My wife is Japanese - most of her family is around Hiroshima - minimal issues there. Her brother is a chef in Tokyo, said pots and pans were falling all around. When he was walking home during one of the aftershocks, said it felt like he was "walking on the deck of a boat".

I'm still waiting to hear from one of my wife's friends who lives in Sendai - right near the epicenter and where the tsunami was most serious. Phone lines still down...
    Yeah
My mom said she's praying for her friend who is in Sendai as well.

My dad hasn't been able to get a hold of my aunts yet. I'm sure they are okay though, from what i understand most of the damage is due to the tsunami (buildings in Japan are built for quakes i think, so the damage isn't as bad as it might be elsewhere in the world). So we're waiting to be able to contact people in Sendai as well, since its mostly shut off I think.

The situation has gotten extremely bad.
Went from one nuclear reactor to two...
Now they're saying 5 are unstable.

At least 2 are in a state of emergency, they're predicting if they don't fix it in a couple hours it's going to be catastrophic.

Have big quakes always happened with this frequency, or have the last few years been pretty damn active?

Makes you wonder if this is normal or if the universe is really lining up for 2012.. I don't understand the science behind it, but still. It's crazy.

I get that.. but, have there been way more bigger ones in this last decade than before?

I might as well be fucking high right now, but this cabernet will do. 8-)

Speaking of which, I WOULD NOT have liked to have been on this planet 4 billion years ago. Talk about instability.

USGS Dr. Dave Applegate says the Japan earthquake ruptured a 180 mile long by 50 mile wide section of the Earth's crust.

Scientists from the United States Geological Service answered questions from the public this afternoon, with some startling revelations made.

    * The first tsunami wave in Samoa was reportedly one foot tall, but the seventh wave was much larger, indicating coastal areas shoudl remain on tsunami advisory well after the first wave hits, even if that wave appears small.

    * 100+ aftershocks have rated 5.0 magnitude or more in Japan since the initial shake.

    * Earth's axis has reportedly shifted ten inches as a result of the quake, and Japan's coast is said to have permanently shifted 2.4 metres.

    * The quake was 900 times stronger than the quake that hammered San Francisco in 1989.

    * Aftershocks from the Peru earthquake of almost a year ago are still felt to this day.

    * Honshu earthquake occurred on ocean floor of the Pacific plate, bumping 250 miles of coastline.

    * Shaking was felt as far away as China.

    * The Honshu quake was not as large as the 1964 Alaska earthquake, but was comparable to the recent Chile earthquake.

    * Tsunami waves that hit California earlier today washed three onlookers out to sea. Two have been recovered.

    * St Louis, Missouri media outlets report that city has moved an inch as a result of the quake. :wtf:

    * Waves from the ensuing tsunami reached 32 feet high.

I've just donated to the Save the Children fund. Saw some footage of a boatload of children in a waterway with a couple of adults looking after them. The adults rescued them from a day care centre. The poor things were traumatised and probably didnt know what the hell happened (they looked very young) and where they hell were their parents? Very probably no longer alive...... I feel so sorry for them and want to help. So a donation is what I felt I could do.

(((hugs))) I'm glad to hear that your dad reached your aunts. I desperately hope that he will soon hear from your uncle as well. My heart breaks a little bit more every time I read or watch more of the news.
