I'm sure it won't matter soon enough. At the rate all of our traditions are being stolen from us, against our will, displaying the flag will be totally illegal in no time.

And just what traditions are being stolen from you?

Edit: And are they traditions worth keeping?

I won't even begin to debate this with you.

    Not today, not ever.

It has nothing to do with drama. It has everything to do with being torn to pieces like a seal in a shark frenzy on this board.

I refuse to be drawn into the debate as a whole, however, I will say this much: You can't put a "Merry Christmas" sign in your yard without getting sued by the worms in the ACLU. There's your example.

I have watched a few F-1 races this year and a little bit of the world cup. To say the US is the only country that goes overboard with their flags is like the pot calling the kettle black ;)

Despite the many flaws of the USA, it is still the country most flock to when they wish for their dreams to come true.

Why are Americans so obsessed with all things military and the waving of flags?

Do you have a problem with your self-esteem?

I would say that a lot of people who fly their American flags have that "america is the greatest superpower" mentality, but not all.

I used to have a small American flag (like 4x6) that was on my front door of my old shithole apartment. I liked it because it reminded me of my grandfather, thats all. He was one of those people who fought in WW2 and yelled at me for buying a subaru because it was japanese. He had that old mentality that his wife should wait on him hand and foot. And he was a bit racist. A sonofabitch from the outside. But he was a product of his times. I really respect the person he was on the inside, or could've been had he not grown up in New Jersey in 1920.

However, he had a great memory and liking of American history. He could recite every single president in order (and thier VP!). He was always yelling at the tv when politicians were on -- I never knew why though. Also, he always had me help him put up the flag on his house on flag day and other days like memorial day. And I also remember when he died that the Navy officer handed my grandmother the flag that was on his coffin. I just saw it as a sign of belonging and respect.

I see people wear jerseys of their favorite NFL and NBA teams, fraternities, Bob Ross, star wars...etc, ect.. I always saw it as just what they likie to identify with, and maybe to a fuller extent, what they belong to.

I still have that little American flag, although now its in a NY yankees pint glass on a shelf. But it has nothing to do with self esteem. It just remindes me of things. I love living where I do and i feel patriotic sometimes, so i'd understand if people put them on their houses sometimes. What i really dont get though is the big old oversized trucks you see with the flags on the side, in the back window and all over the bumpers. That I cant tell you about. ;)

i think the difference there might be that usually if you are at the world cup or at the F1, there's more than one country competing and people use the flags to show which country they are supporting maybe?

living in america and flying a flag outside your house isn't the same. it's not like another Country is right next door to your home and you're flying the flag to show where you come from. unless of course you're Sarah Palin and you can see Russia from your House.

What ever happened to being humble or quiet confidence?
    CONservative governMENt

Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis

I think you know the otherwise to be true. The news reports are already coming in as they do annually about "Christmas" being censored because one person in town is "offended."

To deny this happens is foolish.

Those are national sporting events. If you go to most of these countries you'll be hard pressed to find a flag anywhere. Even here in China - which is another country that likes to promote nationalism, you only see the odd flag flying. I don't know of any other country in the world apart from the U.S where people fly flags from their houses - apart from during the World Cup.

First off while living in Deutschland I seem remember quite a few flags flying.

Second what is wrong with flying a flag? I fly one for the fact I served in the military. Is that wacky to you guys. I don't go around saying if you do not have one you are un=American. Are there people like that yeah, but there are wackos over the place.
