Mr. Williams is free to talk as he wishes...however, he won't be free-speechin' as a employee of NPR...

he should have known that whenever he went on tv he is an employee of NPR and should have acted as a better representative of npr. they can fire whoever they want.

Agreed. The right to speak freely doesn't free people from the consequences.

It was taken completely out of context, but that's the state of politics right now, whatever gets the headlines.

“I mean, look, Bill, I’m not a bigot. You know the kind of books I’ve written about the civil rights movement in this country,” he said. “But when I get on a plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they’re identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.”

Doesn't the First Amendment only protect you from the government interfering in what you say? Last time I checked, a corporation (like NPR) was allowed to fire you for publicly saying Muslims scare you.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

Six 'so-called' journalists fired/quit over racial and/or ethinc comments"
Juan Williams (NPR) - Afraid of people dressed in Muslim clothing
Helen Thomas (Hearst) - Thinks the Jews should 'get the Hell out of Palestine'.
Octavia Nasr (CNN) - Respects Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah as a giant of Hezbollah
Laura Schlessinger (Quit her syndicated Radio Show) - Likes the word, 'Nigger'.
Rick Sanchez (CNN) - Thinks the Jews run the media.
Don imus (CBS Radio) - Thinks the WNBA are a bunch of Nappy-headed Hos.
    ...
Nothing to do with Freedom of Speech... because Congress, nor any State legislative branches did not act on ANY of these cases.
Bottom line... it is all about MONEY. Ratings for CNN, CBS Hearst Newspapers... donated subscriptions from private citizens and/or foundations and public funding through grants for NPR. Money... moreso, the LOSS of money was the the driving source behind these BUSINESS DECISIONS.
