Just got done seeing the Dublin and Belfast shows. Both were great.

The new song Of The Earth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFnbU1Ewwk8) was the highlight of the Dublin show, along with the Arms Aloft cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1f1E1nnKpI) from Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros. EV mentioned that Strummer's band was going to open for PJ on a recent European tour but then Strummer died.

The crowd was really good in Dublin. The front was a little rough but not too bad. The band seemed to be more thankful than usual for the warm reception.

The extended jam sessions and tempo changes in Of The Earth show that PJ could tweak their style a bit and be successful with it.

I thought EV's vocals in Kick Out The Jams were fantastic.

Thanks to Aussie friends Xavier and Jaye, whom I met at the Christchurch, New Zealand show and are doing many of the European shows this tour. They offered to drive me to Belfast right after the Dublin show without even being sure if I was an axe murderer. Sleeping on the grass in Belfast at 2:45 AM until sunrise was another heartwarming memory.

While the entry into the arena wasn't organized very well, props should go out to the security guards in front of the stage in Dublin. They did a good job with managing the crowd and getting people out.

I was really underwhelmed by the Dublin show. The Relentless Seven were an amazing start, but Pearl Jam didn't really bring it at this gig. The fact it was a hits gig aside, they were very sloppy. A lot of flubbed notes and you could tell there was some real jetlag going on there. I did enjoy how they jammed the shit out of the new song but I'm surprised that nothing else could touch that performance on the night.

As for the guy who fell, what a moron. I'm just glad he didn't land on someone below. From what I understand he was very drunk and walking along the rail of the balcony. I don't know if he then fell or did in fact jump, but either way, he's an idiot for doing that in the first place. Wreckless and inconsiderate. I have it on good word that he will live but is currently paralyzed. Don't know if that's for good or what, but I'm just really glad no one else was hurt. Physically at least.... i really feel for the witnesses.

Anyway, have some photos from the front row ;] http://www.flickr.com/photos/jmgphotos/sets/72157624347452040/

Got home yesterday from Dublin to Boston and I finally have a chance to post my experience...

Being that this was my first time in Ireland and first time seeing Pearl Jam outside of the states, it was going to be special. Dublin was a nice city with a lot of history and with an economy that seems to be getting stronger. And for a few days there, everywhere I went I saw people with Pearl Jam shirts on. I went to the pre-party the night before the show (which was the day I arrived - I was surprised I was able to stay up late!) and that was fun. Met a couple of nice people there, had a few drinks, and watched a few guys play some PJ tunes (I requested Sad and they gave it a good try, for a second). It was a great atmosphere being around so many PJ fans from many different places.

The show - We got our Ten Club tickets and wristbands and waited on line to get in - and I managed to get a spot three rows from the stage on Mike's side. Then the waiting - Ben Harper was good, but I was really excited to see PJ up close. Finally they came on and started with Long Road.

Now after being spoiled by getting to see some great shows in the Boston area, I thought the setlist as a whole was below average. What made it special, obviously, was Of The Earth and Arms Aloft in Aberdeen, and I had never seen them play Kick Out the Jams before. Everything else was pretty standard - it did seem like they realized that they haven't played Dublin in awhile so they played most of the hits. And that is what the crowd as a whole probably wanted - they got excited for Even Flow, and I heard some complain about them not playing Jeremy. They were great on stage though - Mike kept coming over to where I was standing and one time as I was taking a picture, it looked like he pointed at me and posed - I was kind of surprised and took a picture of just his guitar and not of his face! But I did get some great pics of Mike (and got a guitar pick) and even Eddie came over and I got a couple of great closeups (I will have to post the pics later, if anyone if interested).

This show was special since I probably won't get to be this close to the stage again and because it was in Ireland. The crowd was interesting - different but kind of the same from a U.S. crowd. You had some cool people in the area who just wanted to enjoy the show, and you had the guys who just wanted to push everyone out of the way to get up close and be obnoxious (and they always seem to gravitate towards where I am standing!) I would have loved to go to the Belfast show since the setlist was better in my opinion, but this was a short trip. I am interested to see how the rest of the tour is going to shape up and what other surprises are in store for the crowds!

Thank you, Pearl Jam, for another interesting experience and I will see you guys in Boston next time!

    Dublin
Hard. Strange venue. The big empty space behind us. Two stores, looked like playing in a department store… The Popcorn and bloody expensive Carlsberg (6 euros?!).

Very strong setlist tho. Energy. The Long Road, Once, The Fixer, Why Go, Corduroy, Severed Hand - ??!! . Lukin into Not for You transition?! Crystal chorus in Nothing Man. Got Some – Comatose combo ?!

The New song ! Man… where did that come from? Surely not from the Backspacer era…. Complicated song, changin tempo …. Its just Pearl Jam who can stick a brand new song, especially sounding like this into their setlist of a european leg tour opener…

Best Porch ever. Small town and Better Man brought tears. Bit overwhelmed by all those whole day beers. Yellow Ledbetter… Energy was so high.

    Belfast
One big 10c party really. All started on the train… hotel…. Third row waiting. The people we met, the people we talked to. The people we took care of and them took care of us. The couple in their mid 60’s couple… The band looked like really enjoying it. Very relaxed. Love in the air. Happy Birthday Brendan O’Brien ?

Setlist wise? Insignificance – Present Tense – Daughter. Save You - Given to Fly - Black – Rearviewmirror ?!! SOLAT! Jeremy (felt in love with Jeff’s bass! So sexy!) Leash! Crazy Mary ! and ofcourse the crazy atmosphere during YL … Eddie in eye contact with that guy in the 10c seating sector … so funny.

Oh god. Love this band. Love the whole PJ family. Everyone that we met. Wish I knew them all by names…

Cant wait for Berlin. And kinda glad im not doing any festivals as PJ are really the best when playing just for their fans... But wishing all of you guys outhere in Hyde Park tonite best of luck and another breathtaking Pearl Jam experience.

I was blown away by pearl jam! The atmosphere was amazing and the setlist was brilliant. I think that people need to stop complaining about what they didn't play (there's only so much they can include) and take the experience for what it was and thank their lucky stars they got a ticket for the show :p They're still going strong and I can't wait for Berlin next week :D

There were 2 songs left off the setlist. They were:

    The End
    Spin The Black Circle.

Carlsberg cost 6euro per pint. Yep its shit, but most pints in Dublin cost 5euro or more....we have to live with it so there;s not much more i can say. Food is generally overpriced here too in case nobody noticed....

by the way guys I was talking to a friend last night and he told me that the guy who jumped off the balcony is a friend of a friend of his, and he only broke his arm. Of course he was drunk and it was the most stupid thing on earth to be jumping off a balcony, but at least we know now it's not true what they said, that he was paralised or something.

Fueled by tea and a couple of Kit Kats, I think it's time to write my fanview. Although the noise from those frickin' vuvuzelas does distract me somewhat. (That's the third time I've complained about them today, so I'll stop now.) Or maybe it's the good looking guy next to me that keeps distracting me. ;)

So, Pearl Jam in Dublin. In short, the whole experience was pretty darn-diddly-super-dupertastic. The pre-party, the people-seeing on the day of the show, the show itself.. All good. (Wasn't delighted to hear about the idiot guy who jumped down, but glad he's fine.)

During the show, we were on Mike's side of the stage. View was good enough, there was room to dance and people were polite (more or less), sound was grand as well. Some jerks around, but hey, that's rock'n'roll. Or so I hear. Mr McCready seemed to be having loads of fun. The funny dancing, the rolling about on the stage, not to mention the excellent guitarring - fantastic. It was nice to see Ed make a few visitations to our side of the stage too.

(It's taken me so long to write this thing that the footie match is already over.)

I have to say, I liked the setlist a lot. Nothingman, Better Man, Given to Fly, Small Town and UNTHOUGHT KNOWN! :D Possibly my favourite song from Backspacer, I had hoped the band would play it, of course they did and it sounded wonderful.

I'm not a big fan of Avocado, but the songs sound very good live. Same goes for songs from Backspacer. With Amongst the Waves though, I still like the lyrics more than the music, which doesn't make it an amazing live song for me.

Nice choices for cover songs this time, even though I wasn't previously familiar with Arms Aloft. (As far as I can remember at least.) I did like hearing my boyfriend and friend singing along and enjoying themselves. Never would have expected that and Kick Out The Jams to be busted out.

All in all, I loved the show. It was nice seeing Pearl Jam in Dublin again. And a new song! I'll have to hear Of The Earth again to be able to form a proper opinion about it, but so far so good.

Enjoyed the Dublin show but I much preferred last years concert at 02 London - I don't think anything else will be able to top that one for me
  • It's been a crazy week so I have only just been able to post.

Dublin, what can I say, great city, great people. I was really made to feel welcome and thanks to the Holiday Inn for letting me check in at 9.30am!

As for the gig I had seated seats in block D. When long Road started everyone remained seated except for me and one or two others, by Why Go eveyone was up on their feet. I have never felt so much energy before it was amazing.

By the end everyone was chatting to each other and the general opinion was that it was a great show. The set list was ok, a little stop start but solid and the new song reminded me a touch of RVM, I loved it. It seemed to me that the band were generally supprised by the reception they got, the crowd were wild.

Of the mere six shows I have been to it was up there and I was considering ranking it number one, till I got to Belfast....

thats good because i saw him hit the ground and it wasnt a pretty sight - i thought he was dead and drove the whole way home thinking someone had died, only to find out the next night that he was paralysed

so yeah - good to hear that only broke his arm

and hey - he sorta got a mention in belfast by eddie !! :D

i just got home from my european jaunt where i only caught one (yes, ONE) pj show. i thought dublin was one of the most rockin' of my nine pearl jam shows, with only a handful of 'slow ones'. this was an energetic, balls-to-the wall show, unique from the others i've seen in the past. my personal highlights from this one were comatose (which i've been craving to catch live since first hearing crapshoot rapture), of the earth (because really, what's better than unexpected brand-new pj music?), and kick out the jams (since it's just an amazing heavy song).

in other words, i loved it!

oh and that pre-party was pretty fun too (maybe a little TOO fun).
  • Dublin was my first ever Pearl Jam concert, despite being a life long fan, and wow!!! A night I will never forget, the last time they played Dublin I was out of the country and was raging when I found out they were going to be playing and I was not going to be there. Funnily enough I was suppose to be out of the country on holidays for this one too, but changed plans to be back for it (much to the dismay of my Gf for a while :)

Now I just want to go to another one!!!! Would love to see them in the states, Seattle or Boston!

Thanks for a great night PJ!!

Wow, what an opener this show was! Dublin is a really great place for fun but Pearl Jam and this city are really fans of each other. It was loud, crazy, uplifting and exciting for the entire show. Ben Harper was really the opposite: slow, mellow and mostly dull, I am sorry...and in spite of the fact PJ is the best band in his opinion he still has no idea why: sitting on a chair and afraid to say an emphatic thank you, playing the very same setlist evening by evening is just so not PJish. Stereophonics should have been played but it might be only a dream to me.
The sound in the first half and the first few songs sounded rusty unfortunately but the vibe and the enthusiasm just let the show flow into a very high level near perfection.
We waved our Hungarian flags as many times as possible, Ed, Jeff, Boom and Stone nodded to and smiled at us a couple times, Monica next to me even got a bottle of mineral water from Ed right after he sipped of it.
I personally finally got Long Road after 10 shows (I knew/felt that), Porch was phenomenal as always,
    Kick Out The Jams,
    Unthought Known,
    Down,
    Nothingman,
    Not For You,
    Better Man
    and
Alive were the most outstanding performances in my opinion.
Stone seemed the most active and funniest rocker on stage to me, it's amazing how he always surprises us. But the rest of the band was on fire although the real flames got activated in Belfast the other night, that was even better than the Dublin show!!!
By the way Dublin was the first and only PJ show for me with earplugs on, the speaker on the right was so close to us the loudness was just painful but still, they rocked the shit out of the Point Depot. Security and organization was really great but the fact we weren't allowed to sit down at the front row is one of the dumbest thing of the year  , however they did not even checked my bag and pockets at the 10c entrance. ;)

  • My wife's 1st show. We came all the way from South Africa, were in line by 04:20 and despite being 20 and 21 in the hand numbers and spending all day in line unfortunately got pushed out by later arrivals due to bad handling by O2 staff and only made it to the verge of Mike's end of the stage but at least in the front.

At first we were disappointed but it worked out well because Mike did a few solos right in front of us, we each got a pick from him, Ed saw our "Please come to South Africa" sign and gave me a pick in my hand!

Thank you Ed, Mike, Jeff, Stone and Matt

    Please come to South Africa

Unfortunately (for you) you stood behind and to the left of my wife and I. I was the tall guy with the long hair and black Pearl Jam t-shirt. Sorry about that but you got some great pictures and we only had a cell phone there.
    Thank you!

Ah what a night (well, week). I didn't know whether I was going to queue or not until I woke up at about 11am with the hangover from hell so that kinda ruled out queueing :D

Anyway, it was the other half's first show and now he's got backspacer in the car and is singing along and knows more words than I do :D . He finally gets it  . Even from being at the sound part (yep, we saw the aftermath of the stupid bollox who jumped, again spent ages worried if someone died or not) he could tell that Mike was a lot of fun on stage (yep, he's also much taller than me). I think it's a fair assumption that we'll be in the queue next time. Kim & Chris were good concert buddies.

Nothingman was the highlight for me since I hadn't heard it before.

    Brilliant brilliant night
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
