clash also get a pass for that. does making millions of dollars from your punk label constitute as punk or does nofx get a pass?

punk is a term coined to describe a young guy who takes it up the arse from an older man. now.. lets find out who's really punk here shall we???

  • ultimately, i think any discerning listener can tell the difference between the clash, the ramones, the dead kennedys, minor threat, Black Flag, and any of the bands mentioned so far: nofx, blink, green day, sum41.
Can you tell the difference between California Uber Alles, Kill the Poor, Lets Lynch the landlord, and Fatlip and In Too Deep? How about White Riot, Clampdown, The Guns of Brixton and Fat Lip and In too Deep? How about Seeing Red, I dont Wanna hear it, and Guilty of Being White and In too deep and Fat lip? If you can tell a difference between these bands and songs and Sum41, congrats you are a discerning listener. Are Fat Lip and In Too Deep catchy little numbers? Hell yeah, but are they punk? Are you actually suggesting to me that Sum41 is comparable in sound to any of these bands mentioned? Its kind of like calling Maroon 5, and Tool both rock bands. Can Maroon 5 play and write catchy good songs? Absolutely, but are they similar in sound or anything else to Tool? C'mon!

lets just remember that ultimately the grammy's are a joke. as Jeff asked regarding Eddie's infamous acceptance speech, how the hell do you give an award for art?

...not to mention, the grammy's have nominated Wilco for best new artist this year. yes. Wilco! are you fucking kidding me? talk about dropping the ball. as most of you probably know, wilco as been around nearly as long as PJ who just celebrated their 20th anniversary. just three short years less to be exact. i will dvr the grammy's. maybe. and hope that i can skim through it and see one or two nice performances like we had last year with dylan, the avett brothers and mumford & sons. that's all.

a pop punk band. and theirs really nothing wrong with that. but lets not make it sound like they are or were the pistols or the ramones or dead kennedys.
never said they were like those bands, so don't ASSume things, k thanks[/quote]

I don't wish to get into a debate about what is and what isn't punk rock, in my mind there are only two types of music, good and bad. Just remember that, first and foremost, punk is an attitude, a state of mind, not a musical genre, and secondly, the bands that were originally called 'punks' (Talking Heads, Blondie, Ramones, Television, Suicide, Patti Smith etc) were a very diverse bunch of musicians bunched together solely for journalistic ease. What most people now perceive as 'punk' (loud, fast, simple songs, shouted lyrics, spiky hair and safety pins) came only after Malcolm McLaren exported Richard Hells look to London and recruited Messrs Lydon, Cook, Jones and Matlock.

i agree, but last year was seen as a turning point, obviously it was wrong given the nominees this year, that the grammies were finally honoring good art, ie arcade fire, which obviously was a band few if any thought would win the award. The fact they honored a band who actually was deserving was important i think. That said, there have been some good best album choices on behalf of the grammys. The oh brother soundtrack was deserving of its win. And them honoring Outkast who create pretty out their music is also notable. And going back to the 90's the pick of Time out of Mind Dylan's album and then The miseducation of lauryn Hill all winning as well.

Where did you get this from? I'm looking at the nominations on the grammy web site right now and Wilco wasn't nominated for best new artist. The only nomination for Wilco is best rock album.
    2003: San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Seattle; 2005: Monterrey; 2006: Chicago 1 & 2, Grand Rapids, Cleveland, Detroit; 2008: West Palm Beach, Tampa; 2009: Austin, LA 3 & 4, San Diego; 2010: Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbus, Indianapolis; 2011: PJ20 1 & 2; 2012: Missoula; 2013: Dallas, Oklahoma City, Seattle; 2014: Tulsa; 2016: Columbia, New York City 1 & 2; 2018: London, Seattle 1 & 2; 2021: Ohana; 2022: Oklahoma City

I think the best new artist award may be the "best artist who may be new, and may have just broken through this year after working for x number of years" award. a few years back, like in 2009 or something, Phoenix won best new artist. and they had been a band for a decade up to that point, and of course it was only that year that they became the major band that they are now. I think thats what it was. Bieber was nominated for best new artist this year, but he;s been around since 2008/2009.

omg dude just let it go, jesus christ

again im sorry of mislabeling a really shit band

    :roll: :roll: :roll: :lol::lol:

yes fat lip is punk, its pop punk but still has those elements that pretty much the ramones made and every band has copied to the purest form. punk is punk to me weather it be oi! , nazi punk, skate punk, hardcore punk, horror punk, etc etc.

i did let it go, that post was from hours ago. Anyways, yeah, does anyone consider Nicki Minaj, Bon Iver, Skrillex or j cole new? all have been releasing music since 2007, and some even before that. as i said, its an award for bands who are new to a mainstream audience

do you really agree? cause you seem to find importance in these awards. i know you were ecstatic last year when arcade fire got album of the year...anyway, as for the poster who asked about the wilco nomination for best new artist. i believe i saw it among a list of their nominations that they posted on their facebook page a couple days ago. maybe it was a mistake, but they definitely posted it.

...as for the argument of nominating a 17 year old band for a 'new' artist award. i understand what you're trying to say, but really, is wilco more relevant now than they were in 2002 with yankee hotel foxtrot? or when their debut a.m. was released on reprise records (a major label!) in 1994 following the breakup of uncle tupelo, who already had some notoriety on their own as being pioneers within the alt-country scene. just so fucking stupid if you ask me. even arcade fire winning best new artist last year. they were already 7 years into their career. did they really break into the mainstream last year? or did they just get a bunch of headlining gigs at festivals based on their live reputation? maybe arcade fire had a moment, but from the perspective of a mainstream audience, arcade fire has come and gone and been forgotten about, and that's by the few people that ever acknowledged them to begin with. awards for art are shit. always have been. always will be. the only one that has some validity is the billboard awards, because i'm pretty sure those are based on album sales. at least you can recognize legitimate 'winners'.

Should be interesting with Whitney dying. Obviously heard they are gonna pay tribute to her, heard Jennifer Hudson is gonna do sing something of hers. Also looking forward to it with the Foos performance and some of the categories.

  • i'd be shocked if adele doesnt walk away tonight with an arm load of grammys including album of the year. its her year. she deserves it. she created an amazing record and it seems like her record was the only album this year that people actually bought, physically bought at stores.

it would be nice to see Bon Iver win a couple awards as well.

I dont see this year as having an Arcade Fire type surprise though.
  • i'd be happy if adele got album and record of the year, song of the year, best pop solo performance of the year, best pop vocal album of the year, and then bon iver got best new artist, Robyn getting best dance and electronic album
