I am happy that Wilco got a nomination.

It is interesting how the Foo's have 2 different songs nominated for 2 different categories:

    Best Rock performance - Walk
Best Hard Rock/Metal performance - White Limo

I can see them doing some sort of schticky performance of White Limo at the awards.
  • while i like alot of the artists in best album, the grammies obviously didnt get the message from last year, when many people felt the grammies finally were good again, with giving Arcade Fire the award for best album of the year. I respect all the artists on the list for best album, but could it be more mainstream? I dont understand it. They obviously took a liking to Bon Ivers 2nd album, its my favorite album of 2011. Why nominate it for every other major category but shut it out of best album?

I would have included The Weeknd in there somewhere. James Blake as well
  • i think its Adele's year. there is reason she's been on the radio so much. super talented and a great voice. I'd say all the major categories are hers to lose. I see her sweeping the awards

Cool! Happy for Mumford and Sons, The Cave is a great song! ;)

you said they were a punk band. thats technically correct in the sense that they are inspired by loud, fast, quick songs, and relatively simple chords and songs, its inaccurate to say they are straight up punk, which is what you said. "punk band". Blink 182, Green Day, are both great bands, but to say they are punk is kind of pushing the definition quite a bit. Sum 41 was more incfluenced by Blink than The Clash. Again, i love pop punk. But i think its disingenuous to call them punk. Punk to me conjurs up images of Jello Biafra, The Ramones at CBGB's, Sid and Nancy, London Calling, Fresh fruit from Rotting Vegetables. I dont picture FatLip or In too Deep.

you really wanna have this argument? sorry for not properly labeling a shit band that was actually influenced by nofx and not blink 182.

so does being on a major record label constitute as punk or do the ramones and clash get a pass for that? does opening up for the who constitute as punk or do the clash also get a pass for that. does making millions of dollars from your punk label constitute as punk or does nofx get a pass?

  • ultimately, i think any discerning listener can tell the difference between the clash, the ramones, the dead kennedys, minor threat, Black Flag, and any of the bands mentioned so far: nofx, blink, green day, sum41.
Can you tell the difference between California Uber Alles, Kill the Poor, Lets Lynch the landlord, and Fatlip and In Too Deep? How about White Riot, Clampdown, The Guns of Brixton and Fat Lip and In too Deep? How about Seeing Red, I dont Wanna hear it, and Guilty of Being White and In too deep and Fat lip? If you can tell a difference between these bands and songs and Sum41, congrats you are a discerning listener. Are Fat Lip and In Too Deep catchy little numbers? Hell yeah, but are they punk? Are you actually suggesting to me that Sum41 is comparable in sound to any of these bands mentioned? Its kind of like calling Maroon 5, and Tool both rock bands. Can Maroon 5 play and write catchy good songs? Absolutely, but are they similar in sound or anything else to Tool? C'mon!

lets just remember that ultimately the grammy's are a joke. as Jeff asked regarding Eddie's infamous acceptance speech, how the hell do you give an award for art?

...not to mention, the grammy's have nominated Wilco for best new artist this year. yes. Wilco! are you fucking kidding me? talk about dropping the ball. as most of you probably know, wilco as been around nearly as long as PJ who just celebrated their 20th anniversary. just three short years less to be exact. i will dvr the grammy's. maybe. and hope that i can skim through it and see one or two nice performances like we had last year with dylan, the avett brothers and mumford & sons. that's all.

I don't wish to get into a debate about what is and what isn't punk rock, in my mind there are only two types of music, good and bad. Just remember that, first and foremost, punk is an attitude, a state of mind, not a musical genre, and secondly, the bands that were originally called 'punks' (Talking Heads, Blondie, Ramones, Television, Suicide, Patti Smith etc) were a very diverse bunch of musicians bunched together solely for journalistic ease. What most people now perceive as 'punk' (loud, fast, simple songs, shouted lyrics, spiky hair and safety pins) came only after Malcolm McLaren exported Richard Hells look to London and recruited Messrs Lydon, Cook, Jones and Matlock.

i agree, but last year was seen as a turning point, obviously it was wrong given the nominees this year, that the grammies were finally honoring good art, ie arcade fire, which obviously was a band few if any thought would win the award. The fact they honored a band who actually was deserving was important i think. That said, there have been some good best album choices on behalf of the grammys. The oh brother soundtrack was deserving of its win. And them honoring Outkast who create pretty out their music is also notable. And going back to the 90's the pick of Time out of Mind Dylan's album and then The miseducation of lauryn Hill all winning as well.

Where did you get this from? I'm looking at the nominations on the grammy web site right now and Wilco wasn't nominated for best new artist. The only nomination for Wilco is best rock album.
