I used to have a song labeled as "I feel guilt" on a mixed CD. It was from a CBC show The Hip did called "Swinging on a Star" (1992) and they performed with Sarah Craig. That CD got ruined a while ago, and I've had an impossible time tracking down the song. Out of my whole music library, that song is the only thing I'm missing from the things I used to own. It's really frustrating! If anyone has that song, I would be really grateful if I could get my hands on it.
Damn, I wish I could help you out. I remember the show you're talking about, and I remember them performing a couple of songs with the Rheostatics. But I don't remember the Sarah Craig tune at all. Perhaps I only heard part of the show.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

I didn't know they played with the Rheostatics at that CBC thing. I just had the one song. I did see the Rheostatics open for them in '96 in Ottawa though - it was my first concert ever! I wonder if that bootleg is floating around somewhere???

"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."
And if you only click one, this is the one, not perfect audio, but covering the Stones, Doors and Hendrix tease all in one song....dripping with intensity. LOVE when the transition to the changeling groove, couldn't believe it the first time I heard it!
Great clips! Thanks for posting! One of my all-time favorite Hip clips is this epic version of At the Hundredth Meridan from Glasgow, Scotland on the '09 tour. Great rant from Gord during the middle jam about nationalism getting in the way of people's enjoyment of the show (it appears there was some kind of fight going on near the front of the stage). I also love the bit where he starts chatting with the crowd and making up stories about them. Classic stuff from the greatest frontman in the biz:
"I'm your country tonight. I don't have a flag, 'cause I don't need a fuckin' flag!"

9 days away from the new album, and it still hasn't leaked yet. I'm astonished.

I've been listening to this baby all day, so here's my early track-by-track review:
At Transformation:
The album kicks off with the sound of vintage 90s Hip; Grungy, in-yer-face guitars, head-bobbing rhythm, Gord's menacing delivery, awesome lyrics, and some kick-ass guitar noodling from Rob Baker.
Man Machine Poem:
Gorgeous chord progression and some passionate vocals from Gord. Love when the drums kick it up a notch during the 2nd verse. Some nice melodic guitar work from Baker as the song picks up steam. Definitely one of the most unique songs they've ever penned. I'm really diggin' it.
The Lookahead:
Concise, catchy pop-rocker with the lovely Sarah Harmer singing backup vocals. Cool tune.
We Want to Be It:
Fuckin' EPIC. One of the strongest ballads they've ever written in my opinion. Magnificent, soaring chorus and some great lyrics from Gord: "All our friends gave us a week. But we're still happenin' as we speak."
Streets Ahead:
Up-tempo, toe-tappin' pop-rock. Reminds me a bit of "In View", but with better lyrics. Some nice imagery in there. The lyrics seem to be about the single-minded determination of sled dogs, but I'll need to see the lyric booklet to get a full perspective on it. The song is ok, but not great. Probably the weakest track on the album, despite some frenetic drumming from Johnny Fay and some terrific bass work from Sinclair.
Now For Plan A:
Absolutely gorgeous. A breezy, meditative duet between Gord and the aforementioned Sarah Harmer. Fantastic lyrics and singing from both parties on this one, and the accompanying music is pitch perfect. A stunning track. Mark my words, this one will be considered a Hip classic in a few years.
The Modern Spirit:
The album picks up the energy again with this insanely catchy, up-tempo rocker. Nice melodies, killer guitars, and excellent singing from G.D. Another song that has "potential classic" written all over it.
About this Map:
Meh. Not sure I like this one all too much. The lyrics are solid and I like the verses, but I'm not a big fan of the chorus. Like a lot of their stuff, this one will have to grow on me.
Take Forever:
Another throwback song. Dare I say it, this one has kind of an "Up to Here" vibe with it's simple 4/4 bar-rock structure. Very catchy tune. I dig it.
Done and Done:
The third and final mellow-ish ballad on the album. Wonderful chorus and some nice lyrics. The song seems a bit too short though, almost like it's unfinished. Not my favorite track, but I like it.
Goodnight Attiwapiskat:
Love this song! An excellent conclusion to the album. The band plays around in the patented Hip "pocket" during the verses and then explodes into a beautiful and majestic chorus. The instrumental coda at the end of the song is classic Hip.
And there you have it. It's way too early to decide where this album sits with the rest of their catalogue. But one thing's for sure, it's a VERY solid piece of work. I already like it better than the last two albums, and the production from Gavin Brown is much rawer and better suited to their sound. If you held a gun to my head and told me to rate it after just a few spins, I'd say it might possibly be the best thing they've done since Music@Work. But don't quote me on that yet. I need to absorb this sucker for a few more weeks before I give my final verdict.

Gord Downie is appearing on Q TV next Tuesday, Oct. 2nd. This should be a good one. His last visit to Q was one of the most in-depth interviews I've ever seen with the guy:
...and holy smokes, this new album keeps getting better with each spin. Every time I listen to it I keep finding new little moments that elevate the awesomeness to another level. I'm lovin' it!

"If Justin Trudeau came up with some really fucking bold policies, I might vote for him."
"Thanks for buying the vinyl. You can roll your joints on it. Don't see you doing that with illegal downloads."

I just arrived in Toronto last night for a new job that started today. After I got home from work I got word that The Hip were playing in Kensington Market. I rushed down there and found myself watching them play in a little bar. The first time I saw them (my first concert ever in 1996), I was in the very back row of a stadium. It was pretty cool to see them all these years later at such a small place. Might try to go see them again tomorrow!

Goddamn, I hope someone is capturing the audio from this. Absolutely EPIC version of Grace, Too.

Going for round two tonight... hopefully I'll get in.
Damn, didn't get in tonight.
I see that Jack White is playing the next two nights, RNDM is coming to soon, The Wallflowers are playing this month, and Social Distortion is coming up soon as well. I think I need to be careful not to go broke... bit of a different town than Ottawa

I've lived here all my life; you really need to pick and choose which concerts are important to you or you'll drop every hard-earned dollar on shows.
