A night full of juicy hometown goodies. One of my favorites:

"My mom took me to see Harold & Maude when I was 12 at the La Paloma Theater right up there (points North)"

The La Paloma, infamous among PJ fans for the 1999 show Ed did on his own, was a perfect example of the funky laid back character Encinitas had in the 70's. Instead of standard seats along the sides, there were soft carpeted boxes without chairs so you could lean back and stretch out your legs. Perfect stoner and/or make out setup (I'd imagine ; ). I saw a lot of surf films and The Song Remains the Same there during that era.

People think Encinitas is low key now, but it's changed so much since it's gone from a town of 5,000 with flower fields and nurseries to incorporating the neighboring towns and balloning out to 62,000. It was great to come back to San Diego County and see Ed, but the place is so different it doesn't even seem that familiar.

After four shows, I feel incredibly luck to have experienced Ed's music and performance in such an intimate and powerful way. Now I'm really looking to another dose of the sound and fury of the full band. I'm going back to Washington, elated, exhusted, totally satisfied, missing the woods and the views of the islands and the sound, wanting to get rested up so I can go back out on the road blazing this summer.

I hope Ed feels exactly the same way.

Oh yeah the mention of La Paloma was awesome!! I saw a play there years ago and it was neat to hear him bring it up.

I didn't see where anyone mentioned Ed's mom being in the audience. It was her birthday and she got a standing ovation. Ed said he was going to sing Happy Birthday, but that that would do. :) He then played Forever Young for her on the guitar she sold her wedding ring to buy him when he was 14?. Our family was seated next to her and they said she was very teary when he sang it. :)

omg that is so sweet. sounds like a special night.

  • Another great night at the spreckles. Comparing the 2 shows, myself and the 2 people with me thought night 1 was the better show for sure. Still an awesome performance though. Millworker was a huge standout, the way he attacks that acoustic guitar is amazing. I've never seen a hand move that fast. If eddie ever wants to switch over to speed metal, it would be no problem.

The satan/george bush thing was hilarious. While the barry white music was playing eddie was doing his spoken word thing, bush takes satan behind an amp and gets on his knees and starts bobbing his head up and down. Then a stream of white stuff starts shooting out. The crowd was rolling.

Everyone came out at the end in the lab coats and took a bow to signify the end of the tour.

    Last night was great!
Though I still can't wrap my head around it - here are some general, disorganized thoughts:

Generally - fun set list, great, small venue, Ed sounded amazing as usual, his guitar playing was particularly impressive, but the energy in the room from the crowd was weak.

As far as the crowd, it was a lower energy show than either of the LA nights.. In a way I thought that was good, and in a way bad.
Not as much shouting out, but, low energy and a lot of sitting still. (I was in the front row of the lower balcony, so I had a good view of what was going on in the orchestra section)

There were moments of true silence in between a few songs.. Ed commented on it at one point, saying, "so nice and quiet" or something to that effect.

Also not a huge sing along response, which was kind of sad in that small venue.

Maybe people were mellower b/c Ed made such a point of asking people to shut up right from the start. But there's a happy medium! You can get into the songs but not yell stuff out when he's talking!!

Ed was chatty, but many of his stories were more political and less fun, chatty banter.

Some other things he talked about that I haven't seen mentioned - Someone yelled out, "How was the surf?" and he kinda said good, and said "Waimanalo"
Then later, when Liam came on stage to sing with him, Ed said that they'd had a good surf session at San Onofre, he said they "pulled the tour bus right down to the beach" - THAT would have been cool to see!!
I wanna hear stories from people who were THERE!! Anyone?

He talked about Trestles, and how it's nice to "win one" once in awhile.

Fun to hear him say that "you know you have a good mom when she pawns her wedding ring to buy you your first guitar, and that's it right there" - as he pointed to a guitar behind him. That was special especially since his mom was there.

The Barry White / Lucifer / George Bush thing was funny..

The Bad Radio song (though brief) was awesome.

He actually took requests - or attempted to - twice asking the audience what we wanted to hear.

He wished Jason a happy birthday at one point..

At the end of the night, right after Ed gave a pic to a guy in the front, someone threw a Tshirt at him.
Ed took it, and as I could see backstage from my seat on the side, as he got backstage he made a point of opening it up and looking at it. (I couldn't see what was on it).

I really missed hearing Arc.. Though I know we were lucky to get that both nights in LA. I just think it would have sounded AMAZING in that little theater last night..

Overall, I was BLOWN AWAY by how great these solo shows were. Thank you Ed and 10C for some truly unforgettable nights!!

I had a good time last night. However, the crowd was pretty lame and ED played too many songs that were unrecognizable for most. The crowd seemed to think they were there to see 91' ED. They got 2008 Ed instead...Which didn't bother me a bit!

I enjoyed the music, but I really enjoyed Ed's personality!

He had so much to say! I've never and probably will never hear him speak so much at a show. His MOM was there, which was a great thing to witness. She was up dancing and screaming. Very cool!

I thought it was cool to see the actor from ITW. He is sooooo small! Ed is a small guy, but this guy was smaller than ED!

Overall, it was exactly what I expected: Lame SD night 2 crowd.... Great Venue...Happy ED....Mixture of PJ, ITW, Covers.

Great Experience! Bring on the full band!

PS: I hate to say it, the guy in the wheelchair (stage right behind Ed's mom) was yelling out songs the whole night. Very annoying!

He was all cracked out. I don't really know how else to say it besides that. He was completely spazzing out on the sidewalk outside the hotel.

Ed definitely set the tone early with his request for the shouters to STFU. He told a funny story about talking to fans after the shows and friends of his asking him if he was annoyed with the shouters. He explained that to him, he didn't really notice much since he was in the zone when he was on stage, but that he was starting to get the idea that the shouters were becoming annoying to the other members of the audience who didn't appreciate the yelling. So as he finishes his story, someone in Mezz level screams out something, and he just goes off... First talking about how the person should get up on stage and use the mic, but then saying that they couldn't because they hadn't gone through the life that he had, hadn't written and practiced songs for days on end, that they hadn't gone through the experience of people dying at one of their shows, and that the microphone was his. At that point, you could almost cut the tension in the room with a knife. Needless to say, the crowd settled down for the most part, with a couple of random idiots still feeling like they needed to shout.

A couple of nice moments when Eddie was talking about his mom, and how she pawned her watch to buy a guitar for him, "That's it right there..." with a big smile. And when he requested for the crowd to join him in singing happy birthday to her, but after a LONG and loud standing ovation for her when he asked her to stand, he said that there would be no need to sing because the ovation was much more "moving". Definitely an emotional moment for Eddie.

For Let My Love Open The Door, he divided up the men's voices and the women's voices "...just like at Disneyland!" He asked the men to sing 'Let My Love Open The Door' as low as they could go, and the women to accompany with the 'WooOooh' part. Cool sing-along.

The Barry White sound loop, Satan, & Bush act was f'n hilarious. The topper was the 'climax' behind the speaker stack and Satan and "Georgie" walking off holding one another. Pure hilarity.
  • My only show, glad it was this one. I thought the crowd loved the show; it was a good crowd, IMO. SD's always a good vibe.

Anyways, no one mentioned that Let My Luv was a co-ed sing-along for the backing vox. That was cool and well orchestrated.

The Bad Radio song was really good. I'm happy he played Goodbye, too. One of my faves.

Ed talking shit to the crowd was funny. And he was actually talking about all the shows prior to. He was in a great mood. The only time the crowd was uncomfortable was when he talked about people dying at their shows. There was an awkardness for a second.

I don't think anyone mentioned GW Bush "finishing" into the air when the Devil was taking care of him.... hahaha.

Before the show, I had this lady take a pic of me and my buddy w/ my cell while we drinking in the lobby. Had to show her how to press the Capture button etc. She was really excited to do it. So, she was by herself, just drinking a beer, waiting for a nephew, she said. After the pic, she starts chatting us up for 10-15 min about SD and PJ etc..... And In the middle there, somewhere, she just goes, "I'm Eddie's mom." She lives in Carlsbad now. She talked about her grandaughter, Liam Finn and Crowded House, and how the irony, or full circle connection was cool cuz Eddie really loved CH growing up. She also said Eddie hopes that his daughter will be on the stage and open for Liam someday, or something like that. She was very proud of him; sounded like it was the first time she was talking him up or whatever (you know, like it was 1992, or whatever). She's a very, very sweet, kind-hearted lady. So, long story, short, be kind to your elders. And I have a pic on my cell taken by Ed's mom (Karen was her name). Eddie pointed her out later during the show and she got a standing ovation.

    Peace

This was when Jason called me during Happy Birthday for Ed's Mom thinking how you guys were gonna sing happy birthday, since was my birthday too :o
Apparently, someone from the audience said sth: Whos that guy on the phone? Someone else yelled: Thats Jason!
And then Ed said: Theres a person called Jason there, happy birthday!

I paraphrased it from Jason told me in the texts cause I was confused after the phone call. I didn't believe he actually threw his phone on stage so Eddie can sing me happy birthday. He didn't actually do it, thank god...haha :D
I heard you guys laughing and a bit of Happy Birthday and felt I was there for a moment :o

You hit two of my comments exactly.

PJ 91 - Two guys behind me started bitching after the first encore that "he hasn't played even one Pearl Jam song!" Dude, have you listened to the band since they quit playing video's on MTV? WTF do you think three of the 1st four songs were?

Loud Guy Behind Ed's Mom - He was trying to be nice, and the stuff he yelled wasn't that annoying, but the volume was WAY to much for a small venue. It's cool to participate, but you don't have to comment on everything Ed says.

As for the crowd being mellow, I'm fine with rocking out sitting down at a venue like that (not even so much that it's small, but just the feel of the place). It's not like he was playing the Casbah and everyone was sitting on the floor.

    Other random thoughts:
    - Cool to hear "Walking the Cow" for the first time in 14 years.
    - I was sitting directly across from Ed's mom, someone asked me to pass her a note after the standing O.
    - Stoked to here Porch.
    - Really wanted to hear Picture in a Frame (and thought San Diego Serenade would have been a nice surprise addition to the set list).
    - 1st time I've been to a preshow event. It was fun having some beers with fellow fans, including the guy from Melborne that took a pic with Ed's mom while standing in line with her at will call.
    - Not to be elitist, but at a venue that small it would be nice to have some 10c only shows, cut down on the "Hey, it's a hot ticket so I have to be there factor"
    - Almost forgot about the two groupies that tried to snake front row seats. WAY too much perfume, too much cleavage, and too f'ing lame.
    - Millworker was a highlight, had never heard the song before and now I think I have to get a copy.
    - Had no idea Liam's dad did Throw Your Arms Around Me, I love that song. Fun to watch them play it together.
    - I liked the comments about the CCC hearings and the Union folks that were bussed in. I remember in LA '06 there were picketers outside the Forum. Before Unemployable Ed mentioned that the band would have chosen another venue if they knew there was labor strife. My g'friend at the time commented that they shouldn't have played the shows at all, so we argued for a while. Tough at times to make choices when causes you support collide.
    - Stoked for the mini-tour; looking forward to Camden; hope they play the west coast later this summer; wouldn't mind hitting the Gorge for Labor Day.
    1994 - Bridge School I; 2005 - The Gorge; 2006 - SD & LA I; 2008 - SD II(EV) & Camden I;
    2009 - LA III & SD; 2011 - SD (EV) & LBC (EV); 2013 - SD & LA II; 2022 SD (EV)

I love that you got to meet Ed's mom completely by accident and she was so open and nice.

I was expecting to hear Arc again and then counted and realized he'd already done it at nine shows. I wasn't sure too many people heard his line about 9 people dying at his shows. I gasped. The sadness and outrage about that is still very clearly close to the surface with him.

I really got what he was saying in that speech. He has gone through seven levels of hell to get to this stage of his career. He obviously has a great time with the music and enjoys playing live, but there's an emotional and physical toll to pay for putting that much out there. For those of us in the audience it's fun night out, and in some cases a chance to or hear our favorite rarity to try to *talk* with him personally by yelling stuff out. I think for him, especially these solo shows, it is a serious opportunity to communicate ideas and issues that are important to him. I could see he put a lot of thought into building an atomsphere, creating the setlists, presenting the themes. That's what bugged me about all the unsolicited requests.

I haven't seen anyone else mention the lengthy update he gave us about the West Memphis Three. He said he received word just yesterday that Damien Echols was granted a new pre-trial hearing to be held June 8 (?). He spoke passionately about Damien being an innocent man being held on death row for 9 years after only $2800 was spent on his defense by the State.
He said he hoped the next time he does this kind of thing (a solo show) that he can bring Damien on stage and have him help sing. He thanked Susan Sarandon for telling him about the case, calling her "One of the most beautiful people on the planet." He asked us to keep an eye on the case and contribute. It was very moving for me.

Okay, but have nine people died right in front of you at work lately? Ever need 24/7 security to protect you from a gun-toting stalker? Not likely unless you've been in Iraq. Anyone that endures that sceanario has my sympathy and respect.

Dude... I know you're a big fan and go to tons of shows... I've seen you at a couple so I'm trying to be sympathetic here.

I am the first one that loves to hear rarities and I know I complain when PJ doesn't mix it up ... but... dude!! Forever Young??? Millworker???? Those were amazing... even if you saw them a few nights in a row. Millworker was a major highlight for me actually. Porch??? what!??? And while I wouldn't be heartbroken not to see Around the Bend or Dead Man... it's still a change of pace ... even a few shows in a row. I mean... it's certainly not nearly as repetitive as the 70th time hearing even flow live.

Sounds like you just are not that in to the EV solo experience to me.

This really belongs in a different thread but....

He deserves respect for the things he has done with music. However, my respect and sympathy is for my friends in Iraq who put there lives on the line every day.

His comments last night were lame IMO. It came off really selfish to me....There are plenty of people suffering in this world. If anyone knows that it's ED.

For him to say, "I've been through way more shit than you, so shut up when I sing. You owe me that"

    .....is just plain lame!

Okay, but have nine people died right in front of you at work lately? Ever need 24/7 security to protect you from a gun-toting stalker? Not likely unless you've been in Iraq. Anyone that endures that sceanario has my sympathy and respect.

I thought the comment Ed made about the people dying at a show was inappropriate for the situation.

I mean... he was chastising someone for yelling ... The yelling is rude, I agree... but what does it have to do with people dying? Does that mean you only have a right to speak if someone died, ...huh? Totally irrelevant and extreme. He should have stopped with "assholes in the audience" and that kind of thing.

Sounds like you just are not that in to the EV solo experience to me.
That is the impression I'm getting as well.
