I can't believe that anyone could be negative or dissatissfied with any Pearl Jam show.... They were amazing, as they always are. There was definitely a special energy running through the band last night, which in turn flowed through all the audience. The decision to play Jeremy blew me and my friend away, and I think I speak for all Newfoundlanders when I say we felt honored and very special that PJ would grace our little island with thier love and music. Immense gratitude emmanates today from the minds and hearts of all the newfies I know for the fact that we got to see Pearl Jam right here in our own home. I heard the boys had a really good time @ Bianca's, a very nice restaurant here downtown, and i can only hope that they enjoyed the experience so much, that they will actually come back someday. Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart, i saw PJ in toronto in 2000, and last night made me love the band even more.....if that was possible....Thanks again, JenD
Well said!
I got this from another section featuring an Ed interview in Spin magazine:
"...it's about the purity of the experience, the potential music has to reach people and communicate. It doesn't matter the size of the communion, y'know? Thirty, 40, 150 people. It's so powerful. So for me, and many others, even kids who aren't in bands, it's been a shining energy, a good force."
That's the kind of connection these guys had here in St. John's. I saw the band in Toronto in 2000 as well, and I have to say, these concerts were actually better, and infused with so much passion!
Thanks for coming....hope to see PJ again in the near future:)
someone pulled Eddie to the side and were pointing to their watch... Eddie looked pissed and went and told Jeff and Matt... I guess management REALLY did want them to get off stage.
Yeah i saw that as well....i really think it had something to do with them being rushed...
Either way my First 2 PJ shows were everythign i expected and more!!
i thought those shows would be better too,
but i have to say WINNIPEG was the gem of the tour.....it was really special
OKay from what I have read/heard I see the "gems" out of the tour being the following shows...although ever show was great for its own individual reasons but from a bootleg collector I recommend (for the Canadian portion)...Vancouver (30 songs and very loud)....Calgary (great setlist and even louder than Vancouver)....Saskatoon (awesome setlist)...Winnipeg (crazy loud)....Kitchener (very fucking loud)....London & Ottawa (amazing setlists)...and Halifax (no explanations needed for this one...love this boot)...those are my picks for gems although I would have killed to be at more shows....this is just my opinion....
Thats a shame they had to leave somewhat early...willing to bet if they werent playing Pittsburgh right away...they would have played longer....anyways looks like an awesome two nights in St.Johns....now sadly back to reality and no more PJ in Canada....:(
sat rocked harder-more punk rock-high energy- got my Don't Gimme No lip which I had been singin all through the Newark airport.
sunday had some special treats in there-but all n all short and the energy bounced. Newfoundland was so small town that all the stores had only wooden penguins and knitted sweaters and shit but everyone was genuinely nice.
We ate at Biancas the night after Pearl Jam which by NYC standards was mediocre at best, but for this town it was like eating at the Prince's Palace. Rode the elevevator in the Delta with Matt...there was some Loreal convention and this chick with 20 foils in her hair and a blck cape got on at the lobby level- I said " Are they filming a Star Trek Episode?" Matt was cracking up-
We Expected to hear a lot more "Aye's" only heard it twice from this cat Jeff and his wife who we met down in the 12th row. Guess that's another part of Canada! It was worth the trip up there specifically cause it'll cost less then if we just went over to AC...the Borgata rooms alone would put you in the hole. Thank you Pearl Jam & thank you innocent small town St Johns.

I was on Stone's side of the stage tonight (right behind Boom) and at the end of the 2nd Encore, someone pulled Eddie to the side and were pointing to their watch... Eddie looked pissed and went and told Jeff and Matt... I guess management REALLY did want them to get off stage.
Anyway... we got the setlist from the guitar tech after the show.. they cut out a LOT of songs.
Oceans, Last Exit, Animal, State, Hail Hail, Corduroy, Wishlist, Dissident, Deep, Even Flow, Insignificance, You Are, In My Tree, I Got Shit, 1/2 Full, Black, Go
Bee Girl, Man Of The Hour, (Off He Goes) , Crazy Mary, Crown Of Thorns, Alive
Light Years, Jeremy, RVM, Betterman, Fuckin Up, Rockin In The Free World, Yellow Ledbetter
Stupid fucking retards...no wonder nobody wants to go to NF...management like that is enough to keep even the most dedicated band away. I can't believe I missed Deep...Crown Of Thorns...Off He Goes...because of those asses.

Kitchener (09/11/05), Toronto (9/19/05), St. John's (09/24/05), St. John's (09/25/05), Toronto (05/09/06), Toronto (05/10/06), Pittsburgh (06/23/06)
First off both shows rocked as usual. The first show had a lot of energy from the beginning and kept up for the entire set. The second show was a gradual rise in energy that eventually exceeded Saturday night. Sunday was a little strange at first because they came out so strong (the first 9 songs is the best start I've heard/seen) yet the crowd wasn't as energized as the night before. I can attribute this to 2 things, Saturday night there was 10 club members occupying the prime seats to get the place rockin' as many have pointed out and also there was about 10 times more drunk people by the time they came out saturday. They stopped serving alcohol at 8:30 both nights.
But as Sunday night went on the place got louder and louder, I think what got everybody going was when Eddie was flashing the lights on the flags. From that point on it got louder and louder to a point where I couldn't hear him singing Jeremy, and RITFW was just ridiculously loud for such a small stadium. I was hoping that it would be apparent on the boot but you can't hear it from the recording so you had to be there.
For setlists I preferred Sunday even though it was cut short by the Mile one Management (Doesn't surprise me with their history). You could tell Eddie got pissed off cause he was making sarcastic remarks about it like telling the crew that they have to hurry up we don't have much time, and they hoped that the energy of the concert served the hockey team well. The hockey team needed ice for a monday morning practice. So according to what I've read we lost Oceans,Deep,Off He Goes,Crown of Thorns, RVM, Fuckin Up, and Yellow Ledbetter. The gem setlist everyone was looking for was planned but
never came to be.
I'm still happy that I got to go to both shows and am once again impressed with the enthusiasm of Newfoundlanders. I'm sure the band was impressed as well.
Everyone I talked to LOVED the 2 shows and isn't that what matters??? I was under the impression that you go to a PJ show to hear the band play not analyze every set list and shit on the ban for not playing "long enough".
Sorry about sounding a bit upset but sometimes people get too caught up in the technical and they don't see the forest for the trees (i.e. Pearl Jam actually coming to NL), Great shows!!! Great Energy!!!
I know this is irrelevant now that the show is over and done with, but was it Mile One's management that kicked them out? or Pearl Jam's management?
There's a reason for both sides:
PJ's management... The trucks having to catch the ferry the next morning.. (a good 10 hour drive from St. John's to Port aux Basques probably even longer where they're in 18 wheelers, where the majority of the trans canada highway is 2 lanes.
or:
Mile One's Management wanted them out cause the fog devils needed ice to practice on the next morning. I think this is dumb, because the crew has everything tore down and packed up by like, 2AM anyway (that's what time they left Halifax), and say if the hockey team skates at 9AM, that's 7 hours to take the floor off the ice. It doesn't seem like Pearl Jam would listen to the venue management anyway when it comes to curfue or pressure from the venue to plan for something the following day. The promotor paid full rent for Mile One, for the nights they were there, and it doesn't seem fair to boot the band out early in the night because the fucking fog devils need to have a "morning skate" for their game tonight. If they wanted to skate bad enough they could go down to memorial stadium.
And the most important point, it would probably become a Legal matter if Mile One kicked them out anyway.
Personally, I think it was just because they had to make it to the ferry.
And I would say Eddie would have had something to say if it was because the hockey team wanted to have a skate the next morning.
A few points...
no one sells penguins in st. john's, they're called puffins and they fly and look nothing alike. If you had bothered to look outside of the most touristy spots you may have seen other things more worthy of your greatness.
It's nice to know that we can come close to approaching the mediocrity of NYC, thanks for the compliment...
The only people that say "aye" anywhere in Canada I would suspect are either wannabe pirates, Irish ex-pats or working on a ship. Lots of people in the rest of Canada say 'eh' but not many do here.
Your condescending, full of worldly knowledge, attitude is refreshing and such a nice change from the general tone of these boards which tends to be conciliatory, friendly and open. Any time you feel like gracing us with your presence please come again, i'm sure we could all learn a lesson or two from your street wise, cosmopolitan attitudes...
*claps* Exactly what I wanted to say!

Like Eddie said on Saturday night, this place looks alot like West Seattle without the killing and the raping. I'll take my knitted sweaters, "penguins" and mediocre food any day
I personally loved both shows and am very greatful to have had them come here to play for us. It's something that I never thought would happen and am so happy that it did.
Yes, the set was a little shorter and they played some of the same songs both night but it was still an experience I'll never forget. I'm still in a state of shock from the whole thing and need time to come down before really talkin' about it.
Has anyone listened to the d/l for the show yet? What's it like?

I think its great the St John's people got their shows, regardless of how long they were, whether the band got booted early or not, whether the show was "as advertised" or not, or whether or not people who travelled quite a way to see the shows were satisfied or not. Take it this way: The band, almost immediately, decided to go with not one but two shows on the edge of North America, because you Newfies blew them away with your demand (and rightfully so... sounds like it's been a long time since you've seen a show of this magnitude). Shouldn't we as a whole commend rather than condemn the band for heading out there and playing a grand total of around 5 hrs of excellent music for what sounds like an overall enthusiastic crowd? Maybe people weren't as "in" to it the second night, maybe management (on either side) pushed the band out earlier than they wanted, maybe some other shit went down that the rest of us don't know about... the fact of the matter is Pearl Jam went literally coast to coast in Canada, something that rarely happens by any multi-national band as it is, and all the Newfoundlers (sp?) I've seen post have been nothing but extremely excited that their favorite band made it a point to visit their home town. Why can't everyone else be content with the fact that the band played as best as they could for as long as they could in a place where very few others even dare to venture?
I for one stand behind the St John's folks who have expressed gratitude to their favorite band for heading off to their little corner of the planet to play a show, regardless of the length. I'm glad you were all able to get the visit you all had looked forward to with such passion.

I find it funny that you only think Biancas was mediocre are best best the New York Times liked it enough to give it 4 1/2 stars. I guess your taste is better than the New York Times.

Actually ... they were in a hurry to get out of there.
Immediately after the band left the stage, the crew invaded the stage and proceeded to dismantle the bands gear.
2 of the 5 trucks used to transport the bands production had to be across the Island in 12 hours in order to get the Ferry to North Sydney, Nova Scotia on their way to Pittsburg. The other 3 trucks were going to Atlantic City and the 11a.m. departure (Ferry) was not an issue.
Be Safe
Dr.
Yeah that's true. Actually, Jill Vedder personally told us we couldnt go backstage because they werent even sticking around, they had to hurry out of there. I dont know about any of the management stuff, but I believe they stayed on stage as long as they possibly could without screwing up their next shows. Kind of a bummer because I was hoping to be on stage for R.I.T.F.W. oh well...
Both St. John's shows were amazing. I still haven't spoken to anyone who was there and thought otherwise (and it seems like everyone was there). The crowd was definitely a little more tame on Sunday, and I do believe that it has to do with the way the concert was added last minute. If Pearl Jam, or any other big band for that matter, decide to come to Newfoundland again, I don't see why they wouldn't just book 2 gigs anyway - it helps to make up for the extra cost of travelling here and the small venue, and I know for a fact that if everyone had known about the second show in advance, it would have been rockin twice as hard as the night before. I did notice people around me who weren't that into it, and gave me and my friend weird looks when we were freaking out after every song, or sayin stuff like "Is that In My fucking Tree? Holy Shit! In My Fucking Tree".
Anyway, I wouldn't take back either show for the world - the band seemed to enjoy themselves, and they looked way more animated than I've seen on video over the last few years. I got the impression that they were genuinely taken with the place, but maybe that's just wishful thinking.
And to those who were unimpressed with this little city - sorry, we ain't New York City, but there's beauty in simplicity too.
Has anyone listened to the d/l for the show yet? What's it like?
I've got both bootlegs and theyre AMAZING. "Black" has been my favourite song since it was released, and to now have a copy of it the first (and second) time(s) I heard it live is just outstanding. *goosebumps*
Some people were having problems with the downloads but I didn't have any trouble!
I don't mind a shorter show if it is a great show, which I am sure this one was. And shorter is sometimes better when i am at a show because i always refuse to go piss because i am afraid i will miss "No Way" or somethng

*clap clap clap* Thanks so much!! You summed up absolutely everything I felt about it! PJ came to the edge of canada and within ONE day of tickets going on public sale, they added a second show!! Stop trying to bring us all down, and take it for what it was... an absolutely amazing band coming to an absolutely amazing place to play some awesome fuckin music!! Kudos to you my friend
yeah, seems like the only reason there's no rapes or killings in St Johns is cause the women are so ugly-who'd wanna rape em- and your town is so broke from selling wooden "puffins" and hand crafts( that no one needs cause you're all selling them) that there's no money to kill for.
Not allowing water on the floor is a pretty stupid decision your government came up with causing people dehydration down on the floor up close...causing low energy-

Typical idiot american. I haven't even been to the Maritimes but i'm sure it would be better than walking down the street and seeing a dead bum getting peed on.

Were you hoping to get raped or murdered here? You're pretty cocky and arrogant, especially coming from a place like New York - maybe you're upset because you couldn't get anyone to sleep with you...maybe you couldn't get anyone to sleep with you here because YOU'RE too ugly...no wait, that's not it, we don't sleep with someone from another country after knowing them for less than a day, my bad. Come to think of it, maybe the only reason why you New Yorkers have to rape and murder is because you're too ugly for any of the women down there to want to sleep with you...no, that's probably not it either, again, my bad, it's probably that your women are actually intellengent human beings and you're just an asshole...no place or person is perfect to everyone, try having some respect, loser.
Not allowing water on the floor...(snip snip snip)... causing people dehydration down on the floor up close...causing low energy-
That happened to me...no fun.
And I really hope the rest of what you said in this thread was just said to get a rise from people. St John's is beautiful, there's no denying it. The shows were fantastic, there's no denying it. End of story.

Shows: 05/30/03, 09/02/05, 09/04/05, 09/05/05, 09/24/05, 09/25/05, 07/22/06, 04/02/08 (EV solo), 08/08/09, 08/23/09, 08/24/09, 09/25/09, 09/21/11, 09/23/11, /9/30/12, 12/02/13... many more to come!

Yeah that's true. Actually, Jill Vedder personally told us we couldnt go backstage because they werent even sticking around, they had to hurry out of there. I dont know about any of the management stuff, but I believe they stayed on stage as long as they possibly could without screwing up their next shows. Kind of a bummer because I was hoping to be on stage for R.I.T.F.W. oh well...
Cheers,
John
I've got both bootlegs and theyre AMAZING. "Black" has been my favourite song since it was released, and to now have a copy of it the first (and second) time(s) I heard it live is just outstanding. *goosebumps*
Some people were having problems with the downloads but I didn't have any trouble!
*clap clap clap*
Not allowing water on the floor is a pretty stupid decision your government came up with causing people dehydration down on the floor up close...causing low energy-

Typical idiot american. I haven't even been to the Maritimes but i'm sure it would be better than walking down the street and seeing a dead bum getting peed on.
08/02/07 - LOLLA!!!
And I really hope the rest of what you said in this thread was just said to get a rise from people. St John's is beautiful, there's no denying it. The shows were fantastic, there's no denying it. End of story.
ahhh ha ha ha ha!
