Not sure if they make posts disappear, but the mods definitely edit posts. Or at least I caught them doing it once. Here’s a screenshot from election night. Gimmesometruth was having a rough night as you may imagine, and when I dismissed his claim that “the game is rigged,” he responded either “Fuck you” or “Go fuck yourself” (can’t remember which) before the rest of his post. Notice how it says “edited by Kat” at the bottom. She removed the profanity. 

i know the rules around here. i would never say "fuck you" or "go fuck yourself" to anybody on here. i don't remember what i said, but i promise you 100% it wasn't that.

You did. You were being all emotional. That’s why the post is edited by Kat. Not that I care or am offended. I just remember seeing your initial response, laughing, and then going back to it a day or two later and it had been edited by Kat.

well shit maybe i did. it was a bad night. but i do know the rules and would never purposely post that and just  leave it unless i was trying to get a permaban. sorry about that if that was what i said.

So...I did not know they disappeared.  I've seen them edited with a note before.  And, speaking from experience, if they edit your post, at least with me, I often got a pm warning, unsure if it always occurs.  I would think they are trying to be consistent with that.  But we have several posters still around every day so I am not sure we are all held to the same standard every time.  But, to be fair, it could be difficult to do.

Yeah interestingly enough, I had a new thread closed and a message to not start another thread about a topic under review cause they will just re-open it once cleaned up and do not want multiple threads.  So should be careful.

Just gone?  Or empty post from a poster that says "Edited by Admin" or whatever?

darth we have all seen some of the things you said that got you in trouble. maybe don't do that next time.

my guideline is "if i think this post will get me banned, i walk it back." seems to work so far.

i think if you have multiple infractions it adds up. also if you sprack off to a mod in the pm to you, it likely does not help your chances. that is my guess though. i was in jail a few times over the years and i always got a pm from a mod and that led to discussion where i was wrong and i just apply the lessons i learned when i was in trouble. it's really not that hard to not get a permaban.

The only time I was jailed was when I got fed up with personal putdowns and told the person “Fuck off asshole”. But the putdowns were deemed ok (because they didn’t use vulgarity?).

that is why there are pms. you could have just pmd the poster and said that. or stopped engaging. if someone ever has me heated i disengage and come back another time.

i don't know if that is 100% the case, but i do know most people that get a permaban have had multiple warnings, some had some short term jail stints, some did not change their posting behavior after repeated warnings. there were a few people that showed up for a few days and threw a bunch of bombs in here and didn't last too long. my guess is disrespecting mods in the pms, or not doing what was asked of them. i have been given the option to edit my own post one time but that was back in 2009 or 2010, so it has been a while. i went back and edited it and it was no longer in violation. the best way to stay out of trouble is to try not to break the rules.

Thanks again for the insight. I’ve never been in trouble here so it’s not a personal complaint or experience that I’m dealing with. Just a general observation.

That’s where the mods could communicate more clearly. I got a dm from them and when I replied accepting my punishment I was instantly banned with nothing stating it was temporary, lending the strong impression it was permanent.

It remains astounding to me how many personally demeaning comments are allowed to stand around here, hence my mocking of the “respect” admonishment in the sticky post. The rules are not applied consistently, and the impression of impartiality is blown out of the water when the moderators participate directly in conversations. I always thought they were supposed to remain above the fray, objective. Silly me.

Edit: I won’t be surprised if this post gets me in trouble for being critical of the moderators. I’d love to be wrong about that though.
