Smokers who throw/drop cigarettes out their car window

One of the women I work with on Main St. saw a guy throw his crushed smoke out his car window. Traffic was slow so she ran out, picked up the butt, handed it to him and said, "Here, I think you dropped this."

When I was young and stupid (hey, it's a guy thing- what can I say?) I thought it was cool to flick my smokes (which I gave up many years ago). Since then I've probably retrieved and properly dispossed of twice as many.

Exactly. Over the years, I've watched my smoker friends go from littering to squishing the flame out and putting the filter in their pocket to throw out later when we were out in the boat or on the trails. We wouldn't let people on our boat if they threw the butts in the water. It isn't difficult to be mindful and find a trash for the butts.

I can't cast the first stone because, like I said, I did the same many years ago. But this is 2011- people still toss butts? Really? Yeah, sorry, but I think some butt chewing is in order!

Yes, I agree - it's all bullshit. There is absolutely no excuse. Regardless of littering or pollution or whatever, throwing cigarettes out of cars starts fires - not just fires that burn trees, but fires that rage on for months, burning down people's homes, killing people. I may have bad habits, but my bad habits are not directly responsible for killing people & destroying people's lives. There's just NO FUCKING EXCUSE.

i neither smoke nor own a car. I WIN!!!!!

I have noticed that mainly young people litter….I live at the beach and see this lot. I have college kids living across the street and the trash I have to pick up from there parties (and it is none stop) goes right back over there fence.
What about noise pollution? These kids seem to never sleep, we cannot even sleep with the windows up because they talk to the top of there lungs no matter what time it is. The cops are there almost every weekend but nothing get done. They hit my car knocking it into my yard, cops did nothing! Florida cops suck! They hate to work, at least in my town.

Personnaly, I wouldn't single out kids on this or any other issue but I do greatly appreciate you pointing out noise pollution- a very much over-looked contemporary problem. But you've completely missed my point. I was trying to point out that making excuses for something that is soooo easily avoidable is ridiculous. A lot of people who toss butts just do it because they've done it for a long time and don't put too much thought into it. Be conscious of the little things, it helps. Once someones busted (like you have been with fines), or see how disgusting it is to other people, or see how easy it is to avoid littering, it should be a no brainer.
