    The security/police was paid for by the taxpayers. The rest was mainly the Queen and Prince Charles with Kate's family contributing £100,000

    Apparently I hit a nerve, and I did not mean to. I'm not sure what role the Royal Families play in all of these countries. But in Britain they do not govern, or have any say in domestic/foreign policy. I would say they are still there mainly out of tradition than anything else. Do I think they need to get rid of them? Well I don't really think it's any of my business, I'm not British and I will not stick my nose that far in their affairs (other than just opining about it on a PJ board), as they don't do any real harm as I can see. I imagine the cost of sustaining them could probably be put to better use, but hey, I live in the USA. We don't exactly manage our money well either.

    No nerve hit. I'm actually a staunch republican (ie as advocate of a republic, not from the republican party!) and I'm not british either. The queen is the head of state - a figurehead - and as such receives/entertains dignitaries and represents the country abroad, etc., the royals are all involved in various charities and most have 'proper' jobs. The cost of keeping the royal family is far outweighed by the income they generate.

    Edit: The last true monarchy was Luxembourg - the constitution was only changed a couple of years ago (I think) and now it's 'in line' with the rest of the European monarchies.

    I couldn't give a shite about the royal family but I love weddings and there was a lovely one on today. You could tell they really love eachother and it was really sweet and cute. She looked absolutely stunning... breathtakingly beautiful, what a dress!
