  • Just got back to the hotel from Shoreline Amphitheater. Eddie sounded freaking amazing tonight, voice never seemed to miss beat. Last Kiss to begin the set wasn't great and a lot of people seem to hate it, but the emotion on the young girls face whom Eddie dedicated the song to was priceless (Her Favorite Song)!!!! The rest of the setlist was awesome and I thought it was pretty unpredictable........the Lullaby version of Betterman w/ the entire band was great, along w/ the Patti Smith & Neil Young Covers. Black was one of the best versions I've seen w/ strings and hearing Unthought Known acoustically was fantastic!!!

    Can't wait for tomorrow afternoon/evening!!!!

To me, the band never sounded better! Ed's voice was absolutely perfect and so strong and controlled! Just amazing. "Last Kiss" has to be played for Maricore and OMG she loved it! The Patti Smith song and the Neil song they did were out of this world fantastic and holy crap my mind was blown. Dumbstruck! Gobsmacked! Stunned!

This was my 10th time seeing the band and I think it might have been the best I've ever heard them! Black with strings was sooooo great - can't begin to say how good it all was. All of it. 100% of it. The reworked Betterman was just incredible (he does say "smooth and strong"!) slower tempo and just wow wow wow!

I was so cold and wet from the off and on rain and wind, but when PJ came on, I forgot all about that and jumped around and sang and took a lot of blurry photos! I wasn't close to the stage, but that didn't even matter, the show was sooooo great!

Hubby and I almost didn't go into the venue, but holy shit I'm glad we did. There were some guys behind that were all fanboy crush on Ed, cuz when the band first came out they all were "There he is! There's Eddie!" It was kind of cute, actually...

Ed's hat and wedding ring did not make this performance. His voice and the fantastic band he's in did. :D

I don't think so too. Nothing was reported here, EB or eBay. Guess it'll be another online sale. Or hopefully there be one tonight.

  • Just going to say, this (whole thing) was Bridge the way nature (and Neil) intended. The weather was ideally Bridge :) freezing cold..
Everyone sounded INCREDIBLE. I think I'll be listening to "Walk With Me" until my daughter pulls her hair out and slams the front door behind her.

And honestly, the Buffalo Springfield was a completely transformative experience. I'm not old enough to remember them when they first came around, but I know plenty of older adults who COULD NOT BELIEVE what they were seeing. And God Bless Stephen Stills... for an old dude whose body has been through as much as his has, the guy looked & sounded amazing, and you don't always get that from him.

Every year I wonder if this was the best year yet & I'm wondering that today. We'll see what tonight has to offer.

LAJ, I love you & miss you desperately. Know you are here with us. :):)

I think the person filming was just shooting the big screen. But indeed an incredible look at an incredible performance. Sounded amazing!

  • Seeing Ed grab the microphone with a ring on his finger is wicked cool!!!
I remember when I got married I noticed my wedding band all the time... and of course like many of you I have seen video footage of Ed for 2 decades and seeing the ring and knowing that this great man who was once young and lost like everyone of us to have love directly in his life each day is a true blessing!

God I love this fucking Band!!
Tonight's show was so amazing on so many levels. I was thinking maybe skipping this one, what the hell, I had tickets for tomorrow's show, and the only tickets left are lawn seats and it's raining...plenty of reasons to sit this one out.
After all, Pearl Jam and I have been on a tear as of late: Outside Lands and San Diego last year, and this year my wife and I flew to NYC for Newark, MSG1 and MSG2 for our first East Coast shows. To say we scored is an understatement. But all day I kept thinking about the 20 YEAR anniversary, and after listening to a few hours of shows, checking old Bridge School setlists, I realized that YES....this could be a solo mission. So it's an acoustic show, shorter set, raining, so what?
Burrito and ticket in hand, I am out the door. I think back to all the great musical moments that Pearl Jam has given me. My first show was a surprise secret concert in 1997 a mere 10 minutes from my house. Pearl Jam was opening up for the Stones in Oakland, and rumor was there was a secret "warm-up" show at the Catalyst here in Santa Cruz. Bullshit, right? Well, to be safe, I went down to the venue the next morning, and WTF?, there is a line of people around the building? I get in line, get some kind of lottery ticket, and score tickets to... the Honking Seals? No..for $20 I get PJ playing in my hometown for 500 people, and debuting Given To Fly, DTE and Wishlist!
Lesson Learned: NEVER underestimate Pearl Jam.
So back to tonight's show. Hmmm...maybe they will sneak in one or two tunes for the faithful, probably mostly tried and true acoustic stuff from year's past. The hours creep by. Jackson Browne and David Lindley sound pretty great. More waiting. Finally IT IS Time!!
Pearl Jam opens with Last Kiss, and while that is pretty rare, it kinda seems like we are in for a night of crowd favorites and sing alongs.
    Again...NEVER underestimate Pearl Jam.
What comes next really sets the tone for the rest of the show: an amazing acoustic version of Unthought Known. Wow!! Beautiful! I begin to realize that acoustic PJ really showcases the creative songwriting of the band. My face is not melting off, but yet I am deeper inside the music. It's the Pearl side. I like it.
Eddie acknowledges, somewhat hesitantly, the 20 year anniversary of the band (given the musical history on stage with Neil,Emmylou,Kris, etc), and talks about PJ having another 20 years. What a class act. Eddie asks "Is anyone here from Santa Cruz?"
So then they break out, what else, a song written about my hometown. It's one of those moments where you feel like the band is personally connected to you, and the whole night and the whole PJ experience falls into place. Santa Cruz is going through some growing pains but I am suddenly reminded of why I live here. It seems like Eddie has spent some time surfing here or hanging out and gets the vibe of the town. I am so stoked after sitting in the rain, and listening to Billy Idol's rebel yell. Then they do the most amazing cover of a Patty Smythe song, and it sounds so Pearl Jam, like they have been playing it for years. Maybe they have. I can't believe how amazing this cover sounds. At one point, it sounded like they were going to tag "Education" onto the end of it. I would not have been surprised. This was a night of surprises. If that's not enough to make the night, how about a completely different arrangement of Better Man, with the most amazing acoustic fingerpicking ever!!! What a transformation! I mean slow Lukin was really cool at MSG, but this really was a mindblowing arrangement. Neil comes out and he and the band play a song I did not recognize, but it was an amazing tune, with Neil singing into his harmonica at the end with some kind of delay. It was insane.
Then a beautiful version of Just Breathe with strings. Everyone sounds great, and the strings sound unreal.
Then to wrap it up, Black with strings?! But wait, again this version has a completely different feel with Matt using brushes, this version stretched out and almost jazz influenced.
I probably missed a song or two...but you get the point.
This was a mindblowing show. Thank you Pearl Jam for 20 plus years. It was amazing to see the acoustic side, and how the band really connects with Neil and the Bridge School. If you are on the fence, go to tomorrow's show! You will not be disappointed!!
Thankful in Santa Cruz!!!!! Come Back Soon!
  • i know the show was all about the kids but any mention of the anniversary?

Yep, Eddie said he was not gonna mention it, but people started yelling "Happy Anniversary". Then he said something like 20yrs is great, but with the other acts that were there, we have a long way to go!!!
