After his Denair, Calif., school told him to remove the American flag from his bicycle, Cody Alicea, 13, received an amazing surprise when hundreds of patriotic bikers — many of them veterans — showed up to escort him to school Monday morning:

    awesome !!!!!

  • Thanks for the story, Aerial. This kind of bravery isn't reported on enough.

  • get tha fuck out of here kid going to an American school was told he couldn't support an American flag now that truly makes no sense, but cheers for the bikers doing what they did
  • Being an American is not something I have acheived, it was something I was born with (I guess...) I was never big on the expression "Proud to be an American". A school telling a child he can't have the American flag on his bicycle is absurd. I don't get what message they are trying to send there. Good for the kid and the veterans.

  • While I am proud to live in this country (not that I had anything to do with it), I don't get the over the top flag waving thing...

but, kudos to this kid for standing up to a stupid rule, and he sounds smarter and more articulate at 13 than a lot of adults that I know.

Good on the bikers for doing this too...

The rest of the story said the school officials set up the rule because of the number of Mexican Flags that kids brought to school on Cinco de Mayo. The ban went into affect to get rid of that problem and it included the American flag.
Now.... if you allow the American flag... you have to allow all the other flags... Mexico, Italy, Ireland, India, Pakistan, VietNam, etc...
It had nothing to do with patriotism or free speech... everything to do with kids not being able to run around the schoolyard with 3 foot long sticks.

  • it's a silly rule. high five to that little kid. if he wants to have the flag on his bicycle leave him alone. he's not hurting anyone.

personally i don't really understand the fascination with Americans and their flags. that was one thing i noticed when i first moved to the U.S. i didn't think it was a 'bad' thing in any way i just didn't understand it. when i asked why so many people would have flags hanging from their houses people would just say to me that they were 'proud to be American and that i wouldn't understand it because i hadn't lived there all my life. i found that a little weird. i didn't see why you need to display a flag to be proud. i still don't, you can be proud of lots of things but you don't display a flag to show that. it doesn't bother me though i mean if people want to display the flag then they should be able to.

until working in the U.S. the only other Country i had ever seen with their flag plastered everywhere was Nazi Germany,

Unfortunately, it became a rule because "the proud to be an American" crowd threw a hissy fit over Mexican flags as Cosmo said.

Once some Americans get over the sense of entitlement of being born in the US, the world will be a better place.

How do you wave a flag... unless it is on a stick? Wear it like a cape? Wave it like a bullfighter?
I'm sure no one will mind when all of those Mexican Flags return to the school... in Sacramento, CA. Yeah... I can't see anyone complaining about that.

ah ok. well that makes sense. being a democracy, people should have the freedom to fly whatever flag they want.

and sticks in schoolyards are probably not a great idea. common sense.

Yeah... you can't tell all the Mexican kids to leave their flags at home and only allow American Flags... you're asking for trouble, there. If you do allow the American flag... you MUST allow any and all flags... flags of nations, the Stars and Bars, the Jolly Roger, A German Battle Flag?

yeah, i couldn't watch the video... but that's pretty riddankulous. good for the kid!
but if it is true, that that is the back story... that they banned all flags in general (which is pretttty stupid!) then they SHOULD ban all flags. Not just Mexican flags. That kid should have rounded up everyone, get everyone to bring their culture's flag!

WTF is it with Americans and their flags anyways?

I think the original ban was because of the numbers of Mexican flags that showed up at the school on Cinco de Mayo.
They couldn't say no specific (Mexican) flags are not allowed at school... that would have created a ton of trouble. So, they opted to say no flags.... of any type... allowed.
    ...
Now... if they allow an American Flag... they can't say, 'Just an American flag is allowed'... they have to allow ALL flags.
Does this include Raider Nation flags?
    ...
And i wonder... how are these 'Proud To Be American' types going to react when the majority of Mexican kids are allowed to bring their flags to school. They SHOULD be proud to be an American that lives in a nation that allows for this type of open expression... but, my guess... not so much.

Don't you remember the craziness after 9/11 with flags. If you didn't have one waving or on your car it was thought of as UnAmerican back then. Nice to see the bikers coming to the rescue and easing any tensions.

Living overseas this is the one of the things that is embarrassing to me(along with Bush, Palin, Beck, Hannity...).

I just had this conversation with somebody, why does the US glorify the military? glorify war? I am all for honoring, but the US has this, the military is great and will kick ass metality which bothers me. (America fuck yeah)

I think it is engrained in the culture. We are dirlled, almost like religion, that America is THE greatest country on earth, what a tremendous honor it is to be born here, the military is fighting for our freedoms and without them we'd be speaking German or Russian blah blah blah.

I don't know....I watched Iron Man 2 with a muslim friend, and yes it is a Hollywood movie, but the over the top military theme, buying weapons and flag waving made me uncomfortable at times.

    yeah for the bikers!!!

the preponderance of american flags was something i noticed whilst in NYC a couple of years back. theyre even on the carriages of the trains. that one threw me. tis not like people are unaware the trains are in america. i remember back in september 2001 one of our newspapers printed an american flag and urged us all to tape it up somewhere to show solidarity. i have a problem with my own national flag so chances of me flying another nations flag is practically nil. anyhoo...

i tend to only see australian flags flying off flagpoles or draped around the necks of yobbos like superhero capes. oh and at the cricket when im bored enough to watch it.

I generally like America a whole lot, but I don't suffer from the blind, nationalistic pride that many people do. I like to see the world as a whole and not make distinctions between people "from here" and people from other places.

In fact, if I see a better opportunity for me in another country, I would leave and call myself a citizen of that nation.
The only people we should try to get even with...
    ...are those who've helped us.

Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.

yes, what traditions are being stolen from us?

and are you really serious when you said displaying a flag will be illegal? that is such an emotional, reactionary statement. i am thinking you were being fascecious or sarcastic. i guess then we won't need them on our government buildings and on the coffins at soldier's funerals then. and we would have to take them off of our military uniforms.
