One thing to think about coming from someone who plays music...Ed was playing between 25-30 songs per night and when you include the different songs that he mixed it up with along this tour that means he had about 40-50 songs completely down. You have to remember that in this setting he was completely responsible for the whole song--no backing or even drums to blend in with. This means that he had to have these songs perfectly thought out and be able to execute them without thinking. To ask him to then mix up the setlist completely each night would probably mean that he would have had to have between 100-150 songs for the tour which is a bit much to ask (after all it is his first solo tour). Also Ed was trying to play stuff that he wrote on his own or stuff which had special significance to him. Just something to think about...
    Well said.
BTW, thanks to all for giving detailed reviews of all shows. For us, poor souls outside USA, it was pleasent reading (felt like I was there).

I'm sorry - but as soon as I heard those first notes; I was in shock. My jaw dropped after I let out a small gasp. Maybe I was just hearing things? That can't be...? Wow - it was! Even though it was a snippet - it was a welcome surprise and not a thing that I ever thought I would hear in my whole BR\PJ\EV musical life.

Great Pic!! She just looks so darn friendly.

I have to say, I was sitting in the front row of the mezzanine, just off center and noticed several camera flashes coming from the little side box she was sitting in. I thought it was weird that none of the security guards went over there, because just a few songs in they kicked a guy out of the second row for taking pics with a flash.

But when Ed introduced her it all made sense. Ya gotta let mom takes some pics!! :D

I love Ed's mom, and I don't even know her! How could you not love a woman who looks like that? She seems so proud and happy!
  • I just got back in town from both SD shows- loved both of them, but in my opinion night #1 was better. Ed just seemed looser and more fun (after he got over his hang-over grumpiness!!!) Night 2 it definitely seemed like he was there to do a job. I was sitting up in the tippy top balcony night 2 and it was a really different vibe than night 1 in the orchestra. I couldn't even see the people in the orchestra from up there, so I really felt out of the picture.

    Just a couple of notes:

    1. Did anyone else find the total silence in between songs awkward? I was almost missing the yelling!! And Ed's comments about people dying at shows- there were people that thought that was a joke and were laughing- obviously they didn't know what had happened.

    2. Hard Sun rocked!! I really hope they can incorporate that into the PJ shows somehow- its really anthemic and could almost take the place of RITFW as an ender IMO.

    3. Ed doesn't have a bald spot- believe me. The angle I was sitting, I would have seen it!

    4. I was so greatful at both shows that Ed opened up a little and let us get to know him. I love chatty Ed!!! He's hilarious! I just think that its great that we all got to see him with his guard down a little.

    5. He made one comment night 2 about 'you won't be seeing me drunk at these shows' because he felt that he was responsible for all of us and no one wanted to see the captain of a ship lose control. (paraphrasing...)

    6. Also, loved the comment about the fact that he actually brushes his teeth for these shows because they're so intimate!!! Funny.

    7. I'm really sorry for the people at night 2 that didn't get to see Arc. Watching him create that song was amazing and moving! And I loved that it stayed playing and faded out after he left the stage.

    8. Liam is awesome! Got his cd, but I haven't had a chance to listen yet. Best opener ever in my opinion!

All in all, I'm so glad I made the effort to go west to see these 2 shows- it was truly a special experience to just be able to sit and relax and enjoy the music AND the man!

But......I'm totally psyched for PJ in June!!!! :)
We're all different behind the eyes.

He followed up the brushing the teeth comment by saying that was the real reason he wasn't drunk. Taking a big swig of red wine after brushing your teeth is pretty gross.

And Liam's disc is very good, was listening to it today. Second Chance might be my favorite track
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Sounds like maybe you went to 2 shows too many. Maybe you should have given those tickets you were begging for to someone who would have appreciated it a bit more.
I went to 4 shows and loved them all. I have no problem with the setlists being the same because I understand that the shows are not meant for me alone. They are meant for everyone. I also apprecite the that there is the possibility that I will never hear the 'into The Wild' songs ever again... maybe one or two may pop up in an Ed pre-set at a show that I will not be in attendance... so, I'll take 'em as I can. and think about the people who only got to go to one show... i wouldn't want to deprive them of certain songs just because i already have them in my back pocket... that would be selfish of me, right.
My attitude is let it be... appreciate what i have and limit my wants to cut down on my regrets. These past 5 days were a lot of fun. i am very grateful that I was able to participate in them.
    peace...

Nice post... I like that "appreciate what I have and limit my wants to cut down on my regrets." Great way to approach the shows and an even greater way to approach life. It seems like our society is all about acquiring more and more shit, only to dispose of it to the detriment of our environment in order to make room to get more stuff to continue feeding our ever growing list of wants. I think that other person's post is indicative of what's going wrong the world... too much of the "it's all about me" and not enough of it's about all of us and how do I satisfy my needs and not necessarily all of my wants so that others can also satifisy their needs. I went to 3 shows, LA I and both SD shows and was extremely elated and grateful for the experiences. Since I haven't the faintest clue of what goes into even putting on a show, I'm not going to expect/demand anything. I went into the shows just happy to hear him sing in such small venues and what I got was so much more. Again, sorry for the pissy post, it's been a long week, I loved going to the shows but hated waking up at 5 am to go to work.
How I choose to feel,... Is how I am.

i attended sd1, but not sd2...for those that went to both, did he ever get a hold of the chick from colorado at 4am?

Unfortunately, he didn't bring it up again :-( I would have liked to have found out if he did though... even better, I would have liked to have gotten a call from him at 4 am...

What a fantastic show. Boy has Ed really developed himself into a master guitar man. He was almost flawless and displayed energetic power chords that to me were vintage Pete Townshend. Loved the various Pete teasers throughout the night that virtually none of the dazed locals got. Highlight for me was Let My Love Open The Door sing a long. I dont think there was anyone near me that knew the song but still a fun bit.

Acoustically this venue was amazing. Great f'n sound and we were all the way up in the rafters. Don't think I would see another show there though. This was an old building primarily set up for theatre and not concerts. Two bartenders for the entire venue was a real nightmare and the staff had several clueless weed smokers pulled and arrested in front of the venue. Pretty harsh.

Otherwise 5 stars for Ed. Would see him solo again in a heartbeat. Sorry for those who missed it. Maybe well get lucky and one of the shows was filmed for DVD.

That was a really cool moment that again no one around me had any clue about. I was awestruck and found it a touching tribute to the City and his beginnings.

This is the only show I got to see on this tour. I haven't been to a Pearl Jam show since 2000 but I have seen them as early as 1994. I really liked ITW and especially the soundtrack. I was really looking forward to this show and I very impressed overall. I was in the right orchestra eleven rows back, very close to Ed's mother.

I've lived in SD for 9 years now and have been to quite a few shows here, including PJ, and I have always felt SD crowds were kinda lame. I didn't think this crowd was that bad, not as loud as it could have been, but not bad compared to many shows here. Ed really was on top of the yellers early. He seemed frusterated at one point and tried to explain that if people want to be heard they could go through all the stuff he did to get to the point where they could have the stage to themselves. But then I think he got a little emotional about it and included people dying at his shows which I think went too far and kinda was a buzz kill for a little while. He seemed more relaxed later. I think he was maybe a little uptight about putting a great performance and having a good atmosphere because his mother was there. I didn't mind sitting for all the songs until the encore but I think it contributed to the less enthusiastic reactions after some songs. Whatever! I was there to hear him play and he did a great job.

He was pretty talkative and it was nice to have a glimpse of his humor and personality. Liked the references to growing up in San Diego, especially about his mother pawning her wedding ring for his guitar.

Highlights included Forever Young dedicated to his mother. It looked like he wiped away a tear after he finished. I really loved Rise, No Ceiling, Guaranteed, Society, and Hard Sun from ITW. I really liked the way Rise sounded live. Don't Be Shy, Trouble, and If You Want To Sing Out were exceptional. Trouble had lots of feeling and on IYWTSO he really sounded like Cat Stevens toward the end. I liked I am Mine a lot. Man of the Hour sounded really great. I thought Porch sounded really good solo. Millworker was great especially at the end where he was really working the guitar. He was a better guitar player than I was expecting. Let My Love Open the Door was a surprise and really fun. The skit with the Devil and George Bush was hilarious as others have described.

Overall an incredible night my wife and I will remember forever. My only regret is not hearing Arc after hearing everyone raving about it. I wish I had gone to the first show in San Diego as well. Thank you so much Eddie.
  • This is slightly off the subject, and I apologize, but does anyone know where you can download or get a boot of any Bad Radio songs, or of Ed covering one of the songs?

    Thanks!!

Eddie's guitar tech was on his toes as Ed was flowing from song-to-song. If there was going to be a song change; you could watch him ask for\select another guitar\mandolin\ukulele in order to play a request.

I was lucky enough to get into both nights. We had 10C tix first night and ended up 4th row center orch. Yeah, I was totally freaking out!! 2nd night we bought our tickets from stubhub, I just wasn't willing to travel from indiana and not get in on the 2nd night. I know it sucks but we had to get in-so we set 7th row dead center orch. Both nights were just absolutely incredible!

The thing that surprised me most was just how exceptional of a guitar player he is! Blew my mind, it was just perfect!

My favorite was all the Harold and Maude references and songs, considering it's a movie I live my love life by (that's why I love so much the Charlie Rose interview with Penn and Vedder when Ed talks about how some people can't date other people if they haven't seen that movie, I'm one of those people) so to say the least that was a very great experience for me to have him talk about it so much.

His Mom was great and SO PROUD! Security had to finally surround her towards the end of the theatre letting out because so many people wanted to give her a hug and thank her, really she is just so sweet.

I have read all the reviews of how the crowd was brought down with the comments of fans dieing at his shows and how he earned the mic so STFU, maybe because of where I was setting but didn't really seem to bring anyone around me down or if it did I didn't notice. I thought it was a right on comment and I was very proud of him for saying it! He doesn't want us to ever forget those people, I feel he has made it very purposeful to be preforming and reminding his audience how lucky we are because others are not with us anymore. RIGHT ON< ED!

I was also quite impressed with the set. Not just his corona box drum and living room type atmosphere, but with the backdrop. For the whole entire show, we see the set as if you were backstage. So you see the back of the set, like we are backstage with Eddie.
Then for the 1st encore, the 2nd backdrop curtain is opened, it is airbrushed to show the curtain slightly open as if we are peaking out through the back of the stage to the audience.
Then the 2nd encore, the 3rd backdrop curtain is as if we are finally at the show, not backstage anymore-this is the normal theatre type curtain you would see.
Then again for the last encore, the 4th backdrop curtain is San Diego Beach view. Bright, Blue and Beautiful! I love all the work that the set people went to, it was just GREAT!

We waited after the shows to try and meet Ed, but he left immediately after both shows, not a big deal-only the girl I was traveling with really wanted to meet him, but we did get to meet a few others and I just would love to send out a BIG THANK YOU TO: Liam and EJ(easily the coolest chic, I have ever met), George-you really didn't have to spend so much time talking to us, but we really appreciate it, and Kerrie, you are such a sweet heart!

Also want to give a big thank you to patrickredeyes for all the work he did for the fundraiser, I know there were a lot of others too. So thank you everybody for all that work, it wasn't easy! And it is much appreciated by those of us who attended.

Eddie, Thank you So So much, really I never expected just how great it was going to be. Please do it again!

And last and definitely not least THANK YOU 10C for the tickets, I know you don't hear it enough, but I was obviously blown away by our seats. Thanks!!

His name is George Webb, and has been with PJ since 1990. He was so nice to us after the show, even though he was so busy.
