Totally. The last 3 albums have sounded pretty bad in my opinion.

See, I look at this aspect differently. To me, songs off Binaural and Riot Act sound so much richer and unique than anything off Vs. Like compare Dissident to Cropduster. The sound on Cropduster is so much richer, so much more going on. Dissident, on the otherhand, sounds like much more generic, almost like its flat in comparison.

All or None compared to Daughter...same deal. You can actually feel yourself in the room with the band during Riot Act and a lot of the tracks on Avocado. Of the Girl, Parachutes etc, compared to....anything off Vs, same deal.

In my opinion, Brenden O'Brien's work was at its best on Vitalogy and No Code, but Riot Act, Binaural and Avocado have really unique sound that will age much better than the earlier records.

I agree totally. I think the problem lies in the fact that the newer albums are mastered more agressively which gives them a "baked" and "undynamic" sound. The first few albums have a lot more dynamics and power. But as you said, the last few albums have a richer and more realistic sound. If only they weren't mastered so badly. (Even the vinyl stinks!)
  • Also wouldn't mind seeing a song about the Sonics leaving Seattle.

  • I don't have high hopes. Ninth album. How many bands can make a classic album this late in their career? I think we've heard every solo Mike has in him. I hope I'm wrong.
TOTALLY disagree with you. I have a very strong feeling that this next album is gonna be something really amazing and blow us all away!!! :D I am so excited about it......I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas Day to arrive :D

.....and as much as I wish they'd get on with it and hurry up and release it......I'm prepared to be patient and hoping they take the time needed to make sure it's awesome.

I hope they do another shit dirty 3/4 Blues jam like "1/2 Full" or "Red Mosquito"

Give Mike, Jeff, and Matt something to just stomp out.

    That would make me smile.

    Also...
I'd love to hear some fire back in balls of these guys. Eddie kind of got his fire back on the last record. But I want more of it on this new record. It's what Riot Act really missed; that urgency and fire.

I realize Eddie is like 40-something...2 kids and all...But I fucking love it when he loses his shit and fucking rips his lungs out.

Angry Eddie always makes for good music.

Maybe bring Dave A back for like 1 song so he can piss Eddie off again :)

So what direction would you guys like to hear for the new pj album? Personally I wanna see 'em bring back the codas from no codes, and just jam a bit more then usual and mix up the song structures. I could see them going in quite a few different directions though.

id love to see stone take over writing a lot of the music.

Word! I also agree with idea of another Bluesy 3/4 jam song...those are always great (although it took me a while to get 1/2 Full)

I'm excited about Brendan coming back, granted Vs. does sound a bit hollow these days (REMASTER) but seeing that No Code and Yield were the last 2 albums he produced fully, I'm very excited.

something different from anything else theyve ever done

    ding ding ding!
  • I'd like to hear the sound of Riot Act with Brendan's take on it. That would be stellar.

Riot Act is now my favorite sounding vinyl. I don't hear any problem with the mastering.

Deep is in the same vein as RM and 1/2 Full. That style sounds awesome. I like how Ed added the "WHAT THE FUCK?" part to 1/2 Full during the recent tour, too.

I love that part too. Especially on the Easy Street CD. Just a ripping great version of that song.

Deep is another one...Great feel to that song.

  • I'd love to see some longer songs making the album, like 6 minutes or more with several different arrangements thrown together for an epic experience. That or anything they feel like putting on the new album would suit me just fine :)
  • to whoever it was that said "something different than anything they have ever done", i hope you didnt mean it the way it sounded... lol anyways, i want, most importantly, a different set of drums from matt!!!! i cant stand the "dead", "boring" sound from his drums. birng back the maple drums matt!! also, i want loud, in your face guitars. something more like their earlier albums. the last album was definately better than the previous two, but i think their albums with brendan definately had their best sound, so i hope this is true again. i agree with an earlier post, no uke.. lol i liked the song selection from the last album. more up tempo than slower. easy to follow, nothing too off the wall. i definately dont want "experimental" or "jam" songs. leave that for the live playing. give us, ( i hate to even say this), a little more "radio friendly" album. you know we all crave that again... lol

Matts drum sound does need to be changed. His snare especially, it sounds so generic and boring. He needs to bring back his Ayotte set. Matts snare sound in the 2000 tour was god like, now it sucks.

Yeh, look, Dissident is probably the better song...but the sound and overall recording of Cropduster is better. In 20 years time Dissident will sound dated, In 30 years time Cropduster will fare better. That was my point.

Cropduster is a good song though, very underrated IMO

Fuck you. Cropduster is an amazing song, and every bit as good as Dissident. It doesn't surprise me though...Matt's songs are usually too complicated for people with smaller brains.

oh come on now !!! cropduster is a decent song, a little hard to get into. it has it's upsides and downsides for me, but it's nowhere fucking near the quality of dissident! too complicated for people with smaller brains !?! please go fuck yourself sir...

  • Ehm, dissident is like the peak of all that anthem rock that made the pearl jam-backlash so understandable. I hate it and can't find anything special about it. Ghost and Cropduster on the other hand are two good and underrated songs.

    Dissident>Crapduster

I think Ghost is one of the worst songs off Riot Act. Riot Act is Pearl Jam's worst album. So that pretty much makes Ghost one of the worst songs they've ever written.

Probably the only song worse than Ghost...is Sweet Lew.

    Sorry Jeff

Yep Ghost is horrendous..Boring riff, and Eddie sounds like he's half-assing his way through it, infact he sounds like that on the whole album.

    Dissident is great.

did you just tel me to fuck off b/c i think crapduster is shit? Sounds like you are the one with the little brain. What would you say if i told you" Get Right" is awful and "Help Help" is lame and that "ghost" is the poor mans "Hail Hail".
As much as there is to like about Riot Act there is much more to dislike especially when you consider what the band left off .

That's totally my problem with Riot Act. Eddie sounds like he was on anti-depressants or something.

As for songs like "Get Right", "Cropduster", "Ghost", "Help Help", and "Green Disease"...aside from Eddie's utter lack of conviction...It's the annoying reality that Pearl Jam does not sound anything like Pearl Jam on those songs.

They sound more like a Generic mix of music that they were likely listening to at the time of writing Riot Act. Alot of the styles employed on the above tunes do not suit the band at all.

I'm prepared for the flaming, but acoustic with more piano and strings. I for one would love a real mellow acoustic album followed by an acoustic tour.

more mike solos at the end of a song ala life wasted & severed hand from the last album.

hmm... I'd prefer Mike not going all crazy. Sorry, you'll probably hate me for it, but I don't really like his solo's :o

I'd like something in the direction of... nah, I don't really care. Maybe they should just do something like Binaural but then better!! (Binaural's my least fav album)

I never flame a fellow jammer! If Eddie came out with a nice acoustic album at some point I think that would be cool. As far as an acoustic tour and album by the whole band, I would much, much rather see it done the normal way.

  • The album name that ties it altogether into one legendary timeless, classic piece and maybe surpassing it's creater "Ten".

So what you're saying is that they should turn it up to ELEVEN?
