definitely won't make it back ... they are saying 4-6 months recovery ...
on a similar note - bettman prefers World Cup vs. Olympic hockey ... i would have to agree except for the fact that right now, there are only about 5-6 countries that could host something like that ... and seeing as it would be played likely in the off-season - it doesn't really work logistically for fan participation ...

Didn't know they were going to perform surgery.

Too bad.Even though Canada is deep at center/right wing this is still a major loss.

Yeah he's done. Surgery is generally the quicker way to recovery, at least according to the doctor who dealt with me when I broke my tibia. I was in a cast for 13 weeks, not to mention the rehab afterwards.
Granted, Stamkos is prooooooobably in a little better shape than I am, but forget the Olympics.
How come everyone on here is so sure Stamkos will miss the Olympics .... team Canada hasn't ruled him out. No offense to anyone on here he but he gets super care ... privilege of being an elite athlete, plus he's in top condition.
I'm not ruling him out ...

I am not ruling him out but at the same time i think it will be very hard for him to come back to play in like 3 months.

Personally I rule him out based on my own experience with a broken tibia. I did acknowledge our differences in physical conditioning, however
The rod should help his recovery, but it is still a big injury.

you also have to think Stamkos is not going to risk his future earnings to rush back for this.
... he's a Canadian hockey player, trust me the thought of him not being able able to represent his country in hockey is agonizing to him ... and he my guess is he'll put every ounce of energy he has into getting back for the Olympics ... and he's fortunate that he has a GM that knows how much he wants to play and also knows the disappointment in not being able to represent your country, especially in hockey. I'mnot saying he'll be back, I'm just not ruling him out.

And he also has a GM who knows what it takes to come back from major injury/surgery.
So I'll back track a little and say he has a chance. This is something Stamkos has dreamed of for awhile.
He is an elite athlete and will be determined to make it.
Hope it happens. We could use him.

Very true about Stevie Y ... I hope he makes it back and definitely think he has a shot.
Did you see the the reporters scrum when they were asking Stevie Y. if he was playing in the alumni game? Does not sound positive, said he's only been in skates 2-3 times since retirement.

I saw the interview with Mickey Redmond and he said his schedule is pretty full with the World juniors and Team Canada stuff.
So I don't think he will be there.Yzerman always liked to stay out of the limelight.
Would be great to see him do it though.

The NHL announced its new Canadian television contracts Tuesday and stunned sports fans and media watchers alike by freezing the country’s largest sports specialty network out as an NHL rightsholder for more than a decade. The league instead has signed on with CBC and Rogers-owned Sportsnet in a landmark 12-year deal worth $5.2 billion.
TSN’s hockey insider Bob McKenzie hinted at the change late Monday (and you know this is one scoop the esteemed McKenzie wishes he didn’t have to report).
Pains me to report this, but NHL closing in on landmark CDN TV deal with two CDN networks. Many years (10+), many billions. #overandout—

The big winner here is clearly Sportsnet which, when it first launched as CTV Sportsnet in 1998, snared the NHL national rights away from TSN with a four-year deal (that contract essentially got the regional sports network on the air in the first place). A Sports Business Journal report earlier today also suggested dollars were a serious stumbling block when it came to a renewal with TSN, which currently pays $40 million per season and was said to be reluctant to swallow a huge increase.
Sportsnet also controls the puck when it comes to junior hockey in Canada — outside of the world juniors, that is, which remains one of TSN’s most valuable properties (only the Canadian Football League would rate higher. The 4.5 million average audience for Sunday’s Grey Cup says a lot there).
Simply put, this is a massive blow for a network which has built a large part of its operation around the NHL. The network still does have regional deals in place with the Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets, but to not have a presence with national games is nothing short of stunning after all these years.
Already lots of speculation out there that this was a CBC-Rogers power play against Bell. There had been plenty of talk for months that TSN, along with CTV, would make a major push to land Hockey Night in Canada, the venerable Saturday night tradition that has aired on the CBC since 1952 (and is the public broadcaster’s biggest revenue producer). Instead, it appears the tables have been completely turned.
According to the SBJ report, the new Canadian television contracts will include a new ‘Sunday Night Hockey’ franchise — similar to Sunday Night Football on NBC — that will air on Sportsnet, which would likely get its hands on several rounds of Stanley Cup playoffs as well. It’s also possible coverage of the NHL all-star weekend could shift from CBC to Sportsnet as part of the new deal. Other ancillary programming, such as the annual NHL draft, also falls under the league’s broadcast rights umbrella.
There are many questions worth asking about this whole thing, but here’s an interesting one — what becomes of the theme song TSN currently uses on its hockey telecasts? You know, that oh-so-familiar tune (often referred to as Canada’s second national anthem) that was part of HNIC for so many years, until a dispute with its composer saw TSN gets its hands on it. Not like they’ll need that ditty now.
Sucks to be a Canadian subscriber of cable/satellite because they'll use this to drive up the already overprice cable/sat fees Canadians pay, I do love it that TSN lost hockey, now maybe they'll sell the hockey night in Canada theme song back to CBC .

Hire LaFontaine as President of Hockey ops and Ted Nolan as head coach
I cant decide whether to cry or jerk off
Toronto 2011 night 2
Hamilton 2011
London 2013
He also has a "short list" for GM, which I am sure includes Jason Botterill and Rick Dudley. Then they will hire their head coach (Nolan is interim),
shocked when i read this this morning.
Always liked LaFontaine.
