Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis0 -

Just an opinion...everyone has one

No matter what the political leaning or belief, anytime anyone says "some people don't want to know the truth", it's merely a cop-out to one side being enlightened and the other ignorant sheep. Complete bs at it's finest. Please... don't take this personally... and I apologise in advance if I insult you... which I really am not out to do...
But... is it just me... or are the dumbest people around us the ones who tend to say, "Some people don't want to know the truth"... like they are the only ones who know the truth?
I mean, I look long and hard for The Truth... and have been looking for it for at least a decade and a half... and I rarely find it. I find a lot of beliefs and opinions... some half truths and a ton of lies... but, not a whole lot of truths. And trust me... the LAST place you will find the Truth is Television.
Anyway... i just had to say that. Carry on with your... whatever it is you do...Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

My Geography teacher began talking about the Heartland, she said:
"The Heartland is supposedly a place where good old American values still exist today. Does anyone know where this is supposed to be?"

There is no Truth, only truths that we come to support our interpretations and perspectives. It would take an egomaniac to declare "This is the Truth!!"
I haven't read it in a while, but Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra has some interesting points on "Truth" (capital T).
That being said, I applaud you as a searcher, Cosmo. It is good to always search for, while at the same time confronting and questioning the "Truths" that abound around us. These Truths lay the foundation for many good aspects of our society, but they also can do the same for many ill aspects.0 -

Well put. Why on earth do people in this country follow grotesque (apologies for clearly showing my bias) individuals like Beck, Limbaugh, and Palin? It is amazing. But, I guess it is easier than thinking for one's self. Also, a new season of America's got Talent begins soon.0 -

I don't know what family values mean either. It seems like a lot of families that support "family values" are no better than anyone else.
It's kind of like the terms "open minded" and "progressive" from the other side. They don't mean anything either. The only people we should try to get even with...

It means that the husband and wife are 2 entities united by marriage. The marriage is now the entity which must be nurtured. This is agape love. Sacrifice for the marriage or don't bother taking hat route. Children are not the center of the family. The marriage is. The children learn to love by witnessing the father love the mother and have high standards for themselves when getting into a relationship. The children have approval that they don't need to seek for the rest of their entire lives. They know them are loved because they are disciplined and rewarded when appropriate. The whole family has roles and responsibilities that are understood, respected and followed. This is what I think of Family values and I firmly believe that this would solve most issues today.TDR0

Sounds nice, but the history of divorce rates says the opposite.. that people and families don't value marriage.hollow bottle wrote:It means that the husband and wife are 2 entities united by marriage. Your comment is over simplified IMO
First Children ARE the center of family.... if the family chooses to have children, if children are not in the picture it is usually the elderly parents that become the center of the family. My wife and I did not get married until our first child was almost 2. She was the center of the family before and after we got marriage. I often argue the objective of marriage is to survive raising children.
Children do not learn to love by watching the father love the mother primarily, however modeling is part of learning. My parents hated each other and I still learned to love. Children learn to love by being loved, experiencing the feelings of love and being loved by their caregivers (which does not have to be a paternal parent). In the case of the parents it starts the minute a child is born and bonding with the mother. Discipline and rewards might teach love, that is debatable, IMO they teach boundaries (ie right and wrong) and love comes into play when you experience feelings of love regardless of what you do.... unconditional love.
Where this falls into family values I am not sure and it is too hard to say because what a families values differs too much between individuals and cultures. The right/wrong, the family roles/responsibilities, expectations, communication and even expressions of love differ widely among cultural norms.
That said maybe we can say that adhering to one's own cultural norms is what family values are.... but that is also over simplified.**CUBS GO ALL THE WAY IN......never **0 -

But one can hardly argue that the scenario described is a bad one.
People are just too selfish to make it happen. The only people we should try to get even with...

Well it's not about good or bad necessarily, this discussion turns more into a debate about what some find acceptable or reasonable... but when it comes to living our lives, who are we to tell others how to act in ways which don't harm others? Different strokes for different folks you know.know1 wrote:But one can hardly argue that the scenario described is a bad one.
