He deserves respect for the things he has done with music. However, my respect and sympathy is for my friends in Iraq who put there lives on the line every day.
His comments last night were lame IMO. It came off really selfish to me....There are plenty of people suffering in this world. If anyone knows that it's ED.
For him to say, "I've been through way more shit than you, so shut up when I sing. You owe me that"
.....is just plain lame!
That wasnt really the point of what he was trying to say....Regardless...people pay to hear Ed sing, and will here his point of view, his thoughts, his stories.
It was an Eddie Vedder show, not an "Eddie Vedder and every asshole that felt like screaming that night" show...
The point was, it was his show, and he should be able to say what he wants. I paid to see and hear Ed...not everyone else. If the screaming assholes want to have their own show, great!!! But I wont pay to see it....

Some of you people need to lighten up on the man! Yes we all suffer and sometimes we can only see our own pain. No one seemed to be listening when it was on a lighter note so he took it to another level. My love to that man for putting up with everyones bullshit!!!!!

Cheers to that!
It was an amazing experience regardless of any BS that went on! Once in a lifetime!!!
Sacramento 10-30-00, Bridge School 10-20 and 10-21-01, Bridge School 10-25 and 10-26-01, Irvine 06-02-03, Irvine 06-03-03, San Diego 06-05-03, San Diego 07-07-06, Los Angeles 07-09-06, Santa Barbara 07-13-06, London UK 06-18-07, San Diego 10-9-09, San Diego 2013, LA 1 2013
I was expecting to hear Arc again and then counted and realized he'd already done it at nine shows. I wasn't sure too many people heard his line about 9 people dying at his shows. I gasped. The sadness and outrage about that is still very clearly close to the surface with him.
I really got what he was saying in that speech. He has gone through seven levels of hell to get to this stage of his career. He obviously has a great time with the music and enjoys playing live, but there's an emotional and physical toll to pay for putting that much out there. For those of us in the audience it's fun night out, and in some cases a chance to or hear our favorite rarity to try to *talk* with him personally by yelling stuff out. I think for him, especially these solo shows, it is a serious opportunity to communicate ideas and issues that are important to him. I could see he put a lot of thought into building an atomsphere, creating the setlists, presenting the themes. That's what bugged me about all the unsolicited requests.
I haven't seen anyone else mention the lengthy update he gave us about the West Memphis Three. He said he received word just yesterday that Damien Echols was granted a new pre-trial hearing to be held June 8 (?). He spoke passionately about Damien being an innocent man being held on death row for 9 years after only $2800 was spent on his defense by the State.
He said he hoped the next time he does this kind of thing (a solo show) that he can bring Damien on stage and have him help sing. He thanked Susan Sarandon for telling him about the case, calling her "One of the most beautiful people on the planet." He asked us to keep an eye on the case and contribute. It was very moving for me.
Wow, thanks for sharing the updates!!!
I would love for him to continue doing a solo tour and bringing Damien on with him!
Thank you so much, SDHSClassof82!
I also enjoyed other reviews and even that blow job skit. haha... that's hilarious!!!
I can't believe it only happens in SD.... *shaking head*

hey... I didn't take it personally but it definitely disturbed the vibe of the show when he basically equated the right to talk with people dying.
I wasn't pissed off... I was more... I don't know... embarrassed for him? But, hey,... that's ed... he is real and real people sometimes don't say the right thing in every situation. You take the good with the bad... but the realness is a lot of why the good moments are so special ... so it works out.
Overall ... good show music-wise, ... vibe/energy not that great. I loved Tuesday night's show and thought Ed was so funny and cool that night that it was probably impossible to live up to that expectation the next day.
Another great comment here...Wow, thanks for sharing the updates!!!
Thank you so much, SDHSClassof82!
Thank you, glad you liked it. I can see a lot of us had very different experiences of the same show. Which is all good and makes the fanviews fun to read. I loved the fanviews from the last Europe tour and was thrilled when my turn came. I'll be waiting for the recaps from the south and back east this summer.

i wasnt there but it sounds like he tried to make his point and leave it to the "assholes in the crowd" part, and while hes trying to say that someone in the crowd shouted him down.
he has reason to get pissed off if certain people in the crowd dont respect either the other audience members or ed himself.
if Ed mentioning Roskilde victims did make it awkward for the crowd, thatd emphasise his point - This is work for him, not just a fun nite out. (i was at Copenhagen show and thought talking about this made ed seem much more human, can you imagine the entire 8000 arena silent for his speeches that nite? - incredibly somber - but in a healthy way)
he puts a lot of physical & emotional energy into it, and it mustve disappointed him when fans told him after his other shows that hecklers were ruining it for them
My guess is that probably more than half the crowd in attendance has no clue what Ed was referring to when he said that (about Roskilde). Being that there weren't any 10C tix, there were alot of randoms.

I was there, and I couldn't have put it any better. It wasn't that Ed was equating Roskilde and the right to speak, its that he's been through a lot and worked hard to get to this point, and he's chosen the songs to express that. Dirty Frank obviously doesn't do that, or it would have made the cut for this tour.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
It was great, loved getting some rarities, thanks for "Don't Be Shy," "Her Majesty" and "Let My Love Open the Door" Ed!!
Out of the 4 shows I caught, this was the weirdest crowd. In SB, LA1 and LA2, Ed had the same reaction to people constantly yelling. First, he tried to ease into asking them to STFU, then got a little more serious about it. At those three shows, people kind of eased up on the yelling... and Ed seemed to appreaciate that, went on with the shows and we all had a great time. But the crowd for SD2 just didn't seem to get it... or care... and Ed clearly got annoyed. I do think he intimidated the crowd into utter "non-reaction" with his "I earned the right to be up here" speech, but people simply wouldn't stop and he DID earn the right to be up there, so maybe we could all just respect his wishes???
Anyway, that being said, I felt like he did try to "apologize" to the crowd and get them back into it. He offered up some lighter stories, actually asked for requests later.. even offering to take a request from a woman who was downright obnoxious earlier in the evening, whom he had specifically asked to STFU. Her response was to yell something nasty back at him. It was just weird. I would have said, "Look I'm sorry for yelling so much, my enthusiasm got the best of me, NOW WOULD YOU PUH-LEAZE PLAY "CAN'T KEEP!!!!" Lost opportunity there.
But the energy level was just off... he practically had to beg people to pick up the chorus to "No More" -- and they still didn't seem that into it.
So, that's just my take on the under current of the evening. I still loved the show. He sounded fantastic.
It was a particularly great version of "Millworker" -- almost like he was releasing some of his frustrations with the crowd during the very impresssive and friggin' fast guitar work toward the end.
Loved the story about pulling the tour bus right on up to the beach in San Onofre for a surf. And also the recognition of the Union workers during the story about Trestles. It's a complicated situation, and he was acknowledging that -- saying "hey, I get it that people's jobs are involved... but I still don't want a friggin' toll road going right through a state park."
Thought the Sean Penn roast song was hilarious!! Would have loved to seen Sean's face when Ed did it at the Berkley show.
Love the personal remarks about growing up in SD, the La Poloma, the story about his mom pawning her wedding ring for his first guitar and pointing it out on stage... and of course, seeing his mom there and sending her some birthday wishes.
Over all it was a damn fine time.
If I had to pick my fave out of SB, LA1, LA2, and SD2 -- I'd have to go with LA2. The energy was incredible, Eddie was in a great mood and then all the OUTSTANDING stuff with Ben Harper.
But really, I loved something about each one of them. Thanks Ed!!!
"Holly f**k, that was so amazing, I just forgot who I came here to see!!" - Courtesy of the guy in the U2 t-shirt standing next to me in Aloha Stadium, Post PJ
EXACTLY!!! The couple next to me didn't sing along ONCE, didn't clap, sat with their arms folded. I think I was the only one (except the guy in front of me) who actually rocked out to Porch and Lukin!
P.S. It was really great meeting you last night!!
Hey, the lady behind me was pretty into it too!
Nice meeting you as well, that 5:45 alarm sucked again this morning, but I'm getting through it...
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
I saw 3 shows, LA1, LA2, and San Deigo 1... I would not have went to SD1 if someone paid me to go... How can you people sit through shows where the setlists are all almost exactly the same?
...
Sounds like maybe you went to 2 shows too many. Maybe you should have given those tickets you were begging for to someone who would have appreciated it a bit more.
I went to 4 shows and loved them all. I have no problem with the setlists being the same because I understand that the shows are not meant for me alone. They are meant for everyone. I also apprecite the that there is the possibility that I will never hear the 'into The Wild' songs ever again... maybe one or two may pop up in an Ed pre-set at a show that I will not be in attendance... so, I'll take 'em as I can. and think about the people who only got to go to one show... i wouldn't want to deprive them of certain songs just because i already have them in my back pocket... that would be selfish of me, right.
My attitude is let it be... appreciate what i have and limit my wants to cut down on my regrets. These past 5 days were a lot of fun. i am very grateful that I was able to participate in them.

One thing to think about coming from someone who plays music...Ed was playing between 25-30 songs per night and when you include the different songs that he mixed it up with along this tour that means he had about 40-50 songs completely down. You have to remember that in this setting he was completely responsible for the whole song--no backing or even drums to blend in with. This means that he had to have these songs perfectly thought out and be able to execute them without thinking. To ask him to then mix up the setlist completely each night would probably mean that he would have had to have between 100-150 songs for the tour which is a bit much to ask (after all it is his first solo tour). Also Ed was trying to play stuff that he wrote on his own or stuff which had special significance to him. Just something to think about...
PJ 91 - Two guys behind me started bitching after the first encore that "he hasn't played even one Pearl Jam song!" Dude, have you listened to the band since they quit playing video's on MTV? WTF do you think three of the 1st four songs were?
quote]
That is the curse of the second show!!!! Drunk Frat guys who weren't even alive when Ten came out!
As far as the groupies in the first row.....
Some guy was giving people better seats as they walked in the door of the venue. He was stopping random people and giving them front row seats. Those skanks probably got lucky, which pisses me off because of all people to put in the front row, you put them...!!!???
Yeah, I agree in part, only problem was these guys were mid-40's or later! Another interesting age comment, couple next to me was older and didn't rock out at all to Porch or Lukin, but were way into it on the cover songs I didn't recognize. Interesting balance between us.
Groupies got the boot when actual ticketholders showed up. Not sure what was said, but the couple that had been sitting next to them looked relieved and was chatting away with the ticketholders.

I agree. And I know people who only saw one show... and they absolutely loved it. it was the only time they ever heard 'Walking The Cow'... or 'Throw Your Arms Around Me' or 'Around The Bend'. I don't think it's fair to deny them anything because some of us were fortunate enough to see more than one show.
And seriously... if i had felt so disgruntled... I would have found one of those people who hadn't seen a show yet and given them my ticket. I would rather have someone else experience the feeling I had, than sit there and say, "Oh... no... here comes 'Guaranteed' again" to the person sitting next to me.
Appreciate what you have... and forget about what you want. The way I play it... graciously accept what is offered and say, 'Thank you'.

Cosmo, still out there as a gentle voice of reason.....
hi by the way!
I am NOT a heckler, but after both LA shows, when I saw Ed pick up the uke, I HAD to yell "Blue Red Grey"
Personally, I never need to see Soon Forget, Around the Bend, Walking The Cow, Forever Young, Porch, MILLWORKER!!!!!, Dead Man, Hard Sun(especially if it is lip synced), and the others that he played at EVERY SINGLE SHOW!
Sorry to be mean, but you are acting like a spoiled little bitch. Personally, I think you are over Pearl Jam and Ed, but can't admit it. It is natural though. At some point you just go to too many shows and listen to too many boots.
For example, I haven't slept in about 32 hours because I last minute decided to fly from indy to see this second San Diego show. Yeah, the show was great, but I think my days of traveling long distances to see them are over. There was a time and place when traveling to 10 shows a tour was great, but I gotta think at some point it becomes old. Still unbelievably fun, but you are satisfied after seeing 2 shows instead of 8.
Yeah, it shocked me to hear him mention that. The crowd definitely stayed quiet. It wasn't like people shouted during the songs themselves. He could have taken care of things they way he was without the speech. He was angry going into the show in my opinion.

I am from Chicago and wish I could've seen those shows more than once. Ed has one solo album out and he wants to play that material. Is this like seeing PJ in 1991-92 and complaining about them playing Porch, Wash, Once every show? What I'd give to hear/see those early shows again over and over. Appreciate what you people witnessed in California......because a lot of us are jealous.
