13 years old, in Grade 7 listening to awesome early 90's dance music without any interest whatsoever in "heavy metal" music :)

Now I am obsessed with PJ . . . . and still love my 90's dance

Freshman year of high school. My soul was ripe for the picking and PJ along with Nirvana, Primus, and Alice in Chains have made up the soundtrack of my life ever since.

I just remember buying Ten and Guns and Roses use your illusion 1 & 2 all on the same day. I believe it was in September of 1991 my freshman year at the University of Pittsburgh.

Excellent thread: I enjoyed reading everybody's stories so far!

In 1991 I was 14 and that was my first year of high school.
Music was my passion and main hobby: Elvis (from my eldest brother) and Bruce Springsteen (from the other brother) could be heard daily in my house, while I was a lot into Queen, at the time. How I wish I had the possibility to see them live! That November was pretty sad as Freddy Mercury died, on my mum's birthday. I'll never forget the tribute held at Wembley stadium that came right after that, in April 1992.
Like many of you already mentioned, I think I happened to know Metallica before Pearl jam stepped into my life: I used to listened to their Black album for hours. My favourite band only came later when a friend of mine gave me a cassette with both Ten and Vs. together. What I clearly remember though, is how mesmerized I was when watching Jeremy on Mtv and I simply loved listening to Once :D

By the time I heard Pearl Jam for the first time, I was 19 and in my first year of college. I remember being in class, and this one guy would walk in every day singing at the top of his lungs, "Evenflow, thoughts arrive like butterflies." He did this for a few days and curiosity got the better of me. I asked him what he was singing and he told me, "Pearl Jam, they're amazing." So after classes that day I found my boyfriend and told him we had to go to the record store. When we got there I found Ten on CD so I bought it, even though he was the one who owned the CD player. When we got back to his place, we put it on. It WAS amazing. When it finished, he played it again... and again.

My memories are a little fuzzy but I believe I heard PJ before I'd ever heard Nirvana, so it must have been darn close to when Ten was first released. By the time Nirvana got huge, I loved them too but there were a few of us that were already PJ die-hards and put Nevermind as a close second.

That was a great year, Ten, Nevermind and Badmotorfinger were all released. 1991 really was the birth of "grunge".

Sophomore going on 16, riding skateboards, stealing 40s, and listening to a lot of Eazy-E. PJ was introduced to me the following school year...thank goodness. I worked at a seafood restaurant where I remember listening to "Alive" over and over one particular day, which led to one of the girls we worked with complaining "Is that all you guys are going to listen to?" I remember standing there in that kitchen like it was yesterday telling her YES IT IS!!!

    Awesome first post :-D

Let's see, I was 12. It was about that time I talked my parents into buying me our household's first CD player (which I still have, a huge Sony contraption). My first CDs are a little embarassing; Heavy D and the Boys being my first and Right Said Fred amongst them, cause you know, I'm too sexy (I'm starting to question my parents for buying that for a 12 year old). But Nirvana, PJ, Soundgarden, NIN, RHCP soon filled my collection and the rest is history. However my Mom kept throwing away my RHCP Blood Sugar Sex Magic cd booklet because of all the tattoos in it.
