I live in Christchurch N.Z where we have lost so many of our brothers and sisters, I feel for these people. We have had so much support from specialist rescue teams from around the world Japanese being one of them. I hope they are now home where they are needed!

My thoughts go out to you as well. I lived in Hamilton for 2 years as a kid and travelled around New Zealand quite a bit. My family was devastated to hear about Christchurch, especially considering my mom studies natural hazards and that is why we lived in New Zealand. It is a beautiful city and country and I hope all is well.

It's amazing out here ... but, as an east coaster, it's taken a while to get used to the quakes. I've felt about 8-10 or so since I've been out here ... I think I'm cool up to M5.5 or so before I start feeling uneasy.

Damn, yeah, my girlfriend couldn't take that, especially after Chile. Not sure how much I could take it either, the ground really isn't supposed to shake like that. Beautiful fucking city thought, dude. I feel in love with it, knew I would.

These are scary times... so many earthquakes in the past couple years.
Hope you are recovering well, very difficult to be in that part of the world right now.

Apparently we're due for a big one on this side of the pond... *knock on wood*

We were planning a trip to go back though, and I am planning to study there... :?

I got a hold of him he didn't know about it since he hadn't been around a TV, I texted him and he phoned back right away, now he's driving back to the house he's staying in on Vancouver Island (he's working over there) I imagine he will be trying to get a hold of my aunts and cousins, we have family in Tokyo and in Iwate Prefecture.

People tweeting in to the news about deaths.. ugh

Well, glad to hear he is on this side right now, it is much safer. I hope all is well with the rest of your family though. I am sure it is really scary, like I mentioned, I know what you are going through and it's no fun.

Yeah, I just heard CNN reading a tweet about someones grandfater dying, brutal.

    Just devastating . . . again :(

My heart goes out to those affected.

Hey Haffa, do you know where we go to check for Tsunami warnings? I checked the BC govt website and the Emerg. Mgt but couldn't find anything.

I was born in Japan and raised in British Columbia, but still feel strongly attached to my heritage.
I haven't seen my family in about 15 years, but i mostly feel scared for my dad.
He's an issei technically the first one of his family to immigrate out of japan, all of his family is there, even though he's lived here for about 22 years.

It's a weird feeling I can't really explain, I can't turn off the TV... Not that I haven't felt horrible with any of the other ones lately but it really strikes a different chord when it is in a country that's close to your heart.

You don't think we'll have one here do you?
There was one during the chilean quake but it didn't amount to much.

    I imagine if there's anything it'd be tofino/ucuelet/tasis area...

Absolutely, it's obviously much worse when you have family there, whether you have seen them recently or not, it's still family. I will keep you in my thoughts and stay in touch with your dad as much as possible, I am sure it is even more difficult on him, so stay in touch.

Well, those would be the major areas for sure. I don't know though, I mean they've issued evacuation warnings for low-lying areas of Russia on the Pac Coast.

Yeah, really bad. Fortunately, it looks like the tsunamis hit areas that were not densely populated
