Are you KIDDING? Pearl Jam masters their CD's as loud as humanly possible, just like all the other modern rock groups. They need to turn the volume DOWN.
i don't agree. i think the last record sounded waaay to polished and overproduced. i doesn't sound live at all. smile, habit and red mosquito off no code sound live, i feel like i am in that basement with the band playing it when listening to it.
If we want things to sound more live and organic the artists and everyone involved with the production of albums need to realize that brickwalling the sound of your CD is not the way to go. By compressing everything into the upper headroom space of a CD they are essentially ignoring the full capacity of what a CD can do for audio. There's a reason why the earlier Pearl Jam albums sound so much more dynamic than their latest releases and this can better explain it than I ever could.
Jeff mentions in it that late this fall Pearl Jam plans on working on a new album. I'm assuming that's why this thread was started though. I guess I'm just a bit behind in the news of things.
I think Ghost is one of the worst songs off Riot Act. Riot Act is Pearl Jam's worst album. So that pretty much makes Ghost one of the worst songs they've ever written.
Probably the only song worse than Ghost...is Sweet Lew.
Sorry Jeff
I don't know about that, Riot Act has so much more depth than a lot of the songs off Vs.
Ghost is not that bad of a song...Cropduster is pretty innovative and Green Disease has a beat that that would make Vs sound better!
Too much Riot Act flaming on here, it is way too underappreciated.
songs that dont sound like anything they've done so far, i think pearl jam does this better than most bands. for years new bands have been chasing that pearl jam sound and pj are able to get away from the pack and sound great.
symbolically i like how avocado also meant that the avocado is poisonous to parrots and if wannabe-copy-cat bands decided to follow that sound they wouldve failed miserably.
i definitely think avocado was very different sounding than the earlier works, i dont get it when it is compared as a similar sound to the older albums, it is very different for me.
thematically and storywise there are a few similarities between songs, but sonically, most of the time they always give us something that is like a whole new landscape for us to discover, which i thank them alot for that.
any going back to an old sound would dilute the thunder of that sound. they know to forge ahead! im ready to scale the new landscape.

I think this should answer the question as to what is wrong with the album and its mixing/production/mastering:
