They need to find a way to have this a couple weeks earlier.
why?
Just seems totally lost in the shuffle of NFL Playoffs at this point. Divisional round, in my opinion, is always the best weekend of football all year.
National Championship game shouldn't be the night after all that. Should be closer to New Year's. Maybe start the season a couple weeks earlier and have less time between end of season and the playoffs or something?
Should be on a higher pedestal than the night after arguable the NFL's most exciting weekend of the season.
don’t want to start any earlier. I’ve already been to early season games where the temps are in the 90’s….and that’s in Utah!
Yeah plus that's mid August, in many cases before school has even started. That's why I say you could shorten the window from the conference championship games to round 1 by a week or so, but that's about it. It was a pretty long season though.
Penn State's first game was 8/31. Moving that to 8/24 is gonna be that much more hot and that much more of a hassle? I'm not so sure and I think they did it before years ago.
Then you still reduce the time between conference championships and playoffs starting---BOOM.....season ends right before the NFL playoffs start.

I don't know when PSU's fall session starts. I think that may and should be a big factor for every school. But yes, you could take a week on each side I suppose. The question is whether all of that is worth it to do....what exactly? They are still playing the same amount of games and nothing conflicted with the NFL regular or post season. I agree with you that it goes pretty late, but I don't know if my dissatisfaction with that means I would support moving games earlier into August.

I don't know. Maybe I am in the minority but I just don't think it's in college football's best interests to have their national championship coincide with the country's most popular league's divisional playoff round. I just felt it got lost in the shuffle and saw a lot of talk on twitter and such about how there's not as much hype for the game this year.

Interesting. I guess we'll see soon enough when the ratings come out. Considering how outrageously expensive this game was, there was certainly interest. But that's probably because of the blue blood nature of the programs and massive fan bases. The TV ratings will be a different lens on it. One would think with these programs, the ratings should be huge. If they are not, then your hypothesis may be right.

Juggler - you are CONSUMED with your eagles. Obviously the same for fans of the other divisional teams (tho not usually to the same extent ). I loved watching the NFL this weekend but that in no way caused me to lose the Natty “in the shuffle.” maybe I’m a better multitasker?

Again, I said I might be in the minority wob. But this article kind of sums up my frustrations pretty well. And this playoff schedule would avoid the NFL stealing a lot of their thunder:
— Friday, December 12: Game at 8:00 PM (Currently 12/19) — Saturday, December 13: Three games (Currently 12/20)
Quarterfinals
— Friday, December 19: Cotton Bowl in primetime (currently 12/31) — Saturday, December 20: Orange, Fiesta* and Peach* Bowls (currently 1/1)
Semifinals
— Thursday, January 1: Rose* and Sugar* Bowl (currently 1/8 and 1/9)
National Championship
— Friday, January 9 (currently Monday, January 19)
I think this schedule only works if you ALL conference champs get a bye. But that was a problem this year I believe, with teams earning a bye that were not the best four teams. If you don't give them a bye, then the team playing Dec 12th is playing their playoff game 6 days after their conference championship, presumably to a team that had a bye-week because they failed to make the conference title game. That would be a significant disadvantage I think.

It's been Monday nights for years, at least since the 4 team format, maybe even before then.

Yeah, I actually told Mrs FMe this weekend that one of the things I miss about living in SoCal is that football games start early/end early. For hockey, I love when the Kings are on the road in EST. Playoff hockey is an absolute sleep killer.
I did not watch one second of the game. Didn't really care for either team and I was watching something else (WWE RAW )

More than 22 million people tuned in to watch Ohio State beat Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff national championship game on Monday night.
While that is down year over year, it was still the most-watched non-NFL sporting event over the past year.
ESPN released numbers from the Buckeyes’ 34-23 win over Notre Dame on Monday night, which gave them their first national championship since 2014. The game drew 22.1 million viewers on ESPN networks, and it peaked at more than 26 million. More than half of people aged 18-49 who were watching TV on Monday night were tuned into the title game, too.
By comparison, last year’s game between Michigan and Washington drew 25 million viewers and peaked at 28 million — both of which are significantly higher than this year’s figures. Last year’s game was the most-watched championship game since 2020. The championship game in 2021 was the worst-watched at nearly 19 million.
This season marked the first in the 12-team era of the College Football Playoff, which expanded after the four-team version fans have been used to for years now. It’s unclear if the new playoff format had anything to do with the viewership numbers dropping, though the championship game was played later than normal this year as a result. The game also took place hours after President Donald Trump was inaugurated, which could have easily taken attention away from the contest.
Ohio State jumped up to a 21-7 lead at halftime of the championship game, thanks to three second-quarter touchdowns, and then the Buckeyes pushed that lead with 10 quick points to start the third quarter. Though Notre Dame scored a pair of touchdowns to respond and keep it close, the Buckeyes held on down the stretch to secure the 11-point win and their sixth-ever national title.
