Bump in honor of the family dog who had to be put down last night. Watching something you love die before your eyes is so painful.

sympathies to you. I've had to do that very thing with my own dog (which was the family dog, but she was MY dog). I still remember it very vividly, and that was 12 years ago!

aw, sorry to hear that. i'm sure it was the right thing to do. my thoughts are with you.

i'm a cat person (i love dogs, too, i just won't ever have one) and have had to put 2 of them down over the years. the first one was old and had a good life, so it was a little less upsetting, but the second one was only 5 and we had no idea what had happened to get to that point. the vet even offered and paid for an autopsy because he was curious, and that was inconclusive. that one sucked hard. he had one of those awesome personalities that you just don't see as often in cats. watching him pass was one of the hardest things i've had to see. but i'm glad i was there for him.

Sorry to hear that e-flow82. I am also a cat person, and I really dread the day when we have to cross that bridge.

That would be really rough to lose a pet without reason. Mine was only 5 as well.. but the dang cancer got her (I blame chem-lawn!). Having a pet live a long good life is much better, but even then it's so hard. I have two gals now that are getting up there and I can't bear to think whats going to happen in a few short years. ugggg.. almost makes you think it's not worth having a pet in the first place, but then you realize the good times definitely outweighs the pain of losing them.

Thanks for the condolences. She was a 13 year old miniature schnauzer named Ellie. Very sweet and loved everything except bikes. :-) We have so many pictures, but I'm not ready to look at them yet. Hopefully she is someplace better having a great time chasing squirrels and playing fetch.

PJ please play Minnesota in 2014.

I read somewhere on the board the other day that after Europe the band isn't planning on doing many more shows. Again, this was someone who had supposed connections. Take that for what it's worth.
Hopefully he or she is wrong.

in any case, please play MN in 2014.

I take those types of things with a grain of salt. For every person who's been right in their predictions (I remember the guy saying PJ20 would be in Alpine was spot on, even got the date), there's someone who's completely wrong (you can find plenty of those threads).

Maybe it's true, maybe not. Keep in mind, the only way that person's connections could be reliable is for them to have heard or seen something from the people who matter (i.e. Kelly Curtis). That's pretty unlikely that (a) the person's connection is anyone with any real information and (b) if they do have a reliable connection, that said connection has any reliable information this far out (especially with all the other things PJ/EV have going on in the first half of 2014).

There are a lot of people who claim to have a "connection" (like me - I know the guy who opens and closes the door to the Wild locker room - you can see him on TV during player interviews) but in reality, the person only works at _____ venue or with _____ blank company and who may or may not ever have any real information. So far, my "connection" has never had any inside information about anything, other than whether or not Zach Parise is a nice guy. I also have a friend who knows someone at LiveNation, and he wasn't able to get much information about the 2013 US tour at all, even just prior to them releasing dates.

So again, I'd take it all with a grain of salt. Unless the person's connection is the band's booking manager (who might not even know the bands plans for fall 2014 yet), I wouldn't worry too much about it.

To further ease your mind, consider the only hard "evidence" we have: Matt took an entire YEAR off from Soundgarden because of commitments to promoting Lightning Bolt with PJ. As far as I can tell, PJ/EV are booked for January - February of 2014 (PJ-BDO shows, EV-Aus shows), and June - July 2014. In short, four months out of 2014.

Would Matt take off a whole year from Soundgarden for PJ if the only conflicts were June and July? Soundgarden is playing Lollapalooza in March and April, PJ isn't booked anywhere.

This is all a long way of saying don't worry too much about it yet. There's still more reason to think that PJ will play additional dates somewhere than not. I could be wrong, but like I said: look at what we do know. I think it's very unlikely that Matt would take an entire year off from Soundgarden to play with PJ if there were only 4 total months of PJ/EV shows. I'm guessing either a short US spring tour (10-12 dates, April - May?), or fall tour (15-20 dates, October - November?).

I heard Siren this morning and before they played it the DJ said "hopefully this band will be announcing more North American dates soon". What does this mean? Probably nothing, just a DJ making a personal statement, but you never know... gives me hope :)

It's the Friday before Christmas, and so it's slow. Let's talk music.

Your Five Favorite Bands and An Album That Makes You Include Them (and why):

    1. The Rolling Stones - Exile On Main St.: It features everything about the Stones that make them the greatest rock band ever. Chaos, love, blues, Keith at his best. The album is sort of a trendy pick in recent years, but with the historical background of how it was made and how well so much of it has aged, it's really hard not to agree with it's recent praise. And while there isn't a band that gets as much love, attention or money ( ) from me than Pearl Jam, musically, the Stones get the top nod. They just have a bluesy groove that resonates so deep with me and I don't think any other band has ever quite captured that same sound.

    2. Pearl Jam - Ten: So much of what's great about PJ live comes from this album. Angst, enormous guitars. There might not be a better feature of Ed's voice than in "Release." I've made the claim in the past, which I still stand by, that if you don't fist-pump, sing-along, or rock-the-F-out live to whatever they play off this album, you're lying. ;)

    3. Rage Against The Machine - Evil Empire: While I was listening to a lot of music in 1996, this was the first album that really took over my brain. I'm always skeptical about claims that - in the grand scheme of things - a band is anything more than a band, but RATM may be the closest thing to a "band that changed my life." I was 13 when this album came out, and I can trace so many things about me today, 17 years later, directly to this album. The direction my political views took. My interest in harder rock. Listening to more hip hop. My love of three quarter length t-shirts.

    4. Neil Young - On The Beach: The title track alone would've captured my musical attention. Moody, simmering, you can feel the death of the 60s even in 1974. I had always enjoyed what I knew of Neil (the "PJ hits," his more commercial stuff etc), but this album really planted a seed in my mind and cemented my appreciation and love of his work. The album is a great composite of Neil's catalog - some more accessible stuff like "Walk On," "See The Sky About To Rain," with the brooding urgent tracks like "Revolution Blues" and "On The Beach." Like other seminal singer-songwriters, Neil wrote what he wanted. The result of course is some absolute gems. What more can you say about the guy's career?

    5. Bear Hands - Burning Bush Supper Club: there has been no album that's received as much continuous play in my car, headphones or on vinyl in the last 3 years. I can't really say much more. Release your new album already!

    Now you go.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here. Picking a Floyd album is a tough chore. But I usually default to Wish You Were Here, and I'll do so here. For an album whose genesis involved the band experimenting with playing random household objects, I do think it is their best, most cohesive yet exploratory record as a band. And though he was the main creative force by this point, Roger Waters hadn't quite wrested control of the musical side of the band yet, and so David Gilmour and Richard Wright got to lay down some of the most sublime music ever put to tape in Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

Pearl Jam - Yield. No Code was a big disappointment. Yield was everything I loved about the band that I thought we'd lost. It's funny to look back and remember that only a couple years had passed between the release of these two records, but at the time it seemed like forever. Without Yield, I'm not sure I go for the ride I've been on the last 15 years.

Those two bands are easy answers, it's picking the remaining three that is the real challenge here...

Johnny Cash - Unchained. I hated country music. Johnny Cash helped me to realize I only hated modern country music. I think he did, too. I am not a religious man, but Cash's performance on Spiritual is the strongest argument I've ever heard for putting my faith in Jesus.

R.E.M. - Automatic For The People. This is a perfect record. I don't know that I would ever say that about any Pink Floyd or Pearl Jam album.

The Black Angels- Passover. Their first record is still their best, but they're all good. There's only one other currently active band whose shows I get more excited to see than the Angels, and you can probably guess who that is.

Completely agree. Yield is a classic.

On the topic of No Code,I think it is vastly overrated by PJ fans, to the point where some will claim that Ten, Vs., Vitalogy, or Yield are below it. To each his own when it comes to musical taste, but I definitely wonder if there's a little bit of - dare I say, posing? - involved when an album as uneven as No Code jumps to the top of the list when compared against other PJ albums. (To my ears, claims like that always reeked of cred-wary hipsters discussing indie albums; "their [old stuff][b-sides][side projects][collaborations][unreleased barely audible screechy experimental basement recordings] are better!" ).

But hey, it's art. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. No Code is a great album, but I think it's overrated among fans, at least when compared to the band's first 4 efforts of the 90s.

    Good list Ryan.

    Bump.
  • I love lists.

    1. Yield. Pearl Jam.
Tracks one through seven would probably make the setlist, if I was writing it for the next St. Paul show. It's incredible. While Ten, VS. and Vitalogy all have the classic Pearl Jam sound and what probably drew most of us to them, I feel like Yield is a little bit more focused and grown up sounding. Like a rock band that knew what they wanted the album to come off as. I love it. Still blown away I heard "Push Me Pull Me" at PJ20. I remember preparing Diddy for that epic weekend and told her, "Don't worry about this one [Push Me Pull Me]" Then it happened. Incredible.

    2. Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not. The Arctic Monkeys.
Holy balls. What a debut album and maybe the only other band that rivals my obsessiveness of Pearl Jam. (I am also in their fanclub and have tried to post on their board. It's not as organized  ) I bought this album the day it came out after reading about how they were only 18 and were basically huge in the UK. I found an amazing rock n' roll album at a time when the radio seemed to be lacking in new rock bands. They could play half of this album live every night, and it would kill. And they do ;). I don't think there's another band since them to debut with such a focused album as these guys. They've only gotten better and basically have reinvented themselves album after album. They are only 26 for crying out loud! A group of lads that all got instruments for Christmas so formed a band. Their other buddy wanted to be in the band so bad, he had to take the only instrument left, drums. Classic rock n roll story.

    3. Left of Self-Centered. Butch Walker.
I was downloading all kinds of music back in 2000. Illegally of course.Trying to figure out what I liked because me being me, I had to hear EVERYTHING. I downloaded some sort of radio performance by Jimi Haha and the lead in said he wrote the song with Butch Walker, who is amazing. So, I looked him up. And low and behold, I found my next favorite artist to go nuts over. This album is written, performed, recorded, produced, and released by Butch Walker. All by his lonesome. Get the Self-Centered bit now? ;) Either way, this album has some of the most incredible rock grooves and the live performance is where I was hooked. I saw him at the Ascot Room for $6. Some of the themes and ideas ingrained themselves in my brain and I've tried to remember what it was like seeing him and hearing him talk about being yourself and doing it your way. He has never let me down 13 years and ten amazing shows later! I don't want to be the one who does everything like I'm told to. Maybe a mantra that's gotten me in a trouble once or twice, but has helped me more than I probably realize.

    4. Bootleg Series Volume 8: Tell Tale Signs. Bob Dylan.
I know this is cheating. But I don't care. I've never loved Dylan albums off the bat. I've always needed time to digest what I'm hearing and usually it takes work for me to get into a Dylan album. I love moments on Dylan albums. Two or three tracks in a certain order. Never have loved an album back words and forwards by him before I bought this one. Admittedly, I bought this to collect it. But, this one grabbed me. If I can be even more specific, disc one is the one that gets the most play in my car, room, ipod and head. It's full of bsides and alternate takes of songs from a certain period. It's the period right before his voice turns guttural to the point of parody of himself almost. I love his gruff voice. He sounds like someone worth listening to. Like he's going to blow your mind with a lump of knowledge or put something in perspective. "The wisdom the old can't give away" is how I feel about his vibe and tone on this album. The height of this album is three songs. Mississippi, Red River Shore, and Born in Time. I could listen to those three songs forever. Mississippi is perfect. If you take anything away from this post, and I assume no one will read all of this, look up these three songs. It's worth it.

    5. Anodyne. Down and Above.
This is my favorite album by my favorite local band. Vant will tease me but in the early 2000s I thought the local scene of hard rock bands that all harmonized the vocals were the coolest thing ever. I thought the scene was going to blow up. I was probably just wishing to be part of the next big thing. Probably likened it to the Seattle scene in my mind. Either way, this is the best album to come out of that scene. It's polished and tight. Every song counts and has something to add to the over all feel. The best song is "Son of a Gun." The song is a story about a son rejecting his father's lifestyle revolving around guns. The cool part is the three guys in the band all sing a different perspective of the story. Ian is the narrator. Dave is the dad. Zach being the son. It's really cool. They are awesome live and if they EVER play shows around here, I am there. :)8-)

    There's my list. :D

Is anyone excited for the mark lanegan anthology coming out in January? It was twelve unreleased songs. It might as well be a new album for him.

I would explode if Ed and Mark did a duet...especially in MN. :D I would settle for just PJ though. 8-)
