The Frames: Burn The Maps & listen to the soundtrack for "Once." if those don't convince you, then it's not your thing. 8-)

even on an Acoustic guitar. wow! Only seen him open for EV, but loved how he tagged a few lines of "smile" into Astral Plains (song by Van Morrison). Awesome set. I'm only familiar with Swell season right now, but will check out these other recommendations in the near future.

Glen and Ed's voices compliment each other so much when they sing together, it just makes the show even better. 8-)

  • I'm sure Mr. Hansard is thrilled to have new fans jump on the bandwagon. He's been around for ages and just keeps getting better. We posted this video after seeing Swell Season at the Tower in 2008. It was a truly great show ... http://youtu.be/O_GAET5sspY

Glen's unreal. I LOVE the Frames. and I'm just here to show the man some love. The videos of him busking around Dublin are flat-out amazing. Seen him live twice myself now and he's the man. Also, teared up a bit during Falling Slowly with Ed at PJ20. Plus, he can cover Van Morrison like no other. His "Into the Mystic" cover is UNREAL. My rambling should probably stop now. haha :D

    Amazing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b56C57Z5rMc&feature=related
  • Thanks for the links to Glen's PJ20 sets. Very appreciated. Also, I'd like to throw in my two cents and suggest Set List by the Frames as a starting album for listening to anything Glen. The album is completely amazing and kind of an equivalent to LOTL in the PJ catalog.

So, the movie Once is being turned into a live show in New York, playing downtown at the New York Theatre Workshop starting in November. I think they will do the film and music justice. There are a lot of very talented and creative people involved with the production...

I'm definitely a Glen fan now & it was SO cool to see him at PJ20. :) He is such a strong musician & performer, HUGE live! I watched Once & bought the CD a few months ago after listening to his stuff from Ed's tour so yeah great to see him at PJ20. :)

Ooh & thanks for the links to his shows at PJ20. Cool. :)

e.t.a. Anyone got his setlist from the PJ20 shows for the downloads? TIA

edited again to add: no worries, google revealed it's on setlist.com. :)

  • I was fortunate enough to see Glen in a tiny venue in Amsterdam at the weekend and thought I would share my review and pics:

A Man, Two Guitars, & Red Lights

Nestled alongside red neon lit windows filled with woman blatantly offering their wares, Bitterzoet (which means Bittersweet in Dutch) is a small club in Amsterdam offering intimate (but not that kind!) musical experiences for indi music lovers.

For the 350 people lucky enough to get a ticket to Glen Hansard's sold out show on Saturday night, they were treated to a close-quarters exchange with Ireland's most beloved musical gypsy.

Oliver Cole (another Dublin native) ably opened the proceedings and was well received despite having to fight the noise of those still entering and general bar chatter. At one point he produced a suitcase on stage filled with copies of his first album (We Albitri) and implored the crowd to lighten his touring load and buy a copy.

Just after 9pm, the beenie-clad Hansard stepped on stage and immediately launched into an acapella rendition of traditional Irish ditty Spencer the Rover. Minds were immediately focussed and all noise and chatter in the room ceased leaving only the intermittent sounds of the clinking of glasses by the bar staff - evidence surely of the esteem in which Hansard was held by his audience.

The Frames track Plateau from their 1999 album Dance the Devil then officially opened proceedings with Hansard thereafter switching between his Guild Starfire and his excessively beat up Takamine to showcase acoustic versions of songs from his bands The Frames and The Swell Season and also some newer material which, it is hoped, will appear on his forthcoming solo album due for release in early 2012. He attracted giggles from the crowd early on as he joked that he found the Red Light location of the venue interesting, but that it had allowed him to spend a couple of enjoyable hours earlier that day in the company of a nice Eastern European woman called Svetlana - you can't say the man doesn't share with his audience!

All jokes aside, Hansard spoke emotionally at various times throughout the night of his personal connection with Amsterdam and the Netherlands and inferred that the ghosts of memories past seemed to be invading his consciousness that day - a reference it seemed to good friend and fellow Dublin busker Mic Christopher whose accidental death in 2001 in Groningen deeply affected Hansard and his cohorts.

Of particular note in the almost 90 minute main set were a raucous version of Perfect Opening Line described as a song of envy and admiration, new song It's Coming (which Hansard advised he had been working on that very day) and the double-shot of Underglass and Suffer in Silence from The Frames' 2004 album Burn the Maps.

The encore commenced with a collective 'ahhhh' for crowd favourite Falling Slowly, followed by the off-mic Say It To Me Now which was delivered with enough gusto to break a string on the trusty Takamine and force some subsequent crowd participation via an acapella version of Daniel Johnston's Devil Town while the string was replaced.

During the encore Hansard commented that he had not been able to hear any of opener Oliver Cole's set as he had been back stage 'being nervous', and he accordingly invited Cole back to the stage for an encore performance of his song 'Don't You Know'.

The evening came to an end all too soon with a duet by Hansard and Cole on the traditional Irish standard 'The Auld Triangle' and the mostly Dutch crowd expressed their appreciation sincerely by singing along loudly at the well-known chorus.

I admit I suffer from a fairly extensive objectivity problem when it comes to Glen Hansard but again on Saturday night I found myself marvelling at his ability to take me to places in my heart and soul with just two guitars, an amp and some red lights.

    Hartstikke Bedankt Glen!

Hey gang! Not sure if this has been posted here, but here's a really cool hour-long documentary on Glen's main band The Frames. Enjoy.

"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

    -Tom Waits
  • And ya'll should check out our Oliver Cole who supported Glen in Europe. He's a pal to a lot of us in Ireland, and a fabulously talented musician. If you like genius pop gems in the vein of the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Weezer, and Elliott Smith, Oliver Cole is your man! YouTube him, there's quite a bit there. And he's a funny fucker, too!

As a Frames fan since 2002, I can tell you Dance the Devil is good. All their albums have good songs, but they're all about the live really. Setlist is the best album-basically a greatest hits live, recorded over 4 nights, of which I was at them all!
