When he was talking about the record company saying the band needs to tour and make money. It was when he was in Montana. He followed up saying something like, "It doesn't matter because they've got the next new band in the pipe."

I could have had tickets to the twins game last night. When I realized they were playing the Yankees I realized it would be a certain loss and said no thanks.

Here's why shopping at local and independent stores is worth it:

A colleague/friend recently had her first child and she's now on maternity leave. We're both big readers, and so I was going to send her a few books while she's out. Against my better judgement, I bought one of the books off Amazon because it was dirt cheap. It was described as "new." When I received the book in the mail, it was definitely not new and had damage to it's spine.

So, feeling as though I was definitely getting my just desserts, I headed to Micawber's books, our local indie book shop, and one that I've purchased many books from. Hans (owner) was working, after grabbing a nice clean undamaged copy of the book off the shelf (a Dave Eggers book, by the way) to give to my friend, I walked to the register and said to Hans, "forgive me booksmith, for I have sinned." He laughed and I explained what had happened with Amazon. He smiled, and told me to hang on for just a minute. He went in the back and came up front again with a hardcover copy of Dave Eggers' newest book. He explained that because Dave Eggers had cancelled a book signing there last March, he sent the store a bunch of signed copies to sell. I looked at the book, thinking he was just showing it to me, as I was buying another Eggers book, and I told him how cool it was that he got a signed copy, because I myself actually collected signed books.

He then gave me another smirky, knowing look and asked me, "any other kind of books you collect?" I told him I collected lots of stuff, but mostly sports and music, or books about sports and music. Hans then pulled out from the shelf behind him a mint copy of a 1941 baseball book Lou Gehrig: Pride of the Yankees, and says, "there. Keep both of them." I protested and objected, feeling very much like an unworthy penitent, but he insisted. He handed me his card and told me that if I ever needed help finding a book, shoot him an email and he'll find it. Embarrassed by his generosity, we eventually agreed that I would take the free books, but that I was buying two others to square up with him.

I asked him why he gave me those books, especially when I just told him that Amazon was my first choice. He said "you could have gone anywhere else. You could've gone back to Amazon for a replacement. You could've went to Barnes and Noble. But you came here. And that means a lot. Young people shopping here means a lot."

As we left the store, my wife and I shook our heads, remarking how in what odd ways life can teach you lessons about how to spend your hard-earned money and reaffirm good choices while distinguishing them from bad ones. I don't shop at indie stores because I expect to get something free; I shop there because most are owned by people who value their customers enough to make someone's random and humble trip to a bookstore a memorable experience.

So there you go. Shop local everyone. http://www.micawbers.com/
