U2 are not overrated. They never have been. They've had some of the biggest tours in music history. They changed and redefined stadium shows. They've sold over 150 million albums. They have some of the biggest selling albums in music history. They've won 22 Grammy's, tied with Stevie Wonder for the most.
I guess you believe Elvis, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones are not good because, as you say, "Mass appeal doesn't mean something is good".
Not all bands with mass appeal are over rated (such as elvis, beatles, zeppelin, stones) but all over-rated bands have an elements of mass appeal (such as U2)
You and bushleaguer28 say U2 is overrated and I disagree with that. I say My Morning Jacket and Arcade Fire are overrated and people disagree with me.Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

200 million albums actually. Never understood why there is so much hate for U2 on this board (aside from Bono himself). Nothing wrong with mass appeal, it means they're doing something right. They've been going for years and still selling albums. What's worse are bands with promise who go break up after only a few years and could have gone on for much longer. U2 are definitely not overrated, imo.0 -

Good point about them lasting this long. They've been together for 35 years with essentially the same members (The Edge's brother was in it and then he left).Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

According to bushleaguer28, bands and artists with mass appeal (bands I listed and you listed and I like them all) are not good.
You and bushleaguer28 say U2 is overrated and I disagree with that. I say My Morning Jacket and Arcade Fire are overrated and people disagree with me.
In what world did I say any band with mass appeal was overrated? I'm simply saying that you can't just end a story by saying they have mass appeal therefore not overrated. That's just silly - the two aren't mutually exclusive. Some AMAZING bands don't have any mass appeal. Some shit bands have tons of mass appeal. And PLEASE for the LOVE OF GOD don't cite grammy's as proof for your argument.
My opinion is that U2 is overrated in terms of the quality of their music. My argument doesn't even consider how many tickets they've sold because that's simply not a good barometer to judge music by. See - Beiber, Jonas's, T-Swift etc. Do good bands sell lots of tickets? Yes that's inevitable. But shit bands sell tons of tickets too. You can't just say "lots of tickets therefore not overrated."0 -

The little slice of talent they had left the band.0 -
U2 - wait, I'll play you one of their songs on my guitar - dinka, dinka, dinka, dinka, dinka. How was I? Yes, correct - which song was that? Most of them!!!
Bruce Springsteen - populist crap. Here, I'll sing you one of his songs - in bad raspy, crappy voice where a rich performer (I can't call him a singer) and his middle class fans pretend they're downtrodden - "I was born in a poor neighborhood, Go USA, Go USA, Go!" Which song was that? Most of them!!!
Thank you. Begin flaming.....Now.Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.0 -

I now feel like I know their entire catalogs.0 -
Radiohead - pure drivel to me. feel they are a band people say they like to show how much they 'get' music or something
Beck - horrible. never understood the appeal of anything he did
Tool - just don't get it at all0 -

This argument is pointless....they are just going to be some music fans who are NOT going to appreciate any music the the band U2 will create plain and simple. Just like they're some fans that can't stand anything Michael Jackson, Pearl Jam or RUSH has created and produced. I say let it be all of these bands and artists have their fans and their fans love and appreciate their music. Personally I love the band since the Boy album and when I first saw them on the WAR Tour.
PS...I know some friends music who have their own bands who believe there's no difference between
Pearl Jam and Creed.
