Someone may have hit this ppint already but there's too much to back-read so Im just gonna say it.
My common opinion regarding the Influence of music before my time is... The experience of someone living through that time vs someone like us who grows up with the hype is going to be different. No matter how much you go back and listen to all of the music and gather your opinions.. It's not going to beat someone who lived through that era and gathered their opinion in real time.
I sure am jealous of those who experienced such an awesome time in music revolution and revelation!
i like ot say i was born a generation too late. i'd love to have been able to experience woodstock, pre-dark side pink floyd, the doors, the stones, dylan, etc. in person during the late 60s and 70s.
So what is their gift to us? What did their music change about our music?
As an example and NOT a comparison, here's my answer when asked to describe the Stones legacy to music: two white British kids who mail ordered Chess and Stax records from America in the mid 60s experimented and incorporated black blues into rock and roll to create a style of rock and roll that has become THE defining style of rock and roll to this day. By borrowing from the blues, they essentially saved a dying breed of music and reinvigorated interest in it worldwide. Along the way, they wrote some of the most recognizable rock riffs and songs in music history, rock or otherwise. And, to throw in a dash about popularity, they have written charting songs in their 50th year (2013).
That's how I describe their place in rock. I want to know what fans say about the Beatles, again not for comparison sake, but to understand.
Why is a backward recorded vocal evidence of genius and not novelty? What is special about them revolutionizing a medium that's now dead (the music video, which, let's face it, had about a decade of relevance) is indicative of greatness? What is their gift to generations of musicians after them? To innovate for the sake of innovation? Experiment technically?
I ask these questions earnestly and not to contradict. I do not dispute that on popularity alone, the Beatles are one of the all time greats. But I wonder sometimes if that popularity isn't causing fans to overstate their musical legacy...which was my entire point in the first place.
Hope you're not really worked up Ryan. This is a fun conversation.

Too many Sunday mornings listening to "Breakfast with the Beatles" on WXRT in Chicago listening with Terri Hemmert and Professor Moptop puts me firmly in the Beatles camp. Especially when the Rolling Stones' (& LedZep for that matter) claim to fame is essentially stealing someone else's music repackaging it, and exploiting it by selling it to a more mainstream demographic. I'd hardly put them on the same level of genius when you compare them to a group like the Beatles that had 3 very talented singer/songwriters (sorry Ringo - Octopus's Garden sucks.).
not to mention the actual songs they produced, which sounded like nothing else ever recorded, and gave all other musicians an idea of what could be accomplished in recorded music.
honestly, nothing i can say can really get that point to hit home unless you listen yourself, and not just to the beatles either. unless we spent hours and hours together listening and talking, me arguing for the beatles' impact and influences isn't going to change your mind. like i said before, i thought like you did once, that the beatles were overrated, and would argue the same to anyone. but as i've grown to love music and feel like i at least understand some of its history and context, i've had to concede i was wrong (which isn't easy for me, honestly!). you may never end up doing that, or maybe you feel like you already have enough evidence to know. if so, that's ok; we'll just have to agree to strongly disagree, and i'll reserve the right to post a facepalm whenever this topic comes up.
Hope you're not really worked up Ryan. This is a fun conversation.

Well again, see my post on the Stones "stealing" music. You could call it "stealing" or "repackaging" or whatever and I'd respond in kind that every sound came from somewhere else before it. Did Dylan steal Woody's sound? Etc etc etc.
Again,it comes down to taste. You claim the Stones writers aren't on par with the Beatles; there are plenty who'd state that the duo of Jagger and Richards is the best rock writing duo...ever. So it comes down to opinion. All I'm asking for is what is the objective statement of the Beatles legacy. Ryan's offered a few things. Popularity aside, what was their contribution?
