Wishing the wrong people Merry Christmas...

If someone in passing wishes you Merry Christmas and is happy and spreading holiday cheer, why fuck with them??? All it takes is a nod and a thank you and the person departs with a smile and the conversation is forgotten about in 10 seconds. But if your respond with a "I don't celebrate Xmas" type of comment, then the person will think you are a dick for the rest of their lives. And rightfully so.Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0

I agree with this comment. People have gotten very (ridiculously) sensitive over stuff like this. If someone saying to you Merry Christmas with a smile on their face, offends your sensibilities, then really, you need to get a life. Just be happy for goodness sake. It's not that hard to say thanks, you too. And then forget about it.0 -

Right or wrong, I am a Christian I believe in GOD, Jesus and the Holy Ghost. I will say Merry Christmas to everyone. Now should I know that you celebrate a holiday other than Christmas then I will do my best to honor that and say Happy __________ during that time.
Instead of getting angry and pissed that someone said the wrong Happy or Merry_____ educate nicely and leave it at that. There is no need for sarcasm, anger and pessimism when someone is just trying to show kindness.0 -

Why do people get so offended by 'happy holidays'? It celebrates the diversity of this country...what's wrong with that? I guarantee Christians would get offended by someone coming up to them and saying 'Happy Winter Solstice' or 'Happy Kwaanza!'. If you know someone is a Christian, 'Merry Christmas' is appropriate. If you don't know, what's wrong with 'Happy Holidays'? Get with the times, people. Trying to force a 'Merry Christmas' on a Hindu or Muslim when it is clear that they are not a Christian just comes off as arrogant. I guess if you want to be as polite as possible, wish a "Happy Holidays". But on the other hand, I honestly feel that there is no point to just retorting with "I don't celebrate Christmas....". Most of the time when someone doesn't celebrate Christmas, it's not known to others...because who goes around during the other 11 months of the year and says "By the way guys, when it comes holiday time...Be sure to wish me a Happy ________."
It would just be easier to say "thank you", and appreciate the person's nice gesture.7/2/06 - Denver, CO

I wish people merry christmas... if they don't celebrate it, they can still have a merry day (especially when they get it off). I work with a few Jewish guys so I usually make a point to wish them happy hanukkah when it starts, but I'll still say to have a merry christmas before i leave today. If they tell me happy hanukkah, i'll say thanks and be fine with that... i can still have eight happy days.
Exactly. Just the act of passing on a sentiment is a nice thing to do, and I think that's the big picture.
People are just too damn sensitive sometimes.7/2/06 - Denver, CO

i was just saying the other day how i felt everyone gave up on being PC around christmas... and THANK GOD
i heard merry christmas everywhere this year... even in public schools and other places where it used to be a big no no
other than have "christ" right in the name, christmas isn't really about the birth of christ for most people anymore... its about family and friend and decorations and hot cocoa and songs and snow and on and on... all nice things... anyone that has a problem with christmas can suck it0 -
I work in NY so like myself a few jewish people around
So in the lobby of my office, they still have (as we speak) the Menorah candles all lit up for the 8 days... Now I think the buildings should certainly have them and I appreciate if they remember to light them each night
But... Why is it still up? I mean the last day of Hanukkah was on the 9th? Typically it's later in the year, but not this one. I asked the head of security and he said no Hanukkah Lights come down until the tree does...
Why?? I mean I'm done with my holiday0 -

As far as someone like in the OP, it should be fine that they don't celebrate Christmas, but you can tell a person you don't celebrate in a much nicer way than getting uptight about it. "Thanks, but I don't celebrate Christmas". Nothing wrong with that.0 -
I've been at my job for 5 years so I know just about everyone here celebrates Christmas.
Of course, there's always: Happy Pagan Winter Solstice Holiday That Was Stolen by the Christians.
I guess in Australia it would be Summer Solstice, but whatever.Spectrum 10/27/09; New Orleans JazzFest 5/1/10; Made in America 9/2/12; Phila, PA 10/21/13; Phila, PA 10/22/13; Baltimore Arena 10/27/13; Phila, PA 4/28/16; Phila, PA 4/29/16; Fenway Park 8/7/16; Fenway Park 9/2/18; Asbury Park 9/18/21; Camden 9/14/22; Las Vegas 5/16/24; Las Vegas 5/18/24; Phila, PA 9/7/24; Phila, PA 9/9/24; Baltimore Arena 9/12/24; Pittsburgh 5/16/25; Pittsburgh 5/18/25

Fair enough, but on 25th of December, Christmas is celebrated, not another 'holiday'. Now, those not wishing to celebrate it, that's fine. Whilst one can celebrate diversity, the US (like the UK, France, etc.) are inherently Christian countries, therefore this holiday is celebrated as such, though again, it has lost a lot of it's christian message and now, it is all about decorated trees, presents, too much food and drink. 'Merry Christmas' is an ancient greeting which, like a lot of others have lost their true meaning (a bit like the 'bless you' when one sneezes - but that's another thread on the Moving Train!). What about Easter then? Loads of non christians celebrate that too. Bunny Rabbit hiding eggs instead of the resurrection of Christ.
I work in a very multi-cultural environment - I have no problems in people sharing their 'celebrations' with me (eg Diwali), like they have no problems in me saying Merry Christmas to them (and I also get Christmas cards from them).
Happy Holidays is a cop out - it's not 'holidays', it's Christmas - the proper name of this 'holiday'.Post edited by redrock on0 -
