I agree with you to a certain extent ... where I have a problem with the current system is it allows some of these puke players to take runs and cheap shots at the league star players. So until the league is ready to admit that it's in everyone's best interest that the top players (all players) should be free from cheap shots and if they means stiff suspensions leading unto lifetime bans on repeat offenders then I'm all for it. Until the league is ready for that I'll always support the elimination of the instigator rule.

for sure - it's not just isolated ... i've always been appreciative of the role of fighting in hockey ... but my views have changed once i started understanding brain injuries and concussions ... i humbly suggest to all that support fighting in the nhl to read up on this stuff ... why are we protecting players from head shots in the game and hits from behind but don't care about guys punching people in the head with bare knuckles?

I agree to a certain extent ... I just don't believe the NHL is doing enough to eliminate head shots, cheap shots etc. I'm still in favour of eliminating the instigator rule, eliminate that rule and I think the game will open up ...

all i know is if you are trying to get rid of head shots because of player safety ... it makes no sense to continue to allow fighting ... i'm not sure what the stats are but i know of at least 3 or 4 concussions related to fighting ...

I don't think the concussion from that Montreal player was the fight ... more slipping and face planting the ice. If the NHL get serious and make a real determined effort to protect the players that people pay big bucks to see ... then indeed lets get rid of fighting. But I'd be pissed if I was a season ticket holder and some 4th line punk charged across the ice and took out one of my teams star players.

The thing with Yzerman is he didn't mind fighting when Probert and Kocur were patrolling the ice protecting his but.

So yes eliminate fighting ... then you must punish those cheap shot artist severely even if that mean lifetime bans at some point. I would like to see the 3 minute PP for 2 handed slashing as well, serving the entire 3 minutes.

I think the new helmet penalty in fights will help stop concussions and lower the percentage of fights overall.

Ill just say it. I like fights. They entertain me. The possibility of fights, and that anything can happen keeps me interested and tuned in. If fights were banned, I would probably not really be a fan of hockey anymore, at least probably watch <10% of the games I currently do. Probably why I attend and would rather watch CHL 100x more than NCAA.

These are grown men making the decision to do this and play in this league that allows it, and make good money. If they get concussed, I wish them the best, dont get hooked on pain killers and/or booze, and you should be fine. Oh well. George Parros is a smart Ivy-League educated man. He knows what he is getting into.
More importantly, the NHL itself wants to preserve fighting, and I believe most of the players support it. I do not like the fake outrage and disgust that occurs whenever someone gets hurt (especially from the aptly named Damien Cox).

I do agree the trend of the Super Enforcer, these 6'6" 250 lb monsters sucks, and their fights arent good. The first Orr Parros fight the other night was boring. Middleweights going at it is much better and you also seem to see far less injuries occur in those fights.

I know my friends and I remember more historic games for the fights that occurred in them than specific goals that occurred.

agreed. 8 out of 10 fights are nothing but pulling/yanking on your opponent's sweater, small jabs to the face while holding the sweater or punching the back of someone's helmet. both guys get worn out after 45 seconds, the ref separates the two and you spend five in the box. no issue with that.

but every now and again you do see fights that are haymakers after haymakers. while those are entertaining, you can see how dangerous they can be in some cases. but since these fights are in the minority, i don't think the league needs to take a super proactive stance against it.

i'd rather watch two guys be allowed to drop the gloves, dissolve their animosity with a 30/45 second fight instead sticking/slashing the guy in the back of the leg for the rest of the game when the ref's back is turned (which is the cheap retaliation you will see if fighting is banned).

i agree with you wholeheartedly ... i would prefer the cheap shots taken out first if anything ... i think they should make all play subjective to suspension upon video review after the game regardless if a penalty was called ... and put an intent to injure clause ...

While I don't necessarily think it should be banned, I think fights are such a weird and unnecessary component of the game.

Aside from the terrifying aesthetics of it (take a look at the absolutely murderous glee on the faces of fans as they watch), I'm not so sure it "sends the message" fans think it does. In other words, I think that in a game where checking is already part of it, fighting as a necessary or effective strategy is pretty overrated. Fans love it sure, but with all due respect to everyone here, that's not saying much at all.

In other news, Wild - Kings tonight. Pretty excited, although the Wild didn't make any dramatic moves this offseason. They lost some energy in Clutterbuck, but they might have gotten a big return in Niederreiter. They could run into a goalie situation very quick if Backstrom goes down (and Harding struggling with MS at any point). But we'll see. This is the year my hypothesis about Mike Yeo is really tested. His teams' trademarks so far have been (1) hitting a big wall midway through the year, and (2) atrocious power plays. Does it continue?

I like it, if only because it shows a continued commitment on the part of the ownership to go after and retain talent. In years past, the Twins and on occasion, other MN franchises, have had a tendency to develop players and then let them walk. It's really frustrating. Although Pominville was a trade pickup, it's nice to see them keep a guy they feel is a part of the future.

Word around the Twin Cities is that it's a sure thing for Vanek to sign here next year. As a University of Minnesota hockey season ticket holder, I'd love it for him to come play for the Wild. But I also can't figure out where that rumor started. It literally appeared in a sports columnists blog one Sunday, and from there, it's taken off. Even read it on CBS Sports.

It is common opinion that would be the most likely place. It is basically a connecting of the dots thing with his U Minnesota history, I believe he lives in Minnesota offseason, Pomminville is his buddy, and Minnesota should have the cap space.

I dont think its a slam dunk, as he could go for the biggest offer (from a decent team)

he is worth it though. great player, a list talent gets overlooked. if he played for the rangers...

the issue is that he plays his game and takes such a beating, he "slumps" for periods of time when he is playing very injured... then he starts missing games.

Like it only because the Red Wings should have always been in the East. Maybe a bit of a homer opinion, but I think the Wings may have won a few more Cups if they didn't have to fly back and forth to the West Coast for so many series.

Give me a break ... Now we have travel as reason we didn't win more cups :lol::lol:. Other teams travel more than Wings. Edmonton does more traveling and they won 5 in 7 years ... Other teams travel more as well. It not like these guys travel coach, shit they show up at the airport carry a little bag, fly first class to destination, land, get off plan with little bag, get on bus go to to 5 star hotel ..., yeah rough life.

No they didn't win more cups because they weren't good enough, just like the didn't best Chicago last year because they weren't good enough, just like Boston lost the finals because they weren't good enough ...

Personally I think the realignment might of had more to with saving the wings and Columbus money and it leaves the NHL With 2 less teams in the West ... So unfortunately that sets up possible expansion in the West (Seattle, Kansas City maybe Vegas).

Oh no, we were getting along so nicely on the MLB thread...

Edmonton won 5 of 7 when they had Gretzky, right? Probably the greatest player ever.

Who traveled more than Detroit over the past twenty years? Especially in the playoffs.

Never said they were better than the Blackhawks last year, surprised they made it past the first round. Never said they should have won them all over those years.

I realize I am not a fit athlete, but I sure was tired staying up past 1:00 am eastern time watching all those series against Vancouver, San Jose, Anaheim, etc. ;)

Lastly, I was saying it a bit tongue in cheek. Had a feeling you would respond as you did, that's why I asked to not have anything thrown at me.

We can get along fine ... the move is good for the fans and after all thats what should matter.
