  • Just got back to DC. A few thoughts...

Glen's opening set was great, especially Lucia and Buzzin' Fly.

Ed made a comment about the Spectrum show on Halloween 2009, and a lot of people started cheering because they were there. He looked out into the crowd and said something like, "Oh, thanks for that...you know, I didn't quite recognize you before, but now I remember you."

The slower version of Speed of Sound was really great. Long Nights was so good to hear after not seeing it on the last tours. Listened to much of that one with my eyes closed.

As everyone's been saying, the cover of Drive All Night was probably the most emotional moment I've ever experienced at a show. I never really got into Springsteen and had never even heard that song, but there was a lot of eye-wiping going on for a full 10 minutes. So incredibly beautiful, I could hardly take it. Here's a video of The Frames doing that song with Jake Clemons at Radio City, and of course it's not the same without Eddie or the weight of Clarence's recent death, but it'll give those of you who missed it a good idea of how it all went down: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHpzEUcy_20.

Falling Slowly...I need video, seriously. Just exquisite. More eye-wiping. I think they sounded tighter on the harmonies tonight than they did on their first attempt.

Having been at the Spectrum show on 10/31, the visit from Charlie DeFabio was a nice treat.

Ed's story about when he wrote Light Today was pretty amusing... he said he took a walk at about 4am in Hawaii because if he sat still, the room was spinning. He said something about how it happens sometimes when you're doing great and feeling good and then you take that one last drink, and then you don't feel so good anymore. He recorded the song on a voice recorder as he was walking. He also mentioned that it would be nice to get the ceiling lights back on during this next song (they look like stars), and nothing happened...then about 20 seconds into the song, they came on. Nice moment all around.

Ed made a comment about how some of the songs he was doing were really depressing, and that if there were people in the audience who couldn't relate to them, he was genuinely happy for them. Then he said something like, "But, just know that it's coming. It'll happen. I hope." Ha ha.

Super jealous of the people who got picked out for front row seats. I was in the Loge row FF on the end, and we walked up to the railing when Hard Sun started. Looking out onto the orchestra crowd and being able to stretch out a little more and show Ed some love was fun :D

Sat next to some nice people in Loge FF, with the exception of The Most Annoying Girl in America, who was in front of my friend. I think I'm going to do a PSA, telling parents to give their children more attention when they're younger so that they don't grow up to act like assholes at concerts. Seriously, this chick was dancing like a stripper at every possible opportunity, and looking around to make sure people were looking at her (they weren't), and annoying the shit out of the dude she was with (her husband??). The best way for me to describe it was that it's like he was wearing a candy necklace and she was a fruit fly. Christ all mighty. I was fantasizing about shooting her with one of those little tranquilizer blow-darts.

ANYWAY... awesome show, as always. Ed's voice sounds amazing. Now I'm checking the rest of the tour dates to see if I can swing another show on this tour.

This is clipped from the Tower Theater wiki:
In September 1974, Bruce Springsteen – who had an early, strong, and long-lived fan base in Philadelphia – introduced the world to his new E Street Band, with Max Weinberg and Roy Bittan, at the Tower Theater. It was the first time in his career that Springsteen earned $5,000 for a night's work. He returned in early November for two sold-out shows

Not splitting hairs, that is wrong..
Or to put it better in perspective for people here, saying the E Street Band made it's debut when Max and Roy joined the Band, would be like someone writing an article about Pearl Jam and claiming they were a new band making their debut and citing Matt Cameron's first show.

Slow down there, Bruce Police. I think we are both big fans and can appreciate Ed's intentions here.

The reference to the '74 show was honorable. It's a bit of an injustice to say Max and Roy were added as interchangeably as anyone else over the years...This was a landmark show, featuring two vital members for the first time.

Although, we both know the "real" E Street Band didn't exist until 2002, when Soozie Tyrell added her violin to the ensemble. ;)

The Philly fan bashing gets so tired. Were there a couple of stupid comments that made their way to Ed (just like in New York when one guy yelled at him to put the ukulele away for fuck's sake...)? Yes. A few meatheads who had too many beers at a Saturday night concert? Yes. But does that supersede the incredible energy that Ed fed off of, the entire crowd rising to its feet with the first note of "Unthought Known" or the outpouring to every nuance of the Springsteen cover?

I know my answer, and based on how often Pearl Jam plays here, and the wide grin on his face most of the night, I have a feeling about Ed's.

  • Amazing show. Amazing set.

Aside from a few oddballs, I thought the crowd was pretty tame. I didn't hear the "Fuck New York" guy at all. But I did hear the guy cheering when Eddie was talking about his friend's wife dying - What a douchebag. Apart from that though, the only things I would have preferred to not have going on were the guy beside my husband singing the wrong words to all the songs fairly loudly and the dudes behind us talking in a different language the whole show. We were both equally impressed though with everyone's behaviour.

As for the show itself, I'm still trying to soak it all up. I'm a fairly emotional concert goer at the best of times, but "Drive All Night" nearly killed me. It was unbelievable. Even today when I listened to the Bruce version when I got home, I cried all over again.

"Girl From The North Country" was especially awesome as well. Arranged differently than Dylan does it, but still great.

I may be the only one out there with this opinion, but it must be said. As much as I absolutely LOVED Eddie joining Glen for "Falling Slowly," I gotta say, knowing that Marketa was in the building, I was so disappointed that she wasn't on stage. I was a big Glen fan before the show and that song in particular has quickly become one of my favorites since I saw the movie. When he called her out on stage during his opener, I thought for sure that's what they were going to sing. When they didn't, I assumed she would be out later to sing it with him. Had I not known she was in the building, I would have been able to completely enjoy Eddie and Glen, but as it was I felt something was missing. I'm not at all saying they didn't sing it beautifully and that it wasn't one of my favorite Eddie moments to date, but there was just something missing.

As for Philly, had a great time touring around. Would have loved for cabs to be more readily available after the show, but all in all, awesome time.

Nice. Seemed like about 98% of the crowd was awesome.

    good show and all,
but the heat inside that theatre
    was too much ,
    to make it very uncomfortable.

My 5th EV show and I thought this crowd was the best one. For the most part, the crowd was pretty respectful, at least from where I was sitting. Although, I am pretty sure Eddie could see me from the stage all the way up in the balcony seats because I literally felt like I was "glowing" from the cell phone lights on either side of me! (That was slightly annoying, but I didn't let it ruin my evening.)

The cell phone thing is out of hand, people don't know how to just go out and enjoy themselves without texting, tweeting, youtubing and facebooking every single second of their lives....the guy next to me recorded the whole concert (which from what I could see looked like a black screen with a little white light and the back of some guys head in the picture. Good job Dude. I did have to smile when he dropped his phone under the seat in front of him and couldn't reach it!

Anyway....show was amazing, as always. Hearing I Am Mine is always awesome, I love it. And he played it so well last night. "WIthout You" brought me to tears. Never has that happened to me at a concert. I don't know why, but it just struck me. It was so beautiful.

No one mentioned, I don't think, how awesome it was to see Eddie sit down behind a piano last night. That was great.

I know I'll get yelled at for this, but could have done without hearing Hard Sun, Arc and Elderly Woman. Just because I would have liked to hear something different in it's place.

I wish he was here for 2 nights...And I wish everyone would stop knocking the Philly crowds...there are always idiots in every crowd, no matter where you are.
The alternate version of Betterman was great. I actually prefer that version to the other one.

first off, incredible show, so many highs......even though not hearing "sometimes" or "long road" was a bummer, but Parting Ways was a nice suprise along with Speed of Sound, this song works so well acoustic its sick. i don't really like Bruce, i enjoy his more commercial stuff but i don't own one record, and i know i probably would not enjoy his version of Drive all night, but this version tonight was beyond powerful. two of the more intense highlights were "other" peoples songs.....but that can happen.

now onto the low points...and the the complete fucking assholes around us and in the building in general...two drunk idiots across from me in right section near row O right on the end. why people have to get completely obliterated and drunk is beyond me, esp at a show like this, PJ show i can see it. sceaming at the top of your lungs so the whole crowd can hear you or your life isn't complete?

i've been to over 100 concerts in my life, in nearly every northeastern BIG city and nearly every size venue imaginable, and this was the absolute most single WORST distracting crowd of fucking idiots i've ever been around - probably only 5% of the crowd but believe me, it was enough to wreck the moment for anyone in those areas as mentioned or anywhere frankly the venue its that small and intimate. the "normal" people i talked to in my row where from baltimore and NY so that tells you something. i live in WESTERN PA. the fight in front of me (tripped guy and the punch that followed - the dude got tripped for a reason i'm sure had to be a complete asshole and got what was coming - he was drunk off his ass).

i will say the energy in the building was great at times but the distractions were unbelievable. it won't take away completely how great the show was....i'm glad i'll eventually be able to listen back on it, hoping the idoits are not present too much...

Met some people from Germany who flew over here just for the concert and were going back right after the show - that's so awesome to me:D

Was one of them super tall? He took my spare ticket. He and his friend were great company throughout the afternoon/evening. I hope to be able to travel to a show like that sometime.
  • There were a few idiots in the crowd for this show but overall the crowd was pretty awesome. Very energetic and supportive and you could tell Ed genuinely appreciated the reaction he got, I think the Philly bashing is a little harsh but justified at the same time to some degree, I was sitting next to some idiot that thought it would be a good idea to try and sing over top of Ed and scream "wooo" while Ed was playing until someone told him to shut the fuck up. I was around the first fight and didn't get distracted by it but if the guy next to me would have kept it up one more song I might have been in fight number 2 in that part of the theatre haha, but seriously I'm joking, the show was unbelivable...Thanks 10c and thanks Ed for an AMAZING show

chiming in... I thought the crowd, save for a few douchebags, was quiet and respectful...

I was in RR and suffered behind a clueless egocentric selfish moron who insisted on texting, despite my asking, requesting, and demanding she stop... if you are on this forum, you, in RR, east 113, wearing the black shirt (that was too short for your saddle bags) and capri jeans (that were too tight for your age), you do not deserve thumbs.

my view of "the fight early on" was the guy was taking photos, and was warned by security to stop... after his final warning he continued to take photos... he was then removed and fought the whole way up the aisle.

    oh... Falling Slowly... wow...

Yes it was a Philly crowd. I didn't see the fist fighting but wish I did. There were just so many guys packed together drunk as hell on a hot Saturday night in Philly, you know fists are gonna fly. This happens all the time at Phillies and Eagles games. Drinking and fighting is a way of life here, otherwise known as alcoholism. I sometimes wish they wouldn't sell alcohol at events in Philly but I suppose there's too much profit and you wish people were not so maladjusted and could control themselves. New York had a lot of drunk people too, but so many more hot babes, so it evened itself out in my opinion. But Philly is my home though quite ugly in the spotlight when mixed with alcohol.

You are assuming the idiots were from Philly? In all actuality you have no idea where they were from.

Agreed. Not to mention I absolutely hate when people say this is something that happens all the time at Phillies/Eagles games, etc. Guess what, it happens everywhere. We just have a reputation, so anything that happens now is pointed out in the media, on boards like this, etc. I've seen drunk people at every concert and sporting event I've ever been to.

The show was amazing, as was the crowd. As pointed out earlier, it was obvious Ed was hyped up for this show. We all know PJ has loved playing Philly throughout the years.

I didn't see any fights or anyone get kicked out. My section was good, did hear a little yelling from the left balcony, but I didn't think it was anything overbearing.
Don't come closer or I'll have to go
  • I got a good laugh reading about all the fights and such. I never saw anything remotely rowdy like that. Of course, I was pretty high up in the balcony. People were pretty cool up there. Although I had the wasted schmoopy schmoopy couple sitting in front of me who were just flailing all over each other the whole time. My only real complaint is the complete lack of A/C there. It was scorching in there.

Even getting out of there was a breeze. Just popped out after the show, got in my car in the parking lot behind the theater and took off. No wait at all. Very simple.

The show itself was excellent. Ed's voice is in tip top shape, not sure I've heard him sound better live. Hope he had that voice when PJ recorded their album. My highlights were Without You, Far Behind, Drive All Night, and Falling Slowly.

i'm really trying to convince myself that i like the poster from philly. i made up my mind before i saw it that i would get one to comemorate my first EV show. unfortunately, after seeing the other cities' posters, i'm not too impressed. that being said, i'd rather have this one than one from another city, since i can actually point to it and say "i was at that show and it was awesome." plus, its a cool thing to remember the show by, and once i get a frame on it, it will last way longer than if i would have bought a shirt.

Was one of them super tall? He took my spare ticket. He and his friend were great company throughout the afternoon/evening. I hope to be able to travel to a show like that sometime.

I sat next to a guy at the Bristow show that says he plans his vacation around Pearl Jam...I thought this was actually a pretty good idea...there's plenty of places I still want to see..maybe I should just let Pearl Jam decide.. :D
I'm planning on heading to Seattle since I've never been there..as soon as PJ plays there again :D
Show #13 was a lucky one for me....
  • Is there any chance at all that this solo tour will have bootlegs released? I had no idea he didn't release solo bootlegs until today when I started googling. Ruined my day because I think I could listen to that setlist for at least once a week the rest of my life.

I don't have much to add that hasn't already been said many times - awesome show, too many asshats yelling at inappropriate times, too many people with cameras or phones out (one jackass behind me actually answered his phone and had a conversation in the middle of a song) - but one thing I loved what when everyone jumped to their feet at the beginning of Unthought Known. I've only been to one other EV show, and not on this tour so I'm not sure if that is now standard operating procedure, but it was great. Tremendous combo of being able to sit down and take it all in at the beginning/most of the show while getting to stand up and sing later on.

My highlights were You're True, Unthought Known, Speed of Sound, and Falling Slowly. Drive All Night was nice, but it would have been better had a guy two rows behind me not yelled "Clarence is proud of you, yeahhhhhhhhhhhh" seventeen times (only a slight exaggeration) throughout the song.
