Moving to Canada...

I'm from South America, but i decide to move to the great USA 5 years ago, the reason was 70% because my country (Venezuela) was getting worst and worst (i don't care what Sean Penn says) and 30% because i wanted to see Pearl Jam live as many times as possible... Ok i know it's weird but like many of you pearl jam's music means a lot since i was a teenage boy back in the early nineties, but anyway now i'm moving again, not because there's anything wrong with the USA, i love this country as my own i could give my life for this country... but now i have to move to Canada...

I know there's a lot of Pearl jam's fans there and as "a soon to be one of you" there i ask you:

Is Canada a great place to live (as i heard)?
Which city would you recomend me to live?
As a Pearl Jam fans could you tell me any great story of Pearl Jam in Canada?

Please let me know as many things of Canada as you can!

It's goal of mine to live out there for at least part of my life. Not sure how easy it is for a couple of Brits to get in though!

It is a bit more expensive ....

If you need a job you should be able to get one in a day ...

not to sound naive, but being from Venezuela i assume you are used to the heat.
The west coast (lower mainland part) is generally the most mild part of the country, though we get a lot of rain. If you like mountains, the ocean, outdoors etc I'd definitely recommend moving to somewhere in British Columbia (yah i'm biased of course cos that's where i live)

BeerBaron is right, Alberta is where it's at if you wanna take advantage of a good job market. I guess it depends on your situation.

I've never been to the maritimes (PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia etc) but have always wanted to go. I hear the people are friendliest there...

it really depends on your situation and the type of person you are. we're a huge country and hugely diverse as well.... the country has so many different parts and elements its crazy. :)

why do you have to move from the us?

    Welcome!!!

    You will love it here.

Canada is a very diverse country. But based on the fact that 30% of your reason for leaving S.A. in the first place was to see Pearl Jam live as many times as possible, I would suggest moving somewhere in Southern Ontario (near Toronto). Toronto is an amazing city and is within a decent drive to many major US cities.

Calgary is booming right now. I hear it is a really nice city (never been there myself) but it is VERY expensive. Vancouver is nice too but many people would suggest to live in the surrounding areas (interior BC?) as opposed to Vancouver itself. Montreal is a great city too, but I assume you don't speak french which can make it difficult at time (although most people do speak English).

    Hope that helped.

    Where are you considering?

i don't think you ahve to go as far as the interior... i live about 40 minutes out of the city and its pretty average.

I forgot to mention the island! Horse2345 is right... sort of. Maybe not the best place, but Victoria is cool. If you dont mind smaller towns i'd def suggest the upper half of van island :):)

but vancouver island is fucking magnificent!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

oh and hey, don't forget... vancouver is closest to seattle if you're looking for that pearl jam fix... and we're a decent drive to the gorge! ;)

    I can't offer you any help...but I have a question...

You said that you "have to move" to Canada...but yet you can pick where you live?

    How is that?

  • Well, if I ever get there. I'm going to Vancouver. They have good sushi there, Amongst other attractions :)
I'll Ride The Wave Where It Takes Me
  • Every part of Canada has something different to offer.

Toronto is our biggest city, and probably has the most overall to do, plus if you want to travel following Pearl Jam that is your best bet with a lot of big US Cities(New York, Boston etc) that PJ play in close proximity.

Montreal is our nicest city and the language barrier shouldn't be a problem, they speak mainly french but there is lots of english speaking people there,

Calgary is the best for job markets, it costs a little more to live there but you make more money so it balances out. Also up North in Alberta in the Edmonton area are a lot of oil rigs, very, very ,very good money.

If you like hot summers with nothing but beaches, bbqs, and a plethora of hot women then I recommend the Interior BC (Kelowna and Penticton),unfortunately there is nothing to do in the winter and there isn't much of a job market.

Vancouver is the place to be if you are a nature lover, bordered by pristine mountains and the pacific ocean, it is a beautiful place to live, i have lived here my entire life and i still find it stunning, it is also consistently voted the nicest place to live in N.America and one of the 3 nicest cities to live in the world, if you can deal with a lot of rain especially in the winter and early spring then it is the place to be, you can ski and golf in the same day in the winter, plus its close to Seattle, enough said.

    Hope this helps.

Mmm why i have to leave my beloved U.S.A.?

Well to be honest i'm here as a political asylee or at least trying to be one, the US goverment has been keeping me as a "man with no land", i'm still waiting for the aproval of my case but 5 years later and i'm still waiting, i don't know if the US goverment is going to grant my petition for asylum or not, i can live here and work, but i can't buy a house, i can't keep studying (i'm an architect), because of the cost as a foreigner are to high, plus i can't leave the country and see my FRIENDS (they all leave Venezuela for the same reason) outside the US until they aprove my petition... and i can't wait for an answer anymore, i'm 30 years old, but i' not getting any younger.

Well i thought it's time to move on, i heard so many wonderful things about Canada that i decide to give it a try, and don't need to be a asylee in Canada i can apply for Visa as a Skilled worker in Canada and be a Canadian in 3 years plus i could see my friends and family as soon as i move there.

    Any other question? :)

well i guess the best questions would be what appeals to you most about where you live...

    cost of living
    job market

go east, no matter what the westerners say. You can a high paying job on any wharf in nova scotia, the place is clean and the people rock, plus it is not overcrowded and the cost of living is so low its hard to fathom (must be the equalization payments). I feel the west was the place to be 10 years ago but is getting too trendy for its own good, and bc is the la of canada, a lot of flaky pastries

well raising a family is good anywheere in canada i'd assume...
houses are expensive in the west but if you don't want a mansion or millionaire style property parts of bc are still somewhat reasonable i assume (never had to buy a house myself)
i'll be your friend if you move to vancouver! hahaha
we're close to seattle and pearl jam generally play vancouver every 2-3 years, but the west coast is spread out and therefore its easier to see 3 or 4 shows at once in a denser area like toronto/new york/boston/detroit
i'm not sure how it is for jobs to do with architecture in bc. i'm going to SFU right now and thinking about architectural design though! i know that there is a lot of development here (a lot has to do with the olympics in 2010)

I'm from Ottawa and I love it. I hear it's a great place to raise kids...one of the safest cities in Canada. Growing up I thought it was boring and complained a lot, but a city is what you make of it, and there are tons of things to do here. No excuse not to be active, tons of parkways, bike paths, etc. You also have beautiful hills and thousands of lakes at your disposal on the Quebec side. Culturally diverse. The job market is also very good, I've never had a problem getting a job. It's a government town so that's where the boring side comes in, but it's steady work.

Speaking as someone who goes to a lot of shows, we get our fair share of bands who come through here, but I'm 2 hours from Montreal which is an amazing city in itself, and 5 hours of Toronto so I can't complain.

Summers are pretty decent here, mostly hot and humid, but if you don't like winter then go out west cause the winters here will change you.

Your close enough to some major cities for PJ tours. There's Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Albany within a 6 hour drive, and the rest is up to you.
    Good luck :)

    Good luck :)

if i were to move to ontario, i'd never move to toronto. ottawa is where i'd go for sure... i was there about 4 years ago... i loved it.
