Good stuff too with the "Evening with the Tragically Hip" tour of 2000.
Thought they were burned out for sure..
then suddenly they were completely rejuvenated in the 2002 tour...putting "Blow at High Dough" third song in the set.. blistering!..
since then... its been pretty stale..IMO..
the only bright spots for me were the first live performances of "Fiddlers Green" and "The Bear" (my favorite Hip gem of all time) in an acoustic setting in 2010.
If Gord could just have confidence that the audience doesn't need him to be constantly writhing and tap dancing with his "microphone stand/ I'm a man" rant and just allow the band to groove onstage without his overdone antics..
they would be making progress..
I mean a little is ok but every tour he seems to be ADHD on the visuals..
Just one Hard core Hip fan since 1994 opinion..

Disagree. His rants and improvs have been part of the Hip's live show since the early days. Ever since I first saw them in 1992, the guy has never stopped moving when he's on stage. Some of his rants are bits of new lyrics that he's working on, so your comment about them being pre-written is partly true. But many of them are still made up on the spot. On Wednesday night in Calgary, he took some comments made by Stephen Harper in an interview at the Stampede earlier in the day and worked them into a hilarious rant/intro to Grace, Too that went on for a good 3 minutes or so before he started into the first verse. It was awesome and mesmerizing at the same time. Later in the set he used the weather, making up a story about how he helped build the first railroad through Calgary in the sweltering summer heat, and then he started singing one of those turn of the century style chain-gang songs to emphasize the story. I don't care what anybody says. That's good stuff, and it adds a unique element to the Hip that no other band has.
My favorite Gord-ism was a story my buddy told about when he saw them in 2008. Some woman threw her bra up on stage and Gord proceeded to make up a song on the spot called "Here come the tits". Personally I don't know if I'd ever want to see them live anymore if he stopped doing stuff like that. But hey, maybe that's just me. To each their own of course.
Anyways, the show at Fort Calgary on Wednesday was excellent. A little too heavy on the greatest hits for my liking. But the band was in fine form, and the new songs sounded amazing. In particular a song called "Attawapiskat" which blew me away. Great melody in the chorus and a rippin' solo from Rob Baker during the song's outro. This new album is gonna be VERY good. Oh, and they also played "Last of the Unplucked Gems", which absolutely made my night.

i am a little dissapointed and shocked that Drip Drip didnt make the album, but that must mean they had a great bunch of songs to leave that one off. EDIT - it seems like it is on there, just under the title WE WANT TO BE IT.
i like the new single, dont love....it sounds very Grand Bounce to me...
a little underwhelmed. doesnt matter....bring on some wintery canadian tour dates!!!!!!

this band needs to release boots of each show, like PJ does. There are so many out there, but I have yet to find any of the Winnipeg shows that I've been to!

I've got good news for ya. Drip Drip is on the album. It's been renamed "We Want to Be It". Take a listen and you'll notice the line is repeated in the chorus:
I'm diggin' the new single. Very catchy tune with some furious drumming from Mr. Fay, big loud guitars, and Gord's voice sounds great. Reminds me a little bit of "In View", but with better lyrics and a more live-off-the-floor vibe. October 2nd can't get here soon enough. The damn record has been finished since April, and I can't for the life of me figure out why Universal waited this long to put it out. This is why major labels suck. Back in June, Paul was interviewed for some radio station and he said that if the band had their choice, the album would have come out in the summer. But unfortunately it was out of their hands at that point. They should just start their own label and go the indie route from here on out. Plenty of other arena-sized bands are doing it (Pearl Jam, Radiohead, etc..). The Hip are already on an indie label in the U.S. (Rounder), so there's no reason why they can't do it in Canada as well.

This song sounded awesome in Calgary earlier this summer. The extended instrumental outro is classic Hip. Lots of room for Robby to let loose.

Cant wait for the new album and tour. I do agree that it would be nice for them to change up their setlist more often. How I would love to go to a hip show and they break out " Butts wigglin " Save the planet" or Coconut Cream....

For summer festival gigs they tend to stick to more of a greatest hits style setlist. For the upcoming world tour I have no doubt that they'll break out some of the rarities. The '09 tour was awesome for that, and I'm hoping the trend continues.

Goddammit, I want to go down and see one of the American shows so badly, but I just can't do it this year. I don't have the funds and I used up all my vacation time in the summer...Gaaaahhh!!! I've got my fingers crossed for a 2nd leg of U.S. dates in 2013.
Only 14 more sleeps until the new album! I'm surprised it hasn't leaked yet.

For a good taste of the new album, check out the U.S. iTunes store. They've got 90-second clips of all the songs, which gives you a pretty good indication of how the album sounds. 90 seconds isn't enough to base an opinion on of course, but I fuckin' LOVE what I'm hearing so far. The 3 bonus live tracks sound good as well. Gord's awesome rant at the beginning of Grace, Too from Calgary is one for the ages. I was at that show and his rant went on for a good 2 minutes or so before he kicked into the first verse.
Oh, and for those who care, that's the lovely Sarah Harmer singing background vocals on "The Lookahead". Still can't believe this thing hasn't leaked yet. Leak, dammit. LEAK!

I've never seen Heskentenel or whatever the hell that was called. Anyone have a download link?
I've got the VHS - bought it at a local music store during a lunch break when I was in high school. It's pretty damn good. I think someone mentioned it being available on a youtube channel earlier in the thread.
I used to have a song labeled as "I feel guilt" on a mixed CD. It was from a CBC show The Hip did called "Swinging on a Star" (1992) and they performed with Sarah Craig. That CD got ruined a while ago, and I've had an impossible time tracking down the song. Out of my whole music library, that song is the only thing I'm missing from the things I used to own. It's really frustrating! If anyone has that song, I would be really grateful if I could get my hands on it.
