What's with the two cords plugged into it?
I am not a musician.
I have curiosity about this because I never seen any other guitar players with two cords.

Some one care to enlighten me.

Also,
In (youtube) videos of the grateful dead

I think one pickup was wired to one amp and the other to another amp. He also could've had an acoustic pickup under the bridge.

I'm not familiar with Garcia's stuff, but I'll look into it. Basically, the guitar was sending either:
2 different signals to 2 sources
    or
1 signal to 2 different sources.

I would guess it was the former, and it just gives the player more control. I.e one amp EQ'd speficially for the neck pickup, or setting, and one amp EQ'd for the other.

After reading this. I am completely wrong. And as a gearhead, completely confused. Loop in a guitar, that's so crazy it just might work.

One of the cords was an output & the other was for an input....

The output went to the amp & the input was from all glory angels up above in high heaven, armed with harps of pure gold.

Either that or what he says:

    by Rick Turner of Alembic

During the 70's,Jerry used an extensively re-worked Strat. He played into a fender Twin Reverb amp with preamp outputs going to a Mcintosh 2300 amp. This powered three Alembic B-12 speaker cabinets which were stacked on their sides, so that he had a vertical column of speakers extending about eight feet into the air. They were stacked like this because it gave a much wider horizontal speread to the sound, with less spill going up into the rafters. Garcia's Effects were MXR Distortion + Script Logo for leads and gain, MXR Analog Delay- the green one with 3 knobs, MXR Phase 100 Script logo -( think candyman lead)
Mutron lll envelope filter- there is no other like it, Mutron Octave Divider

In the 80's he changed the Mutron Octave Divider out for a Boss OC-2 octave divider. He ran his without the stabilizer and without the ring modulator on.

The gain /distortion sound went to a Boss HM-2, thats right Heavy Metal 2. He also added a BOSS OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion PEDAL and a Overdrive pedal, OD-1 both these pedals are yellow. After each of these he placed a Boss GE-7 Graphic Equalizer to shape the sounds of these pedals.

For a delay in the 80's and 90's he used an ADA 2FX which is actually a digital multi effects unit from the early 80's. He had this unit modified so that he could control the length of the delay and the regeneration with foot pedals. Those two knobs were actually missing from his rack unit. He used Ernie Ball foot pedals to sweep these parameters.

For Speakers he used JBL E120s stacked in a verticle cabinet in four then eventually three speaker configurations.

He had one guitar like that that he stopped playing in the 80's after that he played custom guitar made by Doug Irwin and one made by someone else that he started playing right before he died.

Sorry, it looks like that one was an Irwin also!

its pretty amazing, but very very tech oriented..its quick to get lost..but it answers EVERYTHING. It is amazing they kept track of this stuff.

    YAYH!

I can't think of a quite nicer band (besides, ya know) to get into
If it feels good so far, keep going, it just gets better & better!

    FYI,
There's a band called "Dark Star Orchestra" or DSO, who tour the country and sound eerily just like the Grateful Dead, so much so that when Bob Weir & Phil Lesh recently toured ("Furthur"), they actually stole the Jerry from this band (who was then left to find another "Jerry").

Their "sound" also resembles the Dead. It's not just WHAT they play, but how it SOUNDS to the audience, is important.

    http://www.darkstarorchestra.net/NEWSITE/HTML/dso.php?sec=home

    there's their page.

they play smaller to medium venues and are definitly worth checking out

    LADY WITH A FAN

    Let my inspiration flow
    in token lines suggesting rhythm
    that will not forsake me
till my tale is told and done

    While the firelight's aglow
strange shadows in the flames will grow
    till things we've never seen
    will seem familiar

    Shadows of a sailor forming
winds both foul and fair all swarm
down in Carlisle he loved a lady
    many years ago

Here beside him stands a man
a soldier by the looks of him
    who came through many fights
    but lost at love

    While the storyteller speaks
a door within the fire creaks
    suddenly flies open
and a girl is standing there

    Eyes alight with glowing hair
all that fancy paints as fair
she takes her fan and throws it
    in the lion's den

"Which of you to gain me, tell
will risk uncertain pains of Hell?
    I will not forgive you
if you will not take the chance"

The sailor gave at least a try
the soldier being much too wise
    strategy was his strength
    and not disaster

    The sailor coming out again
the lady fairly lept at him
    that's how it stands today
you decide if he was wise

    The storyteller makes no choice
soon you will not hear his voice
his job is to shed light
    and not to master

Since the end is never told
we pay the teller off in gold
in hopes he will come back
but he cannot be bought or sold

    TERRAPIN STATION

    Inspiration, move me brightly
light the song with sense and color,
    hold away despair
More than this I will not ask
faced with mysteries dark and vast
statements just seem vain at last
some rise, some fall, some climb
    to get to Terrapin

    Counting stars by candlelight
all are dim but one is bright:
    the spiral light of Venus
    rising first and shining best,
    From the northwest corner
    of a brand-new crescent moon
    crickets and cicadas sing
    a rare and different tune

    Terrapin Station
in the shadow of the moon
    Terrapin Station
and I know we'll be there soon

    Terrapin - I can't figure out
Terrapin - if it's an end or the beginning
Terrapin - but the train's got its brakes on
and the whistle is screaming: TERRAPIN

    AT A SIDING

    While you were gone
    these spaces filled with darkness
    The obvious was hidden
    With nothing to believe in
the compass always points to Terrapin

The sullen wings of fortune beat like rain
You're back in Terrapin for good or ill again

Old thread-but, the extra cord may also have something to do with the MIDI system garcia used in later years.
I am a child of the brent/tiger years and was lucky enough to see my first show in 82.

Damn shame they cant get the core four to reach a consensus.

I'm gonna to sing you a hundred verses in ragtime,
I know this song it ain't never gonna end.
I'm gonna march you up and down along the county line,
Take you to the leader of a band.
